I don't want to be a terrorist ED

So, the mission board is broken because they broke it to fix it after it was broken? Typical FDev.
Yeah, though I don't blame them entirely. Giving you the short version:
  • Actual problem: War state not being detected for some factions during war, therefore war themed missions weren't appearing (including "Massacre opposition ships")
  • Players: FD I CAN'T FIND MASSACRE MISSIONS FOR WAR INCREASE THEIR SPAWN RATE!
FD decided to up the spawn amount because that's what players were asking for... and all this did was create more Massacre Pirate missions, and didn't actually address the core issue. I spent a fair whack of time on those bugreports trying to clear up the FUD, but so many people were like "Jmanis, clearly you don't understand the BGS works in mysterious ways. This isn't a bug! You're just unlucky!"

Spent two years trying to clear the FUD around that bug and get it fixed properly, so cbf trying to prove that the spawn rates for those missions are still set too high from that bad fix. tl;dr we simply got what we asked for.

Why so much massacre missions and so on? Seems like it's the focus of most missions which mainly don't interest me.

I do feel these missions are labeled weird. When military troops or mercs are send out on a mission they are not typically told to go massacre.
There are certain objectives that might require taking out a lot of opponents. There might be considerable collateral damage, but directly calling it going on a massacre is weird.
There is an excessive amount of overt and public massacring going on in missions in the ED universe and it feels weird to me.
I think FDev could do more to add a bit of depth and context to these missions. As they are now you are just ordered to go killing for the killing.

Isn't it the job of the developer to identify what the customers really want and not just do what they ask for? At least that's what good developers do. In the end FDev did what they did and they are the only ones responsible for their actions - it's not like they are forced to do what the players want by some contract written in blood or magic bond or something…

Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

Anyway, cheers for your nature, OP. I've only wanted to RP as a psycho on rare circumstances, and they were kind of dark times in my life.

Do remember that this is, perhaps somewhat unfortunately, a rather contrived video game where the meta game progression doesn't always make much sense contextually in the game for us immersive types.

Good luck.

What I find a missed opportunity is FD not using morally ambiguous language to highlight the hypocrisy within the game, since its set in a dystopian time.
Yeah, there's a disconnect from "the human condition" in the game. I guess we're meant to fill the the blanks and to some extent set the stage for ourselves.

I was toying with the idea of fleshing something out for a suggestion thread, but I don't know yet. But what I had in mind was the factions respond to your history. If you are violent some factions / gov types will view you with disgust (and not have violent missions visible), but contact you in secret to appear to peaceful players they are 'above' such acts. It might be that the more secret violent acts will eventually lead to you being betrayed.

Yeah, these sorts of bits added in sound great to me, but then I'm not really sure what Frontier are going for here. It seems like they're taking it in a very much hands-off approach. On the other hand, with how contrived and forced the meta progression is, I wonder if they just don't care about that sort of game narrative thing so much anyway.

Is it still meant to be "shocking" or the new normal though?
Well, it's a video game.

By the by, looking for an old copy of the DOS Blade Runner game as well. Need to focus on getting my 486 up and running though.
I had that old game once upon a time...

I actually love this idea. Nice fluffy democracies refuse to put massacres and assassinations on their actual mission boards, but once you're allied with them and have a high enough combat rating, you'll occasionally get a comms message offering to pay you to take care of some "business".
