Is the 'January Update' the December Update minus FC's?

Some nice QoL improvements in the beta we are getting today, I'm looking forward to having a few days trying to break it! Having 'rescuable' NPC Crew is an excellent idea!

But....

The cynic in my asks if this would have been what we would have been given, in just a few short days, and included Fleet Carriers too...

Am I the only one with this question floating around the back of their mind?

Yea with Frontiers track record I didnt for a minute swallow the waffle about the carriers being delayed again to focus on bug fixing.

More likely than not the carrier were not ready to implement.
I guess it's a combination of both. Fleet carriers probably weren't ready but delaying them gave more time for bug fixing. It's possible they could've pushed them into the December update but in a very poor and buggy state.

Yeah, definitely going to say those changes to BGS states have been in development since before the focus on bug fixing started.

Very nice they are too based on the initial description.

I think, the community asking for bug fixing was a good opportunity for them to delay the FC until later and fix some bugs. Plenty of Thargoids in the game as it is.

Of course, the entire 'we listened to you' act was silly, as was the 'open letter' stuff. A five-day beta to test new BGS states? Really? It doesn't matter that much to me, I expect next to nothing until Next Era launches in a year, but it is a bit of a shame to end the weakest year in the game's history with the feeblest patch in its history. Then again, the game is inching towards a relatively beginner-friendly, polished state which it needs to be in next year.

yep they really listened... they have gone one step further with the dolphin heat bug fix... yes we will fix it but nerf the ship while we're at it.

moral of the story;

Don't report bugs

I don't see the point of reporting bugs anymore, now that they then have to be voted on by the community and this community can't even agree on whether drones falling out of the sky and causing ship destruction because bad luck is a bug or not.

Based on a real discussion that is.

Yes it is....but I've not seen anything to say it's coming in the Beta, or have I misunderstood your post ?
It is here:
Greetings Commanders,
...
  • Added ability to rescue any crew that where on board the player's ship when it was destroyed, from the insurance screen.
...
Please note that these Patch Notes are for the January Update (Beta), and not reflective of the final January Update Patch Notes.
I gathered from this that we'd be able to 'arrange' to die (I'll take out a keelback :) ) with our NPC pilot and the rebuy screen would give the option of bringing them back with us :)

I think they've just moved things around, there's probably more in the update than originally intended.

Frankly a big thing like FCs coming out independent of other features will be a much better idea, fewer balls in the air at once, so to speak.

I was a bit miffed when the FC's were dropped, but just built 'plans' around the changed release date, so seeing the 'new' stuff we are about to test made me ask the question.
Beta should be ready to download when I get back from walking the dogs :)

I'm torn on the crew recovery option. On the one hand - Yes, thank you. The time to train them up and make them useful makes it hard to be willing to risk them later on in anything where the outcome is not pretty well certain. On the other hand - I kind of liked the fact that there was that element of risk there. Taking my good pilot out with the beater Type-9 was a big help but also a bit of a risk if we got into a fight I couldn't get out of.

I'd hope that the recovery fee is substantial. I'd be fine if it doubled the re-buy cost or took 5% of their lifetime earnings.

Ohhh, I didn't even notice this! Almost makes up for the delay of FC's as I'm currently training up an NPC to Elite (fairly long way to go still) and barely ever take him out now that I've sold all my hull/shield tank ships safe enough to operate in Open. Good stuff.

I'd be happy with whatever the cost - the actual fact training up and getting attached to an NPC over a pretty long period of time might not go poof in an instant would be worth it for me. I lost a Dangerous pilot (trained from Harmless) before due to a silly mistake, and it took me months to gather the will to train another one up from scratch.

Not wanting to tell you how to manage your expectations here, but if you're already whining about features in the beta or the lack thereof, you're just not ready for testing.

Beta is optionnal. Stick to vanilla.

We would have probably received a bloody bugged update with bugged FC and only few of the bug fixes that are included now...still bugged of course
