Turret cam and Gunner seat single player.

Turret cam, should be a thing when in gunner seat. Keep the awesome 3rd person ‘all guns blazing’ cam, but also have the option to switch to a 1st person camera on each turret, so you can see your weapons shooting their load all over the space.
And you should be able to enter gunner seat on your own ship if you have a crew member.

Scratch that. I don’t trust a NPC anyone to fly my ship.

First person turrets may be... Odd to control if your ship is rolling, pitching and yawing all over the place.

I do this in the SRV all the time and it's usable despite the bizzare decision to decouple the turret and SRV turning...should be easier from the ship (and is not hard in other games with first person turrets).

Well, even a harmless crew can fly my Cutter.
And they can even hit with a Huge PA.

Quite nice to stay at a distance in a SLF and watch the show :)

Those being said, yes, i'd love to have my crew fly my ship while i man the turrets.
And no, this does not apply to human multicrew - i will not trust someone else with a multicrew spot in my ship.

An SRV has a ground plane.

In space, you'd be rotating in many directions quite often making it very odd to try and aim at something.

The target could one moment be dead ahead, and the next, on the complete opposite side of the ship.

True that, but I'm sure this could be alleviated. For example, auto-rotate your POV to hold it more stable when the ship turns/rolls, have an indicator on the edge of your view port showing where your target is if it's off screen, perhaps have a slight "homing effect" for your aim when you're pointing close enough to the target, etc. Yes, not easy to implement, would probably take a lot of testing to get the controls "right".

Or, simplify it a lot: have the turret auto-aim at your chosen target, but drift off when the ship makes sudden movements - basically only leave corrective movements and timing of fire to the player?

Well, can't say how well these would work without experimentation - who knows, maybe FDev did experiment with this but ditched the idea when it didn't work out?

But I certainly like the idea, especially for multicrew (if it only worked better!). I've even entertained the idea of dirt cheap "pleb level account" that would only allow you to play CQC (because I've heard it's pretty dead there) and crew other players' ships. This would be a good way to introduce people to the game or have your kids play with you even if they're too young or uninterested to have the full Elite experience. Heck, FDev could even have promotional "free weekends" allowing people to try the pleb account for free to lure in more potential players.

Pretty sure that's what happened yeah. I bet they tried crazy hard to make a first person turret system and found it just isn't really viable with ships that are so agile and combat has a lot of evasion involved.

If the Gunner role had a restricted view (if you use X-Wing Alliance as an example), I would probably be fine with it but the 360 degree view you have available in the present game; it gives you too much of an advantage. It will bypass the best thing about this game, I.e. The flight model and ship to ship combat and everyone will have to adopt the 'Turret' view as it will be the only way to compete.

Heck, it turns the game into Freelancer and please God, we don't want that!
