Just feels unfinished and rushed

Can't go along with you OP, I too enjoyed the Elite series in the 80's & 90's & I'm closing in on 10k hours on my gameclock in ED.

I wouldn't have said the game was rushed....the term would be 'a still developing game'.
Ok, it may not be developing as quickly as some might want, but it's still my goto game, even though at this time I'm working on Space Engineers, until the next update comes along (& I mean Carriers not the 'bugs free' update that's now been forced on us).

Even though I'm currently not playing it as much as I have, I'll always return back to it, I don't always like what Frontier do with it, but.......Excellent value for money in my book(y)

In terms of quality of other online games I don't think Elite Dangerous is any better or worse. Its a games industry standard thing now for games to be early access, unfinished or constantly needing work. Faster internet speeds mean games aren't generic anymore and not easy to build. EA and Valve are the guys to blame really the whole charging you to test model was introduced by them 10-15 years ago.

I played the original Elite. In its day it was awesome. There was simply nothing like it and the game world felt huge. However 35 years of computer game development have taken place and of course the game now appears very dated. ED is a reasonable approximation to how I imagined the game in 1984. The combination of space flight and FPS that SC allows I can see being a compelling attraction.

4 pages in and I'm still perplexed that the OP claimed to have the 'space bug' and clearly has no idea about gravity - you have angled re-entry for a reason, one which he should probably know..
4 pages in and I'm still perplexed that the thread is still going! Such an obvious OP troll post, I'm surprised the mods haven't slapped a closed notice on it.

I had my first days and nights with Elite in 84.. and as a 15 year old teen, ran into huge fights with my dad. But Elite gave me the space bug.. hand me a ship and I would most likely never come back.

I got Elite Dangerous, when it got launched.. the first look and feel was just great.. and short after my Python I got bored.. lack of content.. not that the 84 version had more (I think I looked for that constrictor for a good 6 months jumping from system to system over all galaxies). So I decided to give it a break and come back later to have a look. Took a bit till I got Horizons.. Yuck, what a mistake..
I personal don't need to drive around on planets, if I want to drive, I start iRacing. They added more resource grinding by adding planets.. great!

When I found out, that there were no Targoids in Elite Dangerous, I had my first big WHAT! moment.. Next of those I had in Horizons blown into my face in one day. First I had when I suddenly had cockpit modes.. the next moment wasn't far away.. why on earth do I need a angle to enter the atmosphere?? I can park beside a sun to fuel up, but I can't take the entry heat? So my spaceship turned into a space shuttle suddenly. And right after... it turned into a very slow commercial airliner... 770km to target, 42 minutes, Concord would have left me in the dust.. yeah, that is about what you can do in a 380 on Microsoft Flight Simulator. Hello?!?

When I was hoping for more content, wasn't for more grinding or nonsense.. Galaxy Drive is at least still outstanding... People can build their on stations like in the X series, with protection and patrols.. there would have been so many more things to do, before those stupid planet landings.. is like in Star Citizen.. they offer a space flyer and need to add a first person shooter (at least I got the over 1k$ back when I wrote in 2016, nothing will happen till 2022, is just to long, want my money back.. and had it a few days later in my Paypal).

I am 1 rank before Elite in Trader, I think 2 away for Explorer and somewhere mid range in Combat.. was just a mess with Bounty Hunting at the time when I stopped Dangerous, scratch one friendly and have to leave the area. So I played my fair share and gave it a fair chance.. but Horizon feels very much rushed and best word is "messy".. perhaps thanks to the console platforms. The first day a commercial airliner brings cockpit modes.. I play Elite Horizons again... so lets face it.. my time is over in this game, took Horizons 2 days. Bummer.. good memories.. Still have the original booklet of the 84 game, is the only manual of a old game I ever kept.

Lets see.. I might keep Dangerous on my drive, but Horizons is not for me.. that I know for sure, ruins my game experience and feel.

Wish you all happy grinding...
OP you're right that the game remains unfinished. It is now in its fifth year but still is quite empty unless one likes to read screens and sentences. That's about the extent of the interaction. It's probably best to simply look at other options like SC which is miles ahead even in alpha. Miles ahead. Miles deeper.

Reading screens and sentences in a video game ?, outrageous.

SC is a comically transparent scam.
