The Softest "Reset"

In the last couple of weeks I have seen a few threads about people resetting their accounts and burning down their credit balance to get a "fresh" start on the game.

I am unwilling to permanently lose the credits I have accumulated, and there is no chance in hell that I will go through unlocking relevant engineers again. Instead I chose to "store" my credits.

I had 2.3 billion credits, so I went over to Jameson and bought 2 cutters, put reactive armor, 8a fuel scoops, 8a AMFUs, and A rated the rest of the core modules. Cutters are named Bank I and Bank II. I left myself with only 15 million credits, enough for some rebuys on my smaller ships.

I still have access to my entire fleet, but I cannot afford to fly the big ones yet, as my Corvette rebuy is about 25 mil (and I never fly without a rebuy!). I think it will be interesting to "unlock" the ability to use my bigger/more expensive ships.

I must say it was somehow liberating to squirrel that all away. I think I will keep it stored until the carriers become available. I can also see my balance increasing more clearly now that there are way less numbers. I figured that i would throw this idea out there for anyone that wants a fresh start, but without the annoyances of restarting the game from scratch

It is also worth noting, selling ships will give you 90% of the value, but selling modules in outfitting will give you full price back. When you want the money, make sure to sell/downgrade the modules before selling the ship itself. In my case selling the whole ship would lose hundreds of millions, but selling modules first will only end up costing me 30 mil between both ships

I've done this a few weeks ago (instead of resetting my account completely) and am glad I went down this road instead. Did it by shipping my entire fleet to the Witchhead Nebula, and spent any remaining cash on ship hulls until I ran out of credits, then suicidewinded back to the bubble. 2k credits, no modules, 1 Sidey. Go!

The novelty lasted about 2-3 weeks, until I started to miss flying other ships (I stuck pretty much to the Cobra Mk3 after earning the credits to A-rate it in a Sidey only).

What I really had an issue with was the size of my fleet it turns out. Shortly after I shipped my fleet back to the bubble, I had the same feeling of "what now?" - feeling bored at the thought of flying ship A to perform activity B.

Solution - I stripped all essential engineered modules from all my ships (PP gear, and G5'd shields, FSD, thrusters, power plants and a few other choice modules - unfortunately the limited storage didn't let me keep it all) and sold all hulls. Yes, including my beloved G5'd Vette that I kept that way for over a year.

Then I decided to pick a fleet consisting of few ships only (initial limit 6, but that went up to 8 now, which feels quite comfortable now), that I would engineer the bejaysus out of - including gear I didn't bother with before, such as limpets etc. Turns out that can make a huge difference especially with go-faster ships like the Courier.

Now, I'm flying some ships I didn't spend too much time on (Courier has been a revelation to me, to the extent that I bought various cosmetics for it), and changed roles around a bit (Krait Mk2 is now my Python, with the limit of only 124t instead of 192t but rocking 5 PAs; never flown before Mamba is my medium combat ship of choice now, etc.). It feels SO much fresher compared to before, where I had a big fleet with a ship for each activity, but that is exactly what bored me in the end.

The grind to G5 my 'new' fleet wasn't that bad either because I could pick and choose from a selection of stored engineered modules already, at least the ones that mattered most in terms of improving general usability (aforementioned thrusters, shields, FSD). That avoided having to grind for mats since those modules require the most elusive ones.

Whenever I decide to buy a new ship now, I'll replace one of the existing ones in my fleet, and 'recycle' any modules where needed; if I deem a module not worth keeping, it gets sold.

This approach will do me until FC arrive - if they're worth it, I will already have enough cash now without having to grind for it (due to selling most of my fleet), and if they're not worth bothering with, I might even perform a proper wipe in the second half of next year. For now, I'm pretty happy with how things are in the game for me.

It feels like after performing a spring clean, lighter, leaner and less cluttered. And as a side effect, because I don't need as many ships, my material stockpile has increased nicely also, across the board (except for Improvised Components and Pharma Isolators... grr).

I know it’s nothing but my role-play is that I have shares of the company with cash options out so I have to maintain 40% in credits and my fleet value counts. So 4B in assets means 1.6 must be cash. Then I want to hold 1B for fleet carriers. That’s 2.6B in credits needed as a baseline and that inflates as my credits grow and gives me an incentive to keep my fleet leaner.

Obviously no enforcement mechanism but it’s the fiction I’ve made. That cuts my 2.8B to 200M in free credits. Gotta carefully consider purchase of any new ships.

Yes, the "spring cleaning" vibe is legit. I might store my fleet in a different system as well (though probably closer than Colonia lol). Out of my fleet of 13-14, I really only use 5 or so ships on a regular basis, with the rest being super task specific or just collector items (Sidey and Challenger).

I have been revisiting ships that i "skipped" initially and I 100% agree with the Courier. It is my go-to for the illegal black box and surface scan missions. Accordingly, I made it look like a stealth fighter.

Though I still have no clue what the hell to do with my Keelback. I think I have it sitting somewhere with a fighter bay and full rails. I do not think its left the dock lol

I keep a modest fleet of 5 ships that I can use for the missions I like to run. I've tried others and sold them (some numerous times), while others I have completely ignored for various reasons. Mostly because of the lousy way the game designers configured them. Or should I say crippled them. The English gaming mindset is a curious thing... ;) I'm not about to dump what few credits I have, or kill my access to the engineers as I have NO desire to go through that boring grind again.

I too am in a wait mode to see what happens next year. I still play, although not as frequently as I did during the first two years. I'm hoping for some real single-player gameplay in the next big release. This could be wishful thinking given the way this game as been managed over the last three years, but as some would say hope springs eternal. If it's a dud, then I will likely just keep the game as a simple space-based shoot 'em up arcade game that I play occasionally and attempt to find something else to stir my interest. We'll see what happens...

Thats an interesting method. For me it was hard to ignore the 2 bil just sitting there, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to find a way to stash it. Now staring at that 15 mil makes me a little nervous lol

I found the Witchhead perfect for parking ships. Far away enough to not succumb to the temptation, and not remotely as expensive as shipping to Colonia (which I've done before and wouldn't do that again unless you want to wipe your balance good, but then buying lots of Cutters and suiciding is much quicker).

You know, it kinda makes me sad a little that we're even having to contemplate these things. Credits situation completely out of control right now (or alternatively, not enough/diverse credit sinks in the game).

i've been playing it that way from the start, i always found the urgency of running on a shoestring budget added something to the gameplay that being absurdly rich did not. i even had to take a risk and fly without rebuy a few times, just like a regular peasant...

...just did a stocktake. 9 condas, 5 cutters, 3 vettes, and many others (51 ships in total) - but i only use a vulture and a python. yay poverty.

fresh start in a lifestyle game is a bit like suicide. what drove you there? let that sink in 🤪

elite i just don't play as much as to need a reset, nor am i a hoarder or a badge collector, which is odd in a game which consists of an awesome simulation in the biggest biome ever seen with some sticks&gum contraption style hoarding and badge collecting gameplay loops thrown on top but ... 🤷‍♂️, i just go my way.

returning to a game that had left an impression on you, though, after memories have quietly retired into the deeper cavities of your brain ... that's a blast.

The issue with fleet size I encounter in other games also - I play Forza (both Horizon and Motorsport) and I get showered in cars after every other race whereas I'd prefer the (PS1/2 era) Gran Turismo approach of sticking to a small collection instead. With games nowadays it's all about quantity above everything else it seems. It's nauseating (imo).

Oddly enough, I was thinking along those same lines. I think i will put them at Artemis Lodge (a really cool Coriolis station in a belt), or a planetary/or asteroid base. Some type of cool/ badarx secret lair type place.

Well, yes and no. I do have a lot of credits, and I have been able to buy every ship I ever wanted. However I have spent over 1000 hours in the game. If i did that much time and still have to scrape by, there is something wrong.

Hopefully fleet carriers will offer something worthwhile to burn a bunch of credits on, other wise I'll have to buy a lot more cutters

I post up stuff on inara that follows my commander and his situation so it keeps me a little honest. Flying around in a 'conda and 200M doesn't feel nerve racking but a 25M hit would hurt my plans.

I like your storage method though, that's pretty good.

Check out Taygeta. It's even nicer than Celaeno (I lived in both systems for a while, during my AX days:)).

Have about 2000 hours in game, and would have close to 10bn in assets if I didn't blow so much on ship transfers in the past (some of which deliberately to destroy credits). Right now I would say I am... comfortable;)

The softest "reset" I do - whch I regularly do - is that when I hit a new billion I simply don't let my balance drop below that again.

Usually it's a case of doing a bit of mining to reach a new number and then I hop into a DBX/Phantom, go and do a bit of mat-scavving, run some missions to obtain a new permit and that'll get me a hundred million, or so, credits and I can go back to doing more risky things.
Works quite well and creates a regular change of pace. (y)

I have found myself doing the same thing. I just recently hit a new threshold and I'm skimping on things as that is my new credit 'floor'. :)

Edit: Except I don't do mining. I disliked mining after being forced to do it to unlock a engineer. The new wrinkles just don't interest me at all.

I don't know, OP. I mean, suit yourself as you see fit, of course, but for me the fun of the early game, or at least my version of it, was back in the 2015 versions of the game. I haven't lost a ship in the game since then either.

I never really played the game to amass large amounts of credits nor get the big ships anyway though. I was pretty well set after I got my Cobra Mk III kitted out. The rest has more or less been gravy in that regard.

I wouldn't really care so much about losing credits and I don't have much progression with the Engineers yet anyway. I might eventually get around to resolving that. For now though, I'd be more concerned with losing my general game-play history as a Commander within the game.

Just my perspective on things, of course. Glad you're finding new ways of keeping yourself entertained within the game.

Cheers.
