Help with Planet Mapping, Please?

So, I decided to go to Sgr A* and figured that would be a good way to get my exploration rank from Ranger (78%) to Elite.

There are also some things I've never witnessed, and I'd like to.

Also, I'd like to have "Darth Wonko" tagged on some things.

But, I'm a bit confused, and I don't want to go much further before I figure this out.

I'm currently in the Smojue SU-0 B7-1 system. Let's take a look at planet 1 in my System Map:

SMOJUE SU-0 B7-1 1 - System Map.png

It shows EILIG discovered the planet, but it says nothing about anyone mapping it. I'm pretty sure in other systems I've seen "FIRST MAPPED BY" with someone's name there. I see the same info in FSS and I know for a fact I've seen "MAPPED BY" info there.

So, I loaded up my Surface Scanner and shot probes all around the damned thing, so now it looks like this:

SMOJUE SU-0 B7-1 1 - Cockpit..jpg

... and this in my Surface Scanner:

SMOJUE SU-0 B7-1 1 -DSS.jpg

So, then I go back into my System Map, and it says:

SMOJUE SU-0 B7-1 1 - System Map 2.jpg

Does "You have mapped this planet" mean that if I sell this data and nobody beats me to it, then my name will be on the "FIRST MAPPED BY" tag?

You need to turn the data into a Universal Cartographics office at a station before you are registered as a "First Discovered" or "First Mapped" tag.

On the road to SagA you should pick up 100's of these opportunities.

This will give you an idea of the value of the different bodies you're likely to encounter.

Once you get into the core proper you'll have thousands and thousands of light years of systems no one has ever seen before. Go a few hundred ly perpendicular to the straight line from the Bubble to Sgr A* from Smojue and you'll be in that region already.

Great resource. Thank you!

I was thinking about doing just that.

I've learned a lot on this trip, so far. There's nothing like actually doing something to learn how to actually do it right.

For example, I had no idea that one could use the DSS to map rings. I hit one by accident and saw all of the hotspots appear. A few hops away from Smojue, I found pristine icy rings with hot spots of void opal, LTD, Alexandrite, Grandidierite and some other high-end resources. Unfortunately, there are no overlapping of LTD or VO spots, but the do overlap like LTD > Grandidierite > VO, so that's not too bad.

I always wondered how people found hot spots.

Of course, at this range, it'll take 14,000 jumps in my Type-9 Heavy to do the mining. LOL
