Steam Controller Won't Work With ED

Hi folks,

I bought a Steam Controller in the recent sale and, as a player who switched to PC from PS4, I'd really like to use it with ED. However, when I launch ED, the game ignores the custom controller configuration I have set up through Steam. This is a real problem as, for example, ED recognises the whole right D-pad as LSHIFT, when I had configured it to be eight different button pushes. This therefore significantly will reduce the functionality of the controller.

Can anyone tell me how to get custom controller configurations working with ED? All the guides I have found predate the ED launcher and therefore I'm wondering if Steam is confusing the launcher for the game and applying its settings to that rather than the game application itself.

Many thanks.

Is this perhaps to do with some "Big Picture" settings? I am just stabbing in the dark but I remember reading somewhere about someone having difficulty with E D recognising their controller and it was fixed by a change in the "Big Picture" settings. (I don't use a controller in Elite so am really speaking from ignorance but maybe a search including that might help?)

Good luck

Try to apply the config to the desktop config in steam. I play in VR and this was the only way to get the custom config to work. I don't know if it has to do with the game being in windowed mode or that the config is only applied to the launcher.

Yeah, I thought this might be an option, but I didn't want to have to give my desktop configuration up simply to make one game work.

If you pull up the steam overlay i think you can tweak the steam controller config on a game by game basis without using big picture. (may have needed a setting flipped, but that might have just been for non-SC controllers) It has been years since i tried elite with steam controller (did not like using it for elite) so i may be mis-remembering.

Edit:
In steam right click the game in the left side text menu=> manage=> controller config. You should be able to setup the controler to emulated basically any type of input/menu setup you want. (using multi button combinations will likely be needed, or menu based options to fit all the keybind onto the SC). There are leaders pointing to the various input methods on the SC shown, and you just need to click on box connected to the appropriate leader to open the options to configure the controller.

This can also be accessed in game via 'shift+tab' if steam over lay has been enabled for elite in the games steam properties.
The button in the steam overlay to click is in the upper right hand corner under 'Game groups' and 'steam key' etc.

For macros voice attack works well. I have heard of others using autohotkey.

I'm too looking for a different solution, but didn't find anything yet. The "macros" are limited for whatever reason in the desktop config. I configure the controller for the game and then apply it to the desktop config. Trying to change things in the desktop config messes up some settings, still can't figure out why. I started playing Elite with it and now after 2000+h the muscle memory is strong and starting with a new input device would be like starting all over again.

Cheers Crimson. I've done this, but then the configs I've set up are then not applied to the game. For example, if I've made the configuration in Steam that Button A = LSHIFT, when I fire Button A in game, LSHIFT won't fire but rather ENTER will, or whatever button is set to fire from Button A in the default "Desktop Config".
