Oh dear, I need to CircumVENT!!!

Wow, ouch! I agree, complacency is the #1 killer of explorers. ;)

I made a similar mistake this year. After 47,000 jumps and 3 million lightyears, I finally made a fatal mistake that cost me data. I hit boost when I was near a peduncle pod. I could swear that I was clear of it, but I think it decided to jet into my path at the same moment, and my wing clipped it. My shields were no slouch, but instantly I was seeing the explosions. Like you, I had a moment where I thought I might contact support, but instead decided "Nah! I'll dust myself off and get right back out there." I made a route of the ELWs I had found, so that I could re-scan them. And ignored the rest, which is logged in EDSM anyway.

I can only imagine your loss. I came close on my second circumnav, while meeting up with the DECE group out around BP. They had picked a planet that was several Gs, and I wasn't paying attention...was just a few meters from the surface (being watched by all in attendance) when I got control of the fall. I salute you for not raising a ticket on the loss! o7

This is what makes the difference between an ExplodaConda and a true ExploraConda ;)
(managed to perform a few Oops! moments myself on Planets - 2 Rings of Shields lost was the worst Oops of them)

Instead of a fighter you should have an orbital lander that could go down and gather materials while your ship is still in orbit. No need to land your ship to put SRV on the moon, just let the Orbital lander drop it off (or collect materials by skimming the surface instead of clumsy nauseating SRV).

Oh... we don't have that yet in Elite? Shame.

Perhaps, if you find your own crash site, you can retrieve the data canister?

Sorry for your loss CMDR. Did you find any undiscovered systems on the very rim?
Only one or two - fellow Cmdrs had beaten me to the edge a long while ago.

My undiscovered were probably not actually edge systems - I very occasionally used the route plotter to take me between edge systems rather than just using jumponium so they were probably just inside the rim.

Still enjoyed the trip and mapped random systems just to leave my mark - not sure what happens there, presume the 'mapped by' bites the dust 'cos rebuy?

I still have some DECE data to sell plus DW2 and LRH (30 kylies to go!). I think I would go slightly insane if this happened to me but I'd like to think I'd have the same attitude as CMDR Arnoldo and pull on my "big boy pants" too. Respect CMDR! o7

Rumors of your long lost explorer data canister is spreading like wildfire in the galaxy!

Frontier Development may be listening..... it could be an AMAZING content boost to this game!

Do it. Go search for it.

I like it. Reminds the movie "Alien" :)

Was lucky here, 100kly on my way around the core for the second time, banged a bit to hard on ball of rock, fortunately only down to 19% hull, my sympathies!

Feeling quite laid back about it now, just gotta do it all again - thank crunchy for a good Christmas break!!!

I admire you CMDR. I myself is heading to Sagittarius as we speak. First time on a very long voyage, for me.

Hope no mishaps happen to me.

That is a tragedy. ED is a bit of a special game where such tragediesare possible.

Closest I've been to that is bouncing my DBX off an asteroid 20kLY from the nearest space station while trying to impress a friend with my Han Solo like skillz0rs atflying in asteroid fields...
Had 20kLY to go and 27% hull remaining in my shieldless DBX.. I did makeit home, though.. so it was in the end not a tragedy.
