Newcomer / Intro No Insurance payout? Lost everything I've ever worked for in this game.

Hey, I'm confused about what just happened.

I died in my Vulture (the only ship I've ever bought in this game). The insurance said I could buy one back with a loan but it wouldn't let me accept the purchase so I had to purchase the Sidewinder for Free. I also didn't receive an insurance payout for my lost ship. That ship cost me like 30 million to buy and fit and now I've lost everything I've ever worked for in the game? Did I do something wrong? :( This is the worst feeling to be sitting in a sidewinder again with 0 credits.

Yes you did something wrong.

Insurance isn't a pay-out to you, it is what you have to pay to get back your ship.

When you see the rebuy screen you have options - buy as per the lost ship, deselect some equipment from that build so that the rebuy cost is lower or take a free sidewinder. There is a loan thing too but often the loan isn't enough so you have to start deselecting equipment from the build.

People tell me that the free sidewinder option is too easy to select by mistake - I wouldn't know as whenever I see the rebuy screen I clear save.

So (in before the crowd) hence the saying - "Don't fly without the rebuy!".

I deselected everything on the ship and it still wouldn't let me re-buy. So because I can't re-buy I lose the entirety of my ship and it's module costs? So I'm just out 30 million now? :/

Yes - you can lose a 30mil value ship because you didn't keep 1.5mil in your bank balance to cover the rebuy.

Have a gander at this Wiki page it explains it quite well:

BTW - you should not be sitting in a free sidewinder with 0Cr - any credits you had when you got destroyed should still be there in your balance.

Yea you're right, I had like 200k or something, the 0 was more figurative than literal in comparison to what I lost I guess.

I feel your loss OP. I've been there and done that too. You still have your reputation, combat rank and knowledge about how to make credits. You will be back in a Vulture much quicker than it took you the first time.

This was my first day playing since 2017 so I'm afraid I'm relearning everything and am incredibly discouraged at this point.

In that case: Welcome back to the Elite Galaxy commander!

Rewards have increased a lot since 2017. Some say making credits is too easy now. Feeling discouraged is natural but once you/re back in that Sidey and get your first credits I assure you things look brighter already. And next week we'll have a laugh about it.

This video explains how to get rich quick starting in a Sidewinder. There are dozens of such schemes just google for "elite dangerous get rich quick" to find them.

Yea, I have 160 hours of game play to buy that ship. Definitely "no time". :/
I think I had my first bilion credits in less than 160 hours, and I'm still a newbie :giggle:. 30 milions lost? My rebuy insurance for T10 is now 35 milions, so... well hop up in some mining ship and mine painites baby, 100 milion credits in an hour or two .

Welcome back! Yeah, as the others have said, the money just pours in now compared to how it was in 2017.

I recently came back, too - exploration is raking it in - a 60 jump run just scooping and honking the D scanner without any other exploration stuff made me 1.5 million.

I also zeroed a spare account to try out the 'new player experience', sitting on 7.5 million after about 4 hours play and all I've done is courier missions in a loop around the 'Newbie Zone', some rudimentary trading (12t capacity in a Sidewinder!) and 'kill stealing' bounties from the cops in a High Res for a couple of hours (by far the most lucrative of the activities noted here!). And I'm still in a Sidewinder, too!

With the experience you have you'll be back on your feet in no time, once you've blown the cobwebs off and flexed the old reflexes

I am rather ashamed to admit that my mucking-about in the noob-zone account has over 16million in the bank. Looks like it is about time I cleared that save again.

Oh, I dunno about that. But maybe time to leave the Noob Zone ;)

I think I want to try my hand at all the in game activities whilst inside the noob zone, flying only the Sidewinder with whatever limited upgrades can be found in that area, only to leave when I've tried everything, and accrued at leat 10 McR - better get my skates on, too - the follow on missions from the beginner stuff pay 100k each (I have 4 of them!) and the timers are down to 5 days!
