Oculus Quest

Does anyone here use the Quest to play ED on the PC? If so, was it easy to set up, and was it worth the expense?

Oculus released today the Oculus Link Beta, with it you can use a Quest with a USB Cable on a PC. I'm sure someone will test this soon and write over it here in the forum or show it on Youtube. That way it should pretty simple to use the Quest on a PC with ED.

It's amazing to buy a Oculus Quest helmet first, and then by using a USB cable to turn it into an Oculus S helmet. :)

You don't need the link.
Have a look this the following thread. cptwhite was kind enough to do a setup video on how to get the Quest working wirelessly using ALVR with ED:

If you don't want to read the whole thread I posted cptwhite's videos here:

And doublefrag has been doing some fun cockpit walkarounds with the quest:

I'm torn frankly. Wireless freedom with the quest, or better resolution with the Reverb Pro.

I’m somewhat disappointed with how pronounced the foveated rendering is on the Oculus Link. For example sitting straight and looking straight ahead produces -very- noticeable resolution downgrade for the radar itself and all the icons/indicators displayed on it, I need to tilt my head downwards from center to see it clearly. Same goes for the PIPs, before when using the OG Rift I’d only need to tilt my head ever so slightly to the right to be able to clearly read the SYS/ENG/WRP labels, where as now they are an unreadable garble until I turn my head way right, until they are clear and center on the HMD. I guess maybe Elite is a game more sensitive to foveated rendering then native VR titles.
Interesting, this could be an issue in any game with smallish dashboards, i e just about any cockpit/car sim. I'm assuming you can't change the rendering settings, perhaps since doing do would introduce more latency?

My cable arrived early, so I’ve just had a quick try with ED. Some thoughts:
  • easy to set up, “add headset” in the Oculus software, plug in the headset, select “link beta” in the headset menu (took me a while to find that at the bottom of a settings menu!)
  • deep blacks and vibrant colours as per the Rift CV1
  • Godrays as per the Rift CV1 :(
  • Tracking slightly looser than the CV1 or S, game menus shift very slightly when moving my head, looking around the cockpit is a wobblier experience
  • Not as crisp as the S, better SDE than CV1, closer to the CV1 for clarity.
I couldn’t see any pseudo foveated rendering as mentioned by @Jordan Qwent (which is quite noticeable in, say, the native Quest version of Vader Immortal), though I’d say the sweetspot wasn’t as large as the S.

Game performance was worse with a fair few stutters (I went through several training scenarios with the Quest and S on the same game settings), the frame rate monitor showed the game dropping into ASW (32fps) quite often so I’m not sure if that is working as good as it does on the S.

It’s still early days and beta software, so I’d expect improvements to be coming along.

TL;DR - the Rift S is staying on my bonce for the time being :)

So the Rift S is still the mask of choice for those of us who will use it mostly tethered to a PC, yes?
For me, yes.

I still like the idea of being able to quickly go to a stand-alone unit so I’ll be keeping a close eye on Quest updates, as well as the possible wireless solution Oculus mentioned for next year. The Rift S got a fair few upgrades in the months after release, so if the Quest Link follows a similar path I’d expect tracking to get better. I should imagine the dedicated optical lead that’s getting released next year won’t hurt either.

Don't forget: it is a Early Access Beta, so there could be many optimizations and changes until it get out of the Beta. So all experience are only the actual state.

But I'm sure the Rift S will have his advantages and is not a useless product because of Quest Link. That is one reason why i bought a Rift S and not a Quest 3 weeks ago. Specially the latency will be better and is important for VR Users that have more problems with VR sickness.

Link and other Solutions to connect the Quest with the PC are more a "nice to have" feature than are a true feature, but I'm sure on a Quest 2 this will be a true feature. The Quest was not developed for connecting it to a PC and that cause some problems than can't be fixed with Software alone. A Quest 2 that is developed also for the use with a PC many things would be much better. Oculus knows this as well, also that the Users really want this feature.

Im hoping the Link beta will end up improving some visuals as they are hit and miss. Also, the bandwidth will hopefully be increased as the cable improves, although whether or not the fibre cable will make a huge difference is unclear.

I'm having some trouble with it, namely that the Quest image freezes while the game continues - I'm running an 1-7 9700 16gb RTX 2070s, so I shouldn't be having this problem - i just get about 5 minutes flight and then it freezes up. Not really happy with the whole way Oculus Link is set up, its just not proper.

Has anyone tried both the Link and ALVR? Is either one clearly better?

There's a brick wall between me and the router (the PC uses GHz Ethernet but of course the headset will be on WiFi)
The USB cable is only short.

I suppose I could run a USB 1/2 cable into the living room for the game controllers...

I have a GTX1060 6gb and have been running ED on the Quest using ALVR with little issue at all. When the link beta became an option I got myself a compatible USB3 cable and thought things could only improve. I tended to have the Quest charging while playing anyway, so having the USB cable plugged in wasn’t going to be an issue. As I say, ALVR had no issues and ran ED very smoothly with no noticeable lag. I also have Beat Sabre which is much faster paced, on that you notice a lag, so my expectations were that the link may show me that maybe there was a slight lag I wasn’t aware of. Anyway, when using the link my frame fates dropped drastically compared to what I was getting with ALVR, I tinkered about for ages with settings, I even found settings in the Oculus software that I played around with, nothing I did seemed to get me to the same place I was with ALVR, which is a shame as I have recently been playing about with voice attack and ALVR does not support the microphone on the Quest so I am having to use an external microphone now. I am going to try another cable option, although the one I got is the An,er which was the recommended one for the job.

it seems to be an ED issue as Beat Sabre is awesome with the link compared to ALVR, with zero lag.

if it’s not too much hassle and you have a decent 5gb WiFi network, i would definitely give ALVR a try.

Thanks.
I've got a 2m cable that seems to work and another one that definitely doesn't. Oculus Link seems to push cables to their absolute limit. It will be interesting to see what the Oculus cable is capable of when it comes out.
