General / Off-Topic Rise of Skywalker ( spoiler free please)

Watched it last night - I enjoyed it (mostly) and there are some great bits, but I do have a few problems with it:

  • too much “info dump” and “sort out previous 2 films’ plots” in the first half hour or so, felt the scenes were too quick and a bit stilted because of this
  • I’ve never warmed to the Po/Finn wannabe Han/Luke friendship, never felt natural to me so their dialogue and “banter” just fell flat, as did most other “comedy” parts.
  • Curse of modern action scenes - camera too close and shaking around too much. You’ve spent millions on Special Effects, I’d like to be able to appreciate them, plz.
There are some excellent bits though, so to me it’s a bit like the Prequels in that regard. I grew up with Original Flavour Star Wars, so while I (mostly) enjoyed the film, The Mandalorian has sorted out Star Wars for me this year.

Also, the film’s robots are still the best characters in the Sequels :)

Will try to see it but not entirely sure when. Maybe the week after Xmas.

The 1st 2 of the latest trilogy have their problems, sure, but I have no idea why "fans" are freaking out so badly*.... The prequels were godawful minus a few entertaining set pieces, for a start.

* Well I have a few suggestions but I'm not going to go into it!

I attended a triple bill last night and TBH was not overly impressed by the new film. My main impression on leaving the theatre was a kind of relief to have finally seen it through rather than having actually thoroughly enjoyed the film. In fairness it did have a huge amount of work to do but it really does feel weighed down with having to dot every 'i' and cross every 't'. Consequently it feels very much like the Lucas prequels in that regard - very fan service-y. I doubt I'll remember this one as fondly as I do The Force Awakens (which when all is said and done is just a fun romp much like the original), or to be honest most of the rest of the franchise including the prequels.

I will say that the real surprise was rewatching The Last Jedi on the big screen. I saw that film when it first came out and several times since on Blu-Ray but have never really thought that highly of it. I don't know what it was about seeing it this time but I think this film has finally clicked with me. It still has problems (and in context The Rise Of Skywalker has far more IMO) but has much more to say than any of the films since The Empire Strikes Back. I love the way the film recontextualises the Force and the idea of light and dark being far less prescriptive (The Rise Of Skywalker feels far more conservative on that front, effectively returning to a far more binary world view), and there are some incredible moments and very fine performances. It's still overlong and some scenes (cough flying Leia cough) should never have made the final cut, but I ended up enjoying this rewatch far more than I ever expected I would.

For me its:
The Force Awakens > The Last Jedi > The Rise Of Skywalker

All that's over now is the story based around the Skywalker name. Of course there are Organas, Solos, Kanobis and all sorts . And lets not forget how many musicians have had dozens of "retirement tours"- they can write yet more skywalker stuff if the want to, although I gather this last instalment hasn't gone over very well.

It is about a woman, in a man's world. She is the lead, the main character; at last (apparently). In a massive, international block buster, film franchise. This is what every red carpet and interview, with this leading lady, has been about.

The film? They say it ties up the lose ends, answers all the question and generally, tidies everything thing, up. Sounds like good old fashioned, woman's work to me.

The Barron family has had a loose tradition of going to the theatre (a once in a blue moon treat) to watch the SW's releases but this year my kids don't seem that interested and I definitely would prefer to save the money. I guess we'll check it out one of these days when we're on a road trip and staying overnight in a motel and it comes on HBO or something.

I'm waiting for the reboots of the originals where PC Disney make Chewie a transgender and have him/her/it wear a dress......social commentary is Star Treks domain not Star Wars, Star Wars should be all about the ships, the fighting, the red lasers, the big ships, the green lasers, and light sabers. You shouldn't have to do too much thinking when watching a SW film and sadly that's all gone with the convoluted story line nonsense.

But I agree with those that say 1,2 and 3 are the worst.

1) Ja Ja Binks.....THE crappest character in the history of crap characters, utterly cringeworthy.
2) Should have had a VERY brief bit of Annakin as a kid right at the start then get him straight to the age he is in 2 for the parts with padme, because the age jump from 1-2 was ridiculous, or they should have cast an older actress for 2 and 3 as Padme.
3) the "love" story of Padme and Annakin was awful, badly written and badly acted.
4) "anni".....jeez that's a girls name fer gawds sakes, don't do that!
5) The "fall" from the light side into the dark was too fast and made no sense whatsoever.
6) R2D2s rocket jets that he loses for the "later" time period films 4,5+6.
7) The Pathetic kiddie voices of the trade federation robots.....I mean all gravitas immediately gone, they'd defeat people easily because they'd be too busy laughing at their voices to fight back
8) Basically aimed at kids. and most kids movies are tripe.

7+8 do a little better, but not by much. They're drowned in oestrogen, main lead female, ALL leaders female, stupid gung ho people ALL male.

BB 8 awesome though ;)

Oh and bad guys still all white and mostly British, racism much? Oh apart from Finn, who immediately defects.

Free to view 🤫 is also a possibility much cheaper

This film has basically been 42 years in the making. I suppose it's an ending although now that Disney has gotten Star Wars the franchise will go on forever.

In my opinion JJ Abrams is not a great director and has never had one original idea.

Rey's character was over-acted in places and, despite not really liking Kylo Ren's character in episodes VII and VII, I think he carried this film.
The character played by Dominic Monaghan was totally worthless to the plot and superfluous.

Some bit were predictable and then there were some less predictable twists. At least Abrams didn't do what he usually does which is use too much lens flare which becomes distracting and annoying after he while.

May the something something be with something something....
