I remember when ...

... there were no orbit lines or ADS and the only way you could discover planetary bodies in a system was to fly around and use parallax movement of closer objects against the skybox taking note of the small movements and go and investigate the moving dot ... haha, fun times, oh ... and no fuel scoop either.

The 5 year anniversary has had me thinking back to my Premium Beta days and how much has changed from those early days, ED is an incredible creation and has come a long way and hopefully many, many more light years to go.

😀

“You young squirts couldn’t lance a pimple without an electric vibrating scalpel and a laser suture. In my day I performed an appendectomy with a rusty sardine can. This one time I was caught without a single instrument and removed a uterine tumour with my teeth.”

[He grabs a scalpel and advances on the patient like a knife fighter.]

From Dr Benway prepares - William Burroughs.

I used to do that too, I also remember getting a 3 figure bounty for killing things like cobras, adders, or viper IIIs (back when a viper III was a hardcore kill in an Eagle).

Undoubtedly a great adventure for over 30 years with the Elite series.

Something that marks the life of an Cmdr.

I remember a time when there was no self destruct, fuel scoops, we had the threat of bankruptcy, high fuel and repair prices and brutal unforgiving collision detection (along with vanishing pad numbers). I saved a week for a laser, and almost bought one of the pre-engineers special weapons.

I miss those times.

Oh yea, I'd completely forgot about the vanishing pad numbers hahaha, that was definitely a sphincter tightening moment when the numbers vanished just as you entered a station in a 'not very manoeuvreable' ship!

I joined at the launch of horizons, and I remember being bowled over at the price ground base assault missions were paying compared to everything else on offer, I mean with that sweet 75k payout, how was I not going to "cut the power". Those pay what, about three million now?

...yeah, when hitting a rotating Asteroid even at modest speeds was sure to ruin the day.
Accidentally boosting the Ship into one - or a Station? Almost certain death sentence.

Dangerous times - but it teached folks to honor their environment. Or re-assign the Boost Button :D
