The rift is working ok with the oculus store, but how do I get ED to to launch in VR ( it is a FD ED , not steam) I cant work it out, and I have not got any more hair to pull out

If you have previously been running outside of Oculus, just via the ED launcher, then I found the easiest way was to download ED again onto your machine via Oculus store.

I think you can also use EDProfiler to force your current downloaded copy into VR mode

You also need to use the 3D mode in VR in the game itself.

As in HMD with headphones (something like that) is not there?
You can redeem a Steam key in your Frontier account, then install ED through Steam. In Steam you'll be able to launch Elite on Screen or HMD. When Launched on HMD, the Oculus app will launch and the game also. No SteamVR required.
To get the message box below I do a right click on Elite, then Play and this message appears.
If I do a left click on Elite it just loads the launcher.

I have tried the redeem option on my account, both Steam and occulus... Nothing!
I have the FD install of ED and a Rift S - this is what I did:
The only time I’ve heard of the options not showing up is when the headset hasn’t been running before starting the game.
You can also disable Oculus Home in the Oculus settings, this means the headset will boot into the white Matrix grid with just the basic pop-up menu bar and screen.
- Start ED Launcher
- Start Oculus
- Start ED game, select Options/Graphics/3D then chose “HMD(HEADPHONES)”
- Close ED game
- Restart ED game, it should now be viewable in your headset

Interesting. Is this a new thing?
Fairly new, it came into the Public Test Channel late last year (October time, if I remember correctly) and is now part of the main release software.
As others have mentioned, you need to have Oculus Home running and your Rift connected before you start ED.
And just in case you have missed it, in the Oculus Home software you need to set it so that it allows / recognizes unknown sources, which ED is when run from the FD launcher.
It's under Settings > General > Unknown Sources.
