Game freezes PC when launching after January update. Anyone else?

@ Strontium Dog
Using MSI Afterburner also didn't change anything unfortunately. I used the slider for the Core Clock and reduced it by 50 points and applied the settings.
Game and PC still crash immediately.

ah soz ya I did not login yesterday must have been yesterdays
sorry the down clock had no effect may be ticket time
could try deleting the gpu worktable xml located in your products folder too

Hello Acen ONYX, thank you for your extensive reply!

You're v welcome. We can only try, and see if we learn anything else useful, through the process.

System specs:
Intel Core i5 6600k @ 3,5GHz
16 GB Dual Channel DDR4 RAM @ 1066MHz, 2x8GB in two slots, two are free
MSI Z170-A Pro Mainboard
Dedicated graphics card, ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

CPU doesn't look like it'd be any issue.

RAM quantity is not an issue.

GPU - I'd wonder if 3Gb was enough, but you've previously said that the game ran fine, before the update, and I'd presume on the same 3G RAM.

Same with your Dual Channel RAM - having run the game before, w no problems, should suggest no issues re RAM.

HOWEVER,
..different Mobo manufacturers can sometimes put DIMM slots in different orders for Dual Channel pairing.

Sometimes, 1+2 / 3+4 pairing, sometimes it's 1+3 / 2+4..!
You'd have to check your mobo manual to be sure of the particular config pattern you'd need to use, to correctly install for dual channel.

Yeah, thought as much myself... Thx for trying to help anyways, I appreciate it!

Random idea you might try...

Look up the way to clear the game's SHADER CACHE, and/or other caches..

I think there might be a chance it's related, because I think it'd make some sense that some game caches are pre-loaded while it's giving you a game menu, before you jump into game proper...

So mayyyyybe forcing the game to "reset" it's cache could be useful.

* * * * *
Do not delete the cache, but perhaps RENAME it temporarily, by changing its file extension.

e.g.
shadercache.tmp
(example only)

Rename to:

shadercache,tmp.XXX

So you retain the original extension behind a Comma, and change the file extension to (example) XXX.

When I do extension renames, or backup copies, I can use my initials, as I've never seen a file type with my initials as an extension. 😁👍🏼

Makes all my changes easy to Find on my computer.
And "saving the extension" behind a Comma means I can never "forget" what it should be, if I need to return the file to its usable state. 😎

Good Luck! o7

Uhmm..
I've been away from the forums a while...

So I dunno HOW or WHY it has seen fit to "re-quote" my ENTIRE previous reply, or what the hashtag "silverstyle" is about... 🤪

Hello again, Acen ONYX!

Thx for your continued input on this!
My RAM is setup correctly, dual channel config and all, my GFX card is able to run the game on highest settings despite the measly 3GB ;)
So my hardware should be fine, as I said, no changes there over the past years.

I googled the shader cache thingy you suggested and found that there should be a file called GPUWorkTable.xml in the main game directory.
The thing is, I do not have that file. My working assumption is that after reinstalling the game, it didn't create that file after "first" launch,
because it keeps crashing immediately, before getting to the point where it polls hardware and jots down config files. At least it looks like that to me.

Happy to hear from you if you have more suggestions!

Also, #SilverStyle FTW :D

Is your monitor plugged into the correct port, I.e. is it connected to the dedicated GPU rather than the motherboard.

This does indeed make a difference as if you are using the mobo rather than the card your system will likely try to use the on board GPU rather than the dedicated card.

Hey everyone, I'm glad to report the issue is solved!

It turned out there's a strong possibility the game didn't crash at all, actually ^^ But it's a bit hard to tell.
I did all of the things listed above and I spent the entire afternoon and parts of the evening doing other stuff, among them another reinstall,
more clean up stuff, another GFX driver reinstall and Windows system file verification.

What happened was, when I tried launching the game after all that, it was still showing the same behaviour, meaning: hit Play, screen goes black, PC becomes unresponsive within seconds, kills Discord, kills Firefox, did not react to any keyboard commands at all. For all intents and purposes it looked crashed to me.
When it happened before, the longest time before I hard rebooted my machine, the max time I let it sit like that was about 2 minutes.
Now, when it last "crashed", I got rather annoyed and went out to have a smoke. About 7 minutes passed, I got back to my PC, suddenly the sound was going off,
the Frontier Crash Report went up and told me the game crashed. I sent them a report and loaded up the dump then noticed that the game was somehow running, although it told me it crashed (for the first time). BUT, it was working and not crashed. Confused as I am by now?

So, the solution for this crock of sh*t for the entire time after the update might have been, just let it sit for HOWEVER long it takes when hitting play. After that initial boot, the game works fine again. I cannot stress enough that for all my experience with computers, it appeared properly crashed to me. Utterly non-responsive for minutes on end, killing backround video, Discord and other things.

THANK ALL OF YOU, who have gifted your time to help me figure this stuff out, I appreciate it a lot!

See you in the black Cmdrs o7!

PS: If any moderator sees this, pls mark the thread as solved, if possible.

Sadly, it did not improve anything for me. If anything, it made things worse tbh.

So the game still takes nearly 10 minutes to launch (for the first time/day) and freezes my PC, often crashing other apps in the background (e.g. Firefox, Discord). While "launching" it prevents my computer from accepting ANY keyboard input. When I finally hear the game sound and the computer is reacting again, the crash report tool comes up and tells me the game has crashed (though I usually have to hit ctrl-alt-del to get to the desktop again...), but it is actually running fine in the background (after freezing the PC for nearly 10 minutes, mind you...)

Also, I was out Thargoid hunting last night with a few squad mates and we had MASSIVE instancing issues and encountered the "invincible heart" bug once again.

I'm usually a very patient person, but this is getting more ridiculous by the day.

10 mins to launch is network or firewall\anti virus(ship anim just spins) related I am in game from launcher exe in under 60 sec 1.5 min at most ever since 2013 apart from known server downtime...………………...

It's also caused by the PC trying to use integrated graphics to play rather than the dedicated GPU.
