Have we been lied to?

Its a question, not a statement, though to be honest I feel that I have been lied to, or at least what was promised to us back during the crowd funding still, 5 years on has not been put into the game.

We were promised space legs, being able to walk around on stations and our own ships as well as on atmospheric planets. We were promised we would be able to scoop fuel from Gas Giants, flying through amazing looking cloud pillars. Still to this day, one of the most major aspects of the game has not been implemented. Frontier at this point seem more interested in other games than actually providing to us what was promised.

It does not take 5 years to create what was promised, and in the face of other games that have managed far more than this game, I cant help but feel that I was deceived to an extent by Frontier, David and the development team. They should be pulling out all the stops to put into the game what they promised. If the engine is the issue, then change the engine. Frontier have a responsibility to deliver on what was promised to us and they should be focusing all their efforts on it.

Okay, rant over. I am very, bitterly disappointed that so long after the games launch, we still dont have half of the things that were promised in the initial games pitch during the crowdfunding days. On top of that, the Cobra MK IV, the ship given to those of us that backed the game in beta, is one of the most useless ships in the game. It needs to be totally reworked.

Meh, I am full of apathy right now for this game when others, some not even released yet, are doing it better than Elite.

This has already been talked about countless times on these forums, i doubt adding to it would do anything more than background noise to be fair.

Adding to that, they never really promised spacelegs, Gas Giants and all, the only time they officially mentioned it was in the kickstarter description (and subsequently linked videos), and it was under the "Things we would like to add later down the road". If you took that as a promise, then it's on you, not really on them.

That being said, all the recent leaks, clues and talks point to "The New Era™" (that's supposed to be out by the end of the year) being the much anticipated SpaceLegs™, including basebuilding (those still are leaks, so to be taken with a grain of salt), so i guess part of your wish will be granted Soon-ish...

Moreover, keep in mind that Elite barely generates any revenue, so if they want to keep people working on the game, they basically need to have secondary income sources. It's not that other space game we're talking about, they do not have infinite budget. Same for your comment on Engine change, that would basically mean remaking the game from close to scratch, which would take an g lot of time too... So maybe it indeed takes 5 years to create what was promised, that other space game's devs haven't been able to get anywhere closer than a messy, buggy pre-alpha to release in 7 years, and they're basically doing all of that at the same time...

My point being, Development takes time, if you want them to churn out weekly game-changing updates, spoiler : it isn't gonna happen, ever. If you are dissatisfied with the current pacing, and want to protest, there's barely anything you can do besides not playing anymore. Whining on the forums isn't really going to do anything, i think you can guess that you are far from the first to be doing that kind of posts, and far from the last.

Oh, and the MkIV is a fine ship, don't use it if you don't like it, but i seriously doubt it's gonna change...

FD's own financial statements say otherwise when it comes to revenue..

A lot of games have planned features that never go live. FD's situation seems worse because the lack of certain features is exacerbated by the overall lack of gameplay depth. I don't think FD was trying to scam anybody in making promises, I think they were just simply too incompetent to deliver.

We were promised space legs, being able to walk around on stations and our own ships as well as on atmospheric planets.

Braben mentioned that several times and said "space legs" is being developed. It is most likely the main theme of the upcoming expansion which is due December 2020. Most gamers would like to walk in ships, stations, on planets. ED was not originally developed with EVA so this is like integrating a new game in ED. We can only hope that Frontier delivers all those things with the expansion. It can be expanded with future updates.

The Gas Giant related gameplay isn't part of the original kickstarter, it were ideas that the devs would like to do, no promises. Check the Development Plans.

They can't just change the engine, because it takes years to develop a good engine and it would be like developing an entirely new game. They use the Cobra Engine for all their games, because its their property so they can fully customize it. They'll keep upgrading it in the future.

It seems like you haven't played ED when it was first released in December 2014. It has greatly evolved and improved. During the Beyond series of updates the devs reworked many core gameplay mechanics such as exploration and mining. Free updates in 2019 made ED more user-friendly for new players.

I don't see a direct correlation between length of play time and length of membership on this forum? Am I missing something? ;)
Yes I know that many players aren't members of the forum and yes a player who was a kickstarter might not have known the forums exit. And they might be regular players and all that. But to me it just seems a little strange that someone who has apparently been part of the game for this long, who seemingly knows what is in the game and what isn't, after all this time decides to have a rant? Nothing has radically changed in the last 12 months, so why now, especially since there is a major update scheduled within the next couple of months AND a DLC dropping later in the year.

Look, I am a cynical old codger, if a post reads like a troll post, smells like a troll post and is written as a troll post then I tend to think yes it is a troll post.

Hmm joined the forums today, has made one post - but is a dedicated kick start backer. Something just isn't adding up here, would be interesting to know the hours the OP has played and when he last played. After all a lot has been added since 2014
It's because...

I am a old guy as well, but I'm still trying to keep a open mind on most things (well, what's left of my mind...)

The only two people I have personally met that play this game have never posted here. One hasn't even read a single post.

So who knows?
