General / Off-Topic Space Force Is Here!

Fixed version for accuracy.

I suspect likely more a case of trademark infringement, being a logo associated with a brand?

Neither that, probably just a case of it being very similar to the previous Air Force Space Command logo, which apparently predates of several years the first appearance of the Starfleet logo in a show.

At the end of the day, there's just so much you can do with common symbolism.

That version of the Starfleet insignia was in use as early as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, in 1979, 3 years before the AFSC was formed, suggesting it's likely that with the film fresh in their memory, that's when they were first inspired to copy it.

The original version at least had distinctiveness in the two crossing paths orbiting it, representing their role managing satellites. Instead of the one hyperbolic path seen in Starfleet logos, a legacy of earlier designs in the 1960s shows.

The logo used in TMP was just the asymmetric delta shape typical of Starfleet overlapped on a circular frame, quite different from the AFSC logo from 1982. If anything, that reinforces the notion that there was no actual copying or "inspiration", it's just that if you want to symbolize the prowess of your space force, a stylized world with orbiting stuff and an up/forward pointing arrow conveys a basic message in a very simple way.

In the same way a downward sword impaling a planet conveys an immediate image of power through violence. ;)

It appears my post was assimilated.

I'm very sorry, didn't do it on purpose. It's just muscle memory kicking in at times, you know, hive mind and stuff.

Historically, of course, it's something which has happened throughout the history of space travel, at least one of the 70s Apollo missions' logo was also heavily inspired by one of the older 1960s Starfleet symbols, which predated the more recognisable one.
