Quality of Life: One Thing

Boomarks Bookmarks Bookmarks Bookmarks Bookmarks Bookmarks Bookmarks Bookmarks

Although I could use more of them and a grouping structure better than me adding numbers at the start, I find that with regular bookmarks (blue), squadron bookmarks (green) and bookmarkwinder ship markers (red) I get by okay.

Bookmarks were definitely one of the more useful QoL additions to the original game imo.

Yes, I could do with more, though. I am always having to find bookmarks to delete in order to use elsewhere, and I have Sidewinders and Eagles at key stations as acting bookmarks.

I like realism as much as the next commander, but having to strip a ship and repeatedly access different menus while doing it is painfully archaic. For such a detailed and futuristic game, you would think that Elite would allow us to do this, and to save loadouts for quick swapping when we use a multipurpose rig. Some people even have a combat, a mission-running and an exploration loadout for ships like the Dropship. So, probably far more for Anacondas and Kraits, on average.

Is this process really supposed to simulate removing and applying each part systematically, in real time, or is it just a lazy series of interfaces?
The reason it's so clumsy is because it was never designed for that. Initially we were only going to be allowed to own one ship at a time, and they've basically never updated the UI for that.

  • Make the leading reticle brighter (no matter what color it is, the main problem with it is that currently it's the dimmest part of the HUD).
  • Either make the canopy more durable or even better, keep the reticle visible after canopy breach.
  • Fix the target triangle bug already! (It's extremely annoying that sometimes - pretty often - the target orientation indicator triangle is not rendered around the targetted ship.)
  • Wing beacon should be enabled by default (and get rid of that button as it serves no real purpose whatsoever)
  • Make the module target indicator rectangle visible even if your target is a member of your own squadron.

According to Deft Beck of NeoGAF (who I assure you is a stellar chap) -

I think it's a flawless definition.

If you had one - just one - quality of life improvement that would boost your enjoyment of Elite in general, what would it be?

Mine would be having different HUD configurations along with the ability to customize their colors and save them in the game, right there in my cockpit. No external files. No more uniform appearance. Select a HUD from a list, mess with the colors until you get them just right, and save it to that specific ship or some external list. The one that got close but didn't make my top choice was updating the Clipper. If can't be classified as a medium ship, give it a damn fighter bay.
One thing, that's tricky.

Right now I think I'd go with sort out the mess that is the cockpit modes. There could be various ways to do this but I think the simplest is to have separate fire groups for each mode and only allow options within a mode that are valid, have the system remember which group you were in in the other mode so you can easily switch between two roles without having to also fiddle around with fire groups. For instance even if you only have guns and the system scanner have one group set up those separately in each ship mode then you only need to press one button to swap between fighting and scanning rather than two (or three if you want to get picky on gun deployment). You could go more complex by allowing more groups but this limited approach would help a lot.

As the number of modules and so on increases and the complexities of which things work where expands this gets incresingly important. On my exploration ship which has all the things juggling all the fire groups is a complete pain.

Less UI I control and more gamey and if I can have a second... While we are there it would be nice to have external mounted sensons not need to deploy hardpoints to work.. I can see why they want to do this with the warrent scanner but can we please get rid of that for the wake scanner! And the data link and composition scanner things, crikey guys that is irritating.

This... I add numbers for 'important' and an 0E: for engineers, 0M: for mat traders, 0B: for bubble, 0C: for Colonia.... would be so nice to colour code/sort these instead...
