Frontier Interim Results: major new paid-for release will mark beginning of new era for Elite Dangerous, targeted for launch at the end of 2020

"Four years later, the overall Horizons attach rate to lifetime unit sales of the base game is around 50%, demonstrating the strong ongoing engagement by the Elite Dangerous community to additional content "

I realise marketing's stock-in-trade is deception, obfustication and agrandisement, but does this mean anymore than (only) half the 'people' who bought the base game also bought the Horizons expansion.
Good of course, but would have hoped for better.

Frontier has now achieved four out of four successful game launches, with Elite Dangerous (December 2014), Planet Coaster (November 2016), Jurassic World Evolution (June 2018) and now Planet Zoo (November 2019) since IPO in 2013. All four titles continue to perform well, supported by Frontier's strategy of evolving gameplay, free and paid content, price promotions and active community management.
Elite Dangerous, which launched in December 2014, continues to expand and develop. Frontier is developing a major new paid-for release for the iconic space simulation which will dramatically expand gameplay and mark the beginning of a new era for Elite Dangerous. Targeted for launch at the end of 2020, this major new release on multiple platforms will fall into financial year 2021 (the 12 months ending 31 May 2021).
We have started calendar 2020 in a great position. We're bringing Planet Coaster to console players and significantly expanding the Elite galaxy this year, and developing two major games for release in the same financial year (FY22) for the first time as a self-publisher.
Frontier is a leading independent creator of self-published videogame franchises founded in 1994 by David Braben, co-author of the iconic Elite game. Based in Cambridge, Frontier uses its proprietary 'COBRA' game development technology to create innovative games, currently focusing on videogame consoles and personal computers.
All four titles contributed materially to revenue in the period. Frontier's strategy of launching and then supporting games to achieve multi-year earnings continues to deliver, with over half of the total revenue in the period being generated by Elite Dangerous, Planet Coaster and Jurassic World Evolution. H1 FY20 revenue included just 26 days of sales (plus pre-order sales recognised at game release) of Planet Zoo, which launched exclusively on PC on 5 November 2019. In comparison, revenue in H1 FY19 (the six months ended 30 November 2018) of £64.7 million included almost a full six months of sales of the multi-platform Jurassic World Evolution, which also benefited from a major IP licence with a simultaneous movie launch in June 2018.
For Elite Dangerous, a major paid-for series of expansions called Horizons was launched in 2015. Four years later, the overall Horizons attach rate to lifetime unit sales of the base game is around 50%, demonstrating the strong ongoing engagement by the Elite Dangerous community to additional content. In addition to major expansion packs, Elite Dangerous has a strong back catalogue and future roadmap of in-game personalisation items. This rich customisation model has been further enhanced by the launch of an in-game virtual currency called ARX in September 2019, which has smoothed the purchasing process for players whilst also rewarding regular engagement with the game. ARX can be purchased in packs ranging from £2.99 to £44.99 and then spent in-game on a wide range of items.
Gross profit of £21.4 million was recorded in the period (H1 FY19: £39.3 million, H2 FY19: £15.4 million) with gross margin at 67% (H1 FY19: 61%, H2 FY19: 61%). The six percentage point increase in gross margin in H1 FY20 versus the comparative periods reflected an increased proportion of revenue from own-IP sales (Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster and Elite Dangerous) versus licenced-IP sales (Jurassic World Evolution), following the launch of Planet Zoo in the current period compared with the launch of Jurassic World Evolution in FY19, and a reduction in commission on the Steam PC platform for revenues over US $10m since October 2018 on a per-title basis.
Capitalisation of development costs on franchise assets and other intangibles accounted for £9.8 million in the six months to 30 November 2019 (H1 FY19: £5.1 million, H2 FY19: £8.3m). The percentage of gross research and development costs which were capitalised was 79% in the period, which was similar to the 80% recorded for H2 FY19, and in line with Frontier's normal expectations of capitalising between 70-90% of gross development spending. The comparative figure for H1 FY19 was much lower at 52%, which mainly resulted from a large number of staff working on free updates for both Elite Dangerous and Jurassic World Evolution in that period. Whilst costs for those activities were not capitalised during the period as they were developments of existing released products rather than new products, Frontier believes that investment in free updates is an important part of its overall strategy in supporting and nurturing games after launch to maximise their potential.
Ah! The new extra large stirring stick has arrived from Amazon!

🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️ Run Stuart, run!

They would easily buy EA,Bethesda and Blizzard just to teach them how to make money the morally "legit" way. ;)
No no no, don't you know that FD are now the gateway to a lifelong addiction to online gambling and making unwanted online purchases by introducing Arx. Soon the Stock Exchanges around the world will recognise Arx as the new global currency standard!

Must be true I read it here ….. ;)

Hmm not a bad result for a game that is doomed, in maintenance mode, that nobody plays now, is the most buggiest game ever released and is vastly inferior to all other games. Would hate to see the financial reports if FD got it right then ;)

A great big pile can still have lots of players. Players think gaming is about fun. FD think its about extracting money. Me personally if those carriers drop and have anything like 500ly let alone 1000... Thats not elite anymore, not the spirit of the old or even really in character for the new. It also puts braben dangerously (aha!) close to being a liar for his coments on the galaxys hugeness. It crosses the line by my personal measure, for what thats worth :)

Personally, what your worth here is ZERO

Hehe, they didn't mention the 5th - the unsuccessful Game launch. "Arena", which performed so bad it had to be pulled in record time.

When seen from a pure ELITE perspective, that tells me that plenty of resources will flow into the new IP and the Coaster Console port.
It also explains where the resources ELITE (the live game) was clearly missing in the last Quarter(s) went to, those are ambitious goals.

Elite Dangerous has a strong back catalogue and future roadmap of in-game personalisation items. Alright, I'm going to say it out aloud : If only the Game itself (actual content) had such a strong back catalogue and future roadmap (a public one, not requiring some leaks)...
I'm seeing this very twofold, since the emphasis on monetization IMHO started to smell real bad around here when weighted against the lack/delay of content.
(since DB seems to view monetization/store items as "content" , it's not surprising though)
Personally, not too happy about that one.

Anyway, Investors got to hear what they want and the finances are looking good. DB or his "children" (FDev) won't go hungry tonight ;)
Now let's hope there's still some non-Investor thinking left, so someone creative and innovative can forward the Game with entertaining, deep and fleshed-out actual content.

My predictions : This thread will spawn the two usual sub-threads:

1) "new era has been postponed to may 2021" from someone who doesn't understand financial years
2) "new era will not be free for lepers as it is Elite Dangerous 2 - a new game"

Happens every time...

Incorrect- thread will diverge with...

Will 2020 give

1) old features get the revamp they need
2) small seismic charges

Yes, progress stopped in 3306.
And 0.003% of the galaxy has been visited, so clearly not huge anymore.
:)

The galaxy is huge and even with a 500ly carrier it will remain huge.

Well i dont agree. And if its 1000 its even worse. Suddenly gaining 10x jump range detracts significantly from its hugeness. As some already said beagle point becomes a day trip instead of an achievment.

Edit: its not even purely down to jump range is it? I mean mobile base where ever? I can feel the galaxy shrivveling as we speak. No more isolation, no more epic journeys...

Hehe, they didn't mention the 5th - the unsuccessful Game launch. "Arena", which performed so bad it had to be pulled in record time.
FDev also didn't mention Screamride or Tales From Deep Space.

A game being pulled from digital sale a year after it launched (16th Feb 2016 to 14th Deb 2017) isn't record time. For example, The Culling 2 was pulled from sale 9 days after it launched.

Why not wait until you know actual jumprange and frequency for carriers before deciding how terrible it is.

Not that it makes much difference to an ex-player, my speed build comedy sidey gets more exploring done than your entire fleet.

You can jump 500 ly all the livelong day but having that range wont help you to explore the 400 billion stars in the galaxy. Even with neutron jumping of 100/200ly the fact remains that as of Dec 2019 only 0.042% of the galaxy has been explored.
A lot of that 99,9% is still pretty boring stuff unless FDev comes up with more findable content.

I wasn't commenting on the quality of the exploration only the total we're standing at now in terms of systems "explored"
Yeah, you are right. Anyway, death of distance and number of unexplored stars are two separate issues anyway (not that 500ly with a grindable cooldown is death of distance).
