Mining Question - Low Temp Diamonds

I've been mining for a few years and have finally got around in the past few months to try out the (not so) new core mining as well as switching it up with surface mining (old school method pre-core mining) I use to mine for Painite.

I know when I was core mining for Void Opals, I'd always find Low Temp Diamond cores, but also remember in the past a long time back (before core mining was a thing), you could use the original surface mining method to get them with a simple probe and 2-3 mining lasers (though at the time they were a rare find).

Void Opals I know are only attainable from core mining and Painite can be either surface mining (in metallic rings) or core mining (in metal rich rings), but Low Temp Diamonds are they like Painite now, or are they strictly core mining only?

If LTD's are like Painite and you can get them from both surface and core mining, which is the better method? I know with Painite, surface (old school) mining is the most profitable method...

Well i did some Void Opals with core mining in the past with a big ship. Might have been better with a smaller one thought.
Finding the right rocks was not that easy for me and took some while ( because the ship was slow ). If you do it more often i can be more easy and faster maybe.

Then i did switch back to Painite old school mining in a hot spot. For me way better and did fit out the Cutter for just that.

Now with the changes in selling, i dont know if it is still fun with big ships.

I dont play that often anymore and i dont really care about it. If i feel its not worth the time doin i leave it.
I could have earned way more money, but its boring and so i often dont stay that much time.
So i only got 8,5 bil and all ships and stuff, did everything long enought so there is nothing meaningfull to do left.
Waiting for fleet carriers, will buy one, test a bit then wait for next update.

I've recently tried core mining for the first time, in my effort to try a bit of everything before disappearing into the black for a year of exploring pending bug fix updates and the carrier update slash expansion.

I'm lucky to have two LTD hotspots in my home system just outside the bubble, with very rare traffic, so I knew the yield would be good (no depletion) and didn't have to spend time hunting a hotspot.

While searching for cores and becoming familiar with the colours and identifying the good stuff, I did come across several cores which also had a quantity of LTDs that could be surface mined (plain old laser). Luckily I had a small laser with me but... although I got three tons out of just the surface, it took several minutes to deplete the roid, despite only displaying 7% LTDs present.

Then there's the time to blow the core and blast off surface chunks, waiting for the limpets to stop killing themselves and actually fetch the chunks, took maybe triple the time but gave me almost 20 tonnes of LTDs.

I've never mined for LTDs with just a surface laser so I don't know how long it takes to find a good roid. But assuming it takes the same several minutes it takes to find a good core, factoring in total time, effort and yield, I'd say core mining is probably twice as effective. It's also more involved so isn't so boring.

PS: to find cores I personally just dropped about 1.5mm from the centre of the hotspot, facing the planet, and headed towards the planet in a straight line, with my canopy towards the rocks (upside down?) holding the scan trigger down and using headlook to scan the rocks. The good ones do stand out.

Where are these hotspots that you speak of?

Matipu - selling for 601k credits a ton in the same system too. Help yourself... I'm not rushing to mine any further and selling them to the system stations helps my PMF :)

PS: There's also 5x opal hotspots but they aren't selling too great. There's also 3x Grandidierite hotspots, which is selling better than opals, I think I sold for 500k credits a ton somewhere local.

Readers of this thread previously viewed:LTDs surface or core mining?

I tried to search the forums and just realized I was searching for "Low Temperature Diamonds" and not the acronym LTD or else I wouldn't have started a similar post.

Well cool, as long as I can surface or core mine them then it's fine. Sometimes I like to switch things up now due to the demand being changed since the last update and just wanted to know which method works and apparently LTD's are like Painite, except that both methods are similar with efficiency and I can switch it up depending on what I'm watching on TV. (See surface mining I can watch more shows that are more visual as I don't have to look at the screen as much, while core I can listen to more of what's going on in my shows as it takes more visual time in the game).

best thing i found for LTDs is to go to a haz res of a ring that is pristine. follow the pirates and when the miners start ejecting their cargo it is usually LTDs
