Out, damned spot

My plan before I left the bubble again was to max out my Imperial and Federal ranks by slaughtering people on their behalves and then carry on the killing until I got Elite combat rank. The first two objectives were attained but that only just got me to Deadly. Now at 15% of the way to Elite I just can't take the killing any more.

I'm going to buy a Phantom and flee this so-called civilisation.

There's a reason I always call the Bubble "inhabited space" rather than "civilized space".

Here on 21st century Earth, I live in a "civilized country". That means I can open the door of my house, walk outside without any weapons, get in my car (which also has no weapons installed on it) and drive pretty much anywhere I wanted or needed to go, and be reasonably certain that a psychopath isn't going to shoot at me or my car, or do some other anti-civilized behaviour that would make me regret my choice to live a weapon-less life.

In ED, the equivalent of this, "civilized space", would be places where no-one ever appears out of nowhere and starts shooting at you or requires you to otherwise defend yourself. So in ED, "civilized space" is uninhabited space. It's in the Bubble where you find the barbarians.

Yeah, that Elite grind is a nasty beast. There's no way to avoid just getting the kills, something like 12k to 15k on average, if I recall. It's best taken in small doses.

In my opinion, CQC Prestige (rank 50, for the system permit) is better than Combat Elite anyway, both in the journey and the rewards. (Well, except for the insultingly small amounts of credits you get for CQC.) And hey, no need to go back to the bubble to do it.
Plus if you're a pacifist, in-universe the championship is a simulation anyway. No harm done to anybody.

It wouldn't be so bad, except for the choice you have to make. You can go the optimal way, build a ship and fight easy but boring fights (either against human NPCs, or the easy Thargoids), and that will still take long. Now, in my opinion, combat is much more fun in the small ships, but if you wanted Combat Elite the fun way, it would take much longer to get it.

yeah!
cqc, drives me mad, love it!

Took a break from exploring and got combat to 51% Expert and then left it as it looked like I had least made an effort in trying to fight.

Now all I do is shoot at planets- it's easier and planets don't shoot back 😂

Green Machine is set up, and off I go.

This reminds me of a thing from back when I played EVE. Someone figured out the likely crew size of NPC ships and estimated players had killed trillions of NPC crew members per year.

2kly out, no undiscovered systems yet but I've done some mapping - with a couple of deliberate overshoots - and I like the SC handling. The cockpit view is good. I've landed a couple of times and given the SRVs a shakedown. There's been a hot binary system entry with the fuel scoop activating immediately and the maneuverability and heat capacity allowed it to be handled with no panic or even a particular feeling of urgency. I'm liking the Phantom.

Project Beryllium is a go.

I've circumnavigated a couple of times now, so I fancied doing an across-the-top-and-back-along-the-bottom one. Then I thought why not do 4 in one trip; N-S, E-W, NE-SW and NW-SE. Beryllium having an atomic number of 4, Project Beryllium was born.

I'll see some regions I haven't, I'll get the fun of edge navigation with the added challenge of trying to stay as high or low as possible for many inter-arm crossings. This idea has been incubating in the back of my mind since halfway through DECE, then DW2 interrupted but now I'm off.
