First Impressions of ED in VR

I'm in that boat too, I have a server running empyrion galactic survival but even with all their updates it feels "flat." Pun intended. There are several other games that aren't the same now, that I used to love. Ark, Space Hulk death wing, conan exiles, arma 3. Any of those would be fantastic as a vr port, like skyrim.

Ark used to feature vr but it was so jacked up they hid the feature and it just crashed when I've tried to enable it. 👨🏻‍🏭

So I'm not the only one... But I do seem to be the only one who love's the Vulture's gratuitous canopy. 🤷‍♂️
The Vulture is one of my favorite ships, but only for combat. When fighting the cockpit is sort of "snug", sitting there cramped in between all the heavy metal. Also you can see parts of what's beneath your feet which is a comfort when landing, and it's all about credits and comfort, as a friend of mine says.

Being able to just look at something and press Target Ahead....
I've been enjoying material gathering more in my SRV because I can drive over the mats, look down through the floor (the glass part), and just rapid-fire select to scoop them all up almost at once. This is way easier and quicker in VR than 2D, and it also feels more real. Speaking of, I can visually spot these special outcrops much easier and at further distances in VR, which is cool too.

Another thing I noticed as I don't go mining much, it's easier in VR. 1. The Pulse Wave Analyser scans in 3D, and much easier to spot off-centre high value rocks. 2. The scale, depth perception, and judgement of distance to the asteroids is better, and when using a large ship (not usually recommended I know), I was able to get much closer without accidentally bumping the nose or sides etc

I went from flatscreen to EDTracker and it was a huge game changer, absolutely loved it. I got a bit fed up with all the VRistas banging on about how they couldn’t play flatscreen anymore.

Now I’m a 100% VR tart. My flying has either been improved or unshackled, depending on how you look at it, since going VR. The only thing I dislike about VR is the affect it has had on my bank balance. Initially just an upgrade to get into it, then a full on new i9900ks 2080ti rig just to bathe in the ultra settings with a decent FPS. I’ve told my wife accountant it’s all for work, ahem.

Same.

First Impression was love at first sight and now that they have the starter system facing a beautiful Gas Giant, people who start the game for the first time are in for a treat

Now add surround sound headsets and Elite has me hooked.... If the New Era improves on some of the faults I may invest a few thousand dollars more in an even newer PC if need. Hell, I would even pay a subscription fee for that.

Im getting ready to upgrade my computer to be able to use VR. I have a few questions. I plan on getting the Rift S, can I disconnect the controllers that come with it? I use a HOTUS 52 an don't need them .Some of my controls are on the keyboard, how can I see the keyboard? While Im in VR mode, what is being displayed on the 2D monitor? every once in a while, I jump over to INRA or EDDB, do I have to remove my goggles? Last question, do I need steam? I use the ED launcher and thus don't use steam. Thanks for your help

I have the Rift CV1 but I think most of these answers will be the same.

The controllers aren't physically connected so yes, you can just leave them whereever you normally store them - no need to use them for ED.

Simple answer is ... you can't. You'll need to learn to touch type and/or find your way around the keyboard blindfold. Probably better to try and bind all the functions you ever need to the HOTAS.
While Im in VR mode, what is being displayed on the 2D monitor?
Normally a low-res version of what you're seeing out of one of your eyes. You can increase the resolution in settings (e.g. if you want to record video).
every once in a while, I jump over to INRA or EDDB, do I have to remove my goggles?
Probably yes. It's actually fairly easy to lift them up to see stuff and then pull them back down again. If you've ever watched the streamer Malic_VR he does that all the time. There is also (at least on the CV1) a gap alongside yourt nose. I use this all the time to peer out at things like the keyboard.
Last question, do I need steam? I use the ED launcher and thus don't use steam. Thanks for your help
Nope - you don't need steam. I do recommend you download and install Dr Kai's ED Profiler tho. It makes tinkering with graphic settings (and having different settings for VR and non-VR use far easier).

Get VoiceAttack.

Rift-s and a very fast new omen pc. Equals bliss in Vr. I miss my asp canopy. Currently in a python but building a explorer/mission runner diamond back x
I lurve Vr. Can't play in 2d. Never have with elite. Combat is a doddle. Exploring both in ship and srv are fab. The visuals. The flares the energy.. its all bloody good. Took ages to set up right.
One setting I do use is vr ultra in graphics. Fixes alot of issues especially that dock shaking thing...try it. Just that and hmd to 1.25 and 1.5 if you can. VR is the future of gaming. I for one wholeheartedly love it

You don't need Steam, just launch ED through the Oculus app. As for your controllers, I recommend keeping one close by. You can use it to bring up a virtual monitor with your desktop to access third-party tools, which is handy. Also on rare occasions, the Rift will "lose" the environment and need resetting, which requires a Rift controller. I don't know why this happens - probably the change in lighting or evolving messiness of my "man cave" confuses it, LOL.
