ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Maybe it's just me... But after I play Elite Dangerous with the Dk2 for more than 4 hours :D When I close my eyes I can still see the diamond pixel layout  Anyone else get 'retina burn' from long period of play?

Longest I've played is a couple of hours straight and I havnt noticed it yet, although I do get a bit of eyestrain (and neckstrain looking out of the canopy in dog fights!). 4 hours is a hefty session viewing a screen so close...

I've got my IPD dialed in pretty good. I can go for longer... but my body is weak (I need food :p) If your having eye strain try adjusting you IPD again. until it 'feels' right. :D

Can't get enough of this. I know I'm gonna loose myself when the CV1 is released

Hi
Can somebody point me in the right direction, there was a way to display window on your secondary screen showing what you see in oculus, adding some settings in xml file. I cannot find it for some reason.

Thx

do a barrel loop through the docking bay ...standing up.:)

Yes it is great, for me it feels like I'm at the helm of sailing boat :) Once you get a bigger ship try to take a walk around your cocpit (be carefull with the cable) - awesome experience for me

Hi folks. Just registered an account after lurking here for months because I wanted to share how I got rid of all my stuttering and "white-out (when screen turns light due to loss of position tracking)" issues.

This won't necessarily work for everyone especially those with dated hardware. I'm running a 4790k with a 780ti and could not stand how badly the game performed in the rift. Tried all the suggestions here to no avail but then remembered a trick I used way back to get battlefield 4 running smoothly.

What's the trick? Adjusting the system core parking settings. I'm not expert on this but it has to do with how the OS handles the availability of the cores. Long story short, the utility provided in the link below will allow you to set the cores to never be parked.

I tested this by turning it on and off and have confirmed that this will resolve the stuttering. I'm running at max settings with blur and AA turned ON and shadows on best quality and there is almost zero stutter except inside stations where it happens sporadically. Could not believe this old trick would make such a huge difference.

I have no idea what the long term consequences are by setting the cores at 100% availability so proceed at your own risk. I'm finally enjoying the hell out of E:D and hope you guys get the most out of it also with this method.

Good luck!

Oh here's the link to the utility: http://coderbag.com/programming-c/cpu-core-parking-manager

This actually seemed to help! Thanks! I was having stuttering (losing positional tracking) every ten seconds and gamma type flashes constantly. After this I seen only one flash in one hour of game play. I have to keep my eye on core temps. But during the one hour test no problems.

After 2.04 they seems to be a setting for GUI . not sure what it does, any ideas?.

Anybody else have extreme judder when looking at the exit of space station then smooth as butter when its out of view. I have nearly got rid of judder in station. Outside is smooth. Asteroid is terrible on any setting at the moment.

I currently run a 4690k at turbo 3.9ghz do you think I will improve if I over clock to 4.5 ish. Is this game CPU intensive?

Thanks

Incredible

Got my DK2 working in Beta 2.04 with 2 GTX 970s in SLI with high or ultra settings on everything with Blur on/AA off/Ambient occlusion off/ all i can say is
WOW  i could write so many things about the incredible view with the DK2 in this game but i would take up so much space here :)

i am completley blown away by the sense of depth/scale, the sheer beauty of it is astonishing, i truly feel like i am actually there in the cockpit of a spaceship in the utter vastness of space, and i can read the text on everything clearly, i really think in terms of technolgy this is like going from the stone age to the space age in one step, i really urge people to get either a DK2 or get the CV1 when it comes out just for THIS game alone, not to mention other games coming out for DK2 in the future :) dont even think about getting one, just do it now :D

Thank you so much to David Braben and the whole team at FD for making this game AND to all the people here that are helping to test it ( i humbly include myself in this too ) :) without these amazing people this game would not have been made.

Forgot to add, in SLI mode i do geting a banding pattern somethimes on planets, one moment the planet will look as it is supposed to, next moment banding occours as if the planet has been split into different segments.

Well, I've been playing for, good God, how is it 5am? Uh, I guess 8(!?) hours tonight with no ill effects.

... well, not from the rift anyway.

Motion seems to be much smoother in the latest beta, there's just a few hang ups that happen every now and then, seems to be when a menu is accessing a sound effect or something.

Ok, it seams I got that down now... I've been playing for the last 3 hours, and the DK2 graphics boil down for 2 states for me:

1) Over bright, washed out graphics, which I can fix by opening/closing the galaxy map to get to...
2) ...normal gamma, which lasts until I go to hyperspace, where it reverts back to 1.

I also have to reset head tracking roughly every 5 minutes, and sometimes the camera doesn't start with the game, which can be fixed by un/replugging it.

Also, and I mentioned that before: Since the 2.04, the side panels have become harder to read.

On the subject of reading sidepanels, have you tried turning on Blur in the graphics options, it made reading text on the panels clearer for me, i also find that adjusting the rift position slightly on my head helps over time.

I just noticed that when I'm a bit too enthusiastic using the hotas , the desk + monitor + attached rift camera also shakes a bit. No wonder I get the judders...

It's pretty intensive, but I think it's also related to the spread of work over the cores/threads. Check out my post here, and the dev's reply a few posts down. It's an older CPU but the description of what goes on may be relevant.

Ok thanks jabokai . going to hang on for a while see if any updates will come that improve judder. If no joy will over clock the CPU but never done it before. Is they any way to show how many fps we are getting in game whilst wearing the rift as this would help to see how close we are.

I can lower the rift slider but can't read text at all so its not much of a option. Space is smooth but landing is like being drunk lol

Thanks

I also have a 4690K, running at 3.9ghz turbo, i havent bothered to overclock it, my game runs fine coupled with 2 GTX 970s, i see no reason to OC to 4.2-.4.5GHz all you will achieve is to create more heat in your PC case, unless like me you are running your CPU on a custom water cooling loop.

I played ED on my monitor for 30 Minutes...
And, after that time, i must change back to OR...:)

I think i can never play ED without a OR...:)

I'm also running SLI 970s (a pretty tasty upgrade from my 580s!) So far I've found my sweet spot to be Medium settings with the "Oculus quality" setting turned down 2 pips.

With that I get zero judder anywhere (even in stations). For me zero judder is the most important as it sucks me right out of the experience. I'm going to give your recommendations a try tomorrow though. Do you get any frame drops in stations with those settings?

Anyone have some more info on what that "Oculus Quality" setting actually is (is it some some kind of super-sampling at high settings and up-scaling at low settings?) It seems resolution based... Turning it all the way down (or even half) is pretty nasty...

What the! I have a single 970 and on high preset (with shadows and textures down to medium, AA off), I get the same performance as you..

I definitely haven't touched the rift quality slider!

BBtw the rift slider essentially lowers the resolution the game is rendered at, and upscales it to 1080p.. I'd avoid using it if possible.

Same for me with the station exit, really strange! The asteroid belt though is super smooth for me with everything maxed out.. can't explain it
