A Note to Those Who Salivate over the idea of SPACE LEGS

NOTE to Moderators: I post this because in my opinion I do not see ED and NMS as direct competitors in the space game market place. If I did this post would never see the light of day in this forum. There are some similarities to be sure but the main similarity is one can fly ships around in space and that's where the similarity ends.

The main focuses of the two products are totally different.

However, if you disagree then by all means delete this thread. (extra note: I'm not an NMS influencer, I bailed on NMS 3 days after after release and 2 days of play. I went so far as to have STEAM permanently delete it from my account which I didn't know you could do until I asked - that's how ticked off I was about it in 2016. But not anymore)

All that said: to you guys who salivate over, dream about and even (uhhh... nope not goin' there) Space Legs. Read on.

For those like me who couldn't give a rat's backside about space legs (I think the feature is both a waste of FDev's time and resources and would get old real quick if implemented) bail, do it now, don't waste anymore time on this thread.

OKAY - Let's get on with it.

Space Legs is already available - where might that be you ask. Well - I'll tell ya. No - Man's - Sky! And it is the REAL DEAL.

I know, I know; NMS sucks - well it used to anyway. No one can deny that but since the Beyond update it don't suck anymore and that's pretty easy to verify. All ya gotta do is watch some You Tube Review videos from the last 3 or 4 months, read reviews (yes, some people actually do still use written words to publish reviews) watch gameplay videos, etc, etc. 'Cuz I'm here to tell ya NMS is all about space legs AND it doesn't suck anymore.

You can walk around just about anywhere you wish, build bases (even under water), enter the atmosphere of planets, mine, trade, explore, fight and do it almost anywhere you want to and watch yourself do it. One can move instantaneously between your furthest flung bases just by using a teleporter (that's pretty cool).

At the present the only things in ED that you can do on that list are MTEF. AND - you can only do those in space. Well - you can fight in SRV's I guess - that's a kind'a space legs, ain't it? NOT!

OH! and for the PVP among us - Multiplayer is fixed. Up to 32 players allowed in what Frontier calls an instance and 8 in an invite - I think - don't really understand that nor the difference between them.

So if you've got the Space Legs itch (you better let your last partner know about that - ahhh - geez that's not how I really wanted to word that but - PC and all) - go give NMS a look.

We can.... Medium-Term Expenditure Framework in Space in ELITE (??)

Might want to explain what you meant by "MTEF".

I'll hazard a reply here, as I recently gained an appreciation for NMS after leaving it abandoned since I bought it. I respect your view, but what I'll try to do is humbly colour a little bit of detail about why I started to like NMS, and why, eventually, I uninstalled it last week.

1. The sheer joy of exploring locations, caves, and seeing various types of wildlife.
2. The creativity and freedom of Base building and blue print collection. A big plus for me was being able to build bases underwater.
3. Various types of exo-craft were a lot of fun.
4. Some potential for fleet management, but it wasn't enough to keep me interested in that part.

What put me off eventually was:
1. The repetitiveness of procedural generation.
2. Lack of a compelling enough story (I think they could have done far better).
3. Lack of meaningful multi-player and interaction (it's too lonely for me. I like having other players I can encounter. I like the idea of having factions and politics out there).
4. Loneliness - I know it was a key theme of the whole "Traveller" thing, and that there was a certain existential element (life is a simulation) to the storyline, but once the novelty of the 4 points eventually ended, I didn't like that feeling and I wanted to move on.

With Elite: Dangerous, I don't get that feeling. I know there are other players out there. I'm part of a player faction, and I know that - even though I'm mostly a solitary player - I can always jump back in with other Commanders and get involved if I ever wanted to. Unlike with NMS, I'd like base building and space legs to be an extension of a living galaxy.

Hope I've contributed in a meaningful way to this thread :)

NMS is too cartoonish for my tastes. Everything: distances between planets, planet generation, characters.
Yeah, this is true, though it is not exactly too cartoony for me, it's an ok game, but a tad bit obtuse at times.

But I'm pretty sure it'd be pretty crappy game if it tried to be hard scifi - procedurally interesting hard sci-fi life (which pretty much is the main point of NMS) would be hard to pull of believably.

NMS is good simplistic fun with a lot of stuff in it, but all of the individual bits are really naff. Worth a punt on special offer but not actually good at anything.

It can't come close to competing with ED for space/spaceflight/exploration if that's your thing.

A thread dedicated to encouraging people to try a different game, on a forum dedicated to a specific game, doesn't become worthwhile or add to the conversation if prefaced with the insight that you used to dislike the game you are peddling, but no longer do.

Whenever someone supports space legs, Bob drowns a bag of kittens. Think about that. THINK OF THE KITTENS!

P.S. This game is not dead, yet, but it is, how shall I say this...getting into its 'golden years'. It is now too late to introduce space legs, with so much work left to do on the spaceship aspect. I really hope that space legs gets cancelled, even though that will mean that a lot of players leave the game over broken promises etc, I selfishly believe that these are the players that the game can live without (and don't get me wrong, of course the game can live without players like me as well), so I'm not that bothered. At some point I believe Frontier needs to decide if it wants 'real gamers' in this game, or just casuals who will never push the code hard enough to discover its myriad foibles as well as its genius.

IF you want the casuals, then by all means go ahead with space legs, base building, etc. But if you want this to be one of the important games of the 21st century (no it's not, currently, but it could be), then you need to spend just as much effort as space legs would take, overhauling the game and relevant mechanics to support hardcore gameplay (both pve and pvp). Somewhere down the line the development of this game simply became whack-a-bug, both canonically and technically ;)

P.P.S. If you guys want to run around and shoot stuff, I STRONGLY recommend Borderlands 3. Running around and shooting stuff has never been more rewarding.

Is there any true money to be made in this "hardcore gameplay" whatever it is? I mean, unless the New Era update is something significant instead of brushing a few mechanics, the game is going to leak players like a sieve.

I'm not salivating for space legs, but if fdev are adding it I have no objections. I'd quite like to walk around my ship and stations, to walk into the crew lounge to hire someone, to stretch my legs on a far flung planet and collect some mats by hand, to do the guardian sites on foot and take out those pesky sentinels with a laser gun, no, I'm no salivating. :p

Not sure what the point is here.

NMS is a good game from what I see. ED is a good game in my opinion.

If people want to play NMS they can do, if people want to play ED they can do.

People want space legs in ED because they want space legs in ED.

Otherwise i think what you are saying is kind of like saying no need to play Battlefield because you can shoot other people in Fortnite.
