I agree 100% with Drew here

I watched some of that gave up when he was on about the galnet staff all working on new era, since FDEV clearly said they were making sure all the text for FC's and new era was up to scratch which is positive thing and means new stuff is coming rather than DOOOOOM ! as he was trying to imply. In fact they mentioned fleet carriers first, something he seemed to ignore as it doesn't fit the GAH DOOM everything's gone wrong narrative.

Given the open letter tantrums we've had about minor bugs recently, where people directly asked for content to be pushed back in favour of bug fixing its more giving the players exactly what some of us asked for rather than some sort of sinister plot.

In his words I'm just trying to keep him honest.

However, we also want to mention that the narrative/writing team are not solely responsible for writing GalNet articles, but also a number of other duties that contribute to the creation of Elite Dangerous. With the advent of the Fleet Carriers update and the 2020 release, their efforts have been focused on ensuring that all of the text required for it is done in time.

Yeah, but angry doom and gloom videos get more hits :D

I agree with the OP agreeing with Drew (who agrees with me, LOL). I listened more than watched, and I'd much rather have Galnet as the topic of my "radio show" than the never-ending commentary on primaries, caucuses, Trump, ad nauseam that I'm usually stuck listening do as I perform daily chores. I also very much enjoyed the Lave Radio show regarding a similar topic. You Brits have soothing voices!

Drew was very respectful at Frontier and didn't just talk about the Galnet stuff. There wasn't much doom included as well. He also included Stephen's post actually. It was very well informed and civil.

Just not overly accurate. If you pin your doom conspiracy theory on the last half of sentence and ignore the first there's an issue.

You should become a content creator. Then you can wax poetic about Elite all day long to your loving audience of Russian bots :p

Would you come on as a special guest ?.

I hope they just need the resources and therefore they dont have time to update galnet.

The lore is cool, they have so many things and threads they could use.

I'm sure it will all be back online as normal mid year.

I just wish they would communicate a little. Not asking for detail, just summary key info would keep everyone one engaged.

I listened to the stream for half hour or so. For sure not everyone cared for the old Galnet fluff. I thought these pieces added a thin layer of life to the game, and I'm still sorry they are gone. Especially since the Galnet Audio was developed.

So far as Galnet and development, I have wondered whether many of the stories (particularly non-interactive stuff) had been written in bulk long ago, with each piece put in their place on a release schedule reaching ahead a planned number of months/years. Maybe the development roadmap had intention to replenish the material to support planned new expansion releases. But for whatever reason, that article release schedule fully clocked out without replenishment.

Or not. Hopefully some of sense of movement will return with future paid expansions.

I don't have any problem with Galnet being out at the moment. I wasn't a fan of taking down the "fluff" entries, but that was in August... The Galnet freeze at the moment is because of the updates, which they specifically said.
The stream also wasn't solely about Galnet, but about the use of lore in general. Galnet is just a part of it.
It's the way stories are told in the game and how new gameplay features are explained with lore that would completely kill off the game world (telepresence, 3D printing fighters), because obviously nobody thought about what it does to the setting.
It's about the Thargoids starting off so great, with excellent assets like ships and bases and all, but then it's just a shooting gallery in the end.
There is a Codex, and the stuff that's in there is great, but there isn't even an entry about the freakin' Pilots Federation, which is huge THING in the game world and absolutely significant. Every single Commander is part of it. It's the reason we are not just Captains, but also called Commanders. Things like that. There are a lot of those.
I always loved Elite lore, even gamemastered a pen and paper campaign set in the Elite 2: Frontier universe once, which was long before ED launched. I used Traveller for that, actually. It's just sad to see it disregarded and unused so much.

To be absolutely clear - I 100% agree with you, agreeing with the OP, agreeing with Drew (who agreed with you). ... I think. :)

Have Frontier previously paused Galnet content to add fluff to updates?

Hmmm not sure . Mostly people always moaned about galnet in the past can't remember anything other than that really.

We'd remember the huge forum wobbler if they had, so probably not. That means this update is obviously much better than all preceding ones with sprinkles on top.

I don't usually like or watch Streams as most Streamer's just sprout out bullsh.. but I watched Drew's Stream all the way through & he speaks a lot of sense.

It'll be interesting to see whether

1. By the time FC's FINALLY appears AND the next paid content arrives, the damage created by the current void in Frontier's Galaxy, causes severe damage to potential future sales of that paid content.

2. Knowing how these things work in Management circles, once you cease doing something, you never REALLY start it back up anywhere near to the level that it was at when you stopped it.
In other words, I not expecting much in the line of future lore or narrative.

Nice piece though Drew......pity Frontier doesn't show your enthuiasm these days.

IMHO ELITE vs. Lore has a few deep issues, which I think are highly problematic :

- History rewrite / "parallel Universe"
A solid part of the original lore (defined as : existed in previous titles) has been thrown overboard to create a new Situation of a supposedly underdeveloped mankind encountering some superior new Threat called "Thargoids". According to MB, some "scuffle" occurred in the past against them, but that meant "Mankind barely survived and that was only against a scouting party of the Thargoids. Now they wonder what happened to their scouting party and return".

There's a few issues with that alone, since it's simply wrong. The Thargoids (as a species) barely survived, mankind was mopping the floor with them using nothing but mere Cobras using Military Lasers and later nearly wiped them out entirely with the Mycoid Virus. Saved only by a brave CMDR delivering them the only cure.
However, none of all that supposedly happened, which throws us into some weird parallel Universe and invalidates the existing history almost in its entirety. On top, almost noone can safely say anymore (outside of a few snippets from FDev) which part of the lore is still "active" and which went "cold".

Even some in-game Tourist beacons containing lore snippets seem sometimes in conflict with the "new lore", as they contain "old lore" that supposedly ceased to exist, which ends up being rather confusing and making it all very obfuscated.

- Lore vs. in-game assets
Basically ranges from missing Systems to wrong System types or locations (partly credited to old 2D Galaxy of oldest title) over wrong or missing Body types of lore locations all the way to simply missing things that just don't exist.
That leaves everything even more fragmented and chaotic, since we have "a little bit of everything" but also miss alot of things that should be there.

- Lore progression / Narration
Despite the best hype efforts (i.e. "Winter is coming"), the Narration turned out often very poor, absolutely glacier-paced, even the biggest events of the Galaxy didn't even affect Players for the most part and the reaction even of NPCs towards the supposed events on-location too often was simply non-existent. That meant it typically wasn't credible nor engaging.
Many of the minor Storylines were so weird/obtuse, they could easily be entirely missed. At some point, there were supposedly upto five separate Storylines going on at the same time - all while most of them could hardly be noted even if one actively looked for or tried to make sense of them.

So despite offering itself for countless assets in-game, those typically don't exist.
Hence there's no places to go and investigate and maybe (maybe....) get a little hint to additional background Information or other places to seek. Nothing.
And thus, there's basically nothing one could do to actively investigate stuff and there's nothing to discover at the end of such a road.
As a consequence, it's all more like "feel free to ignore, doesn't matter anyway".
And when that's the verdict on what should be the biggest details/easter eggs/mysteries of the entire Galaxy, you just know something is very very wrong.

I take it the whole complex would belong to "fleshing things out" - and rightfully deserve it.
Unfortunately, that doesn't belong to the "can be monetized" bucket and hence got little more than the usual MVP treatment. It costs money but short-term doesn't bring any in, hence no work is being invested in the face of other projects demanding alot of resources from the team.

Over two hours. Hat indoors. Halting speech pattern. Sorry, can't do it fan-fiction dude.
He wrote 2 official ED novels.
He wrote 2 of the most engaging story lines that we've had in game in Elite Dangerous.
I am sorry you are upset about the hat.

As one new player recently put it so aptly (albeit unwittingly): "welcome meh".
I, for one, somewhat reluctantly welcome meh and thus continue to enjoy E: D despite its flaws and despite the butchering of its lore by FDEV.
