Good advice. Would you please be sure to let the media know this, too?

Media over here are doing a pretty bang-up job on presenting factual information with caveats where applicable; fact-checking social media rumours, presenting direct input from scientists and so forth. Also, not wanting to make it too political, but guess which famous American kickstarted the 'oh it'll all die in the summer' hoax on national US media? Oh well. Also, enjoy this: Source: https://twitter.com/thefix/status/1240041548672380931?

And now we're getting to the part of the play where it turns out endlessly lying for nefarious purposes is a bad thing. And when billions have been invested into convincing the most at-risk group in the US that 'it is just a flu', 'it is democrat hoax', 'it will all be gone in the summer', 'they are just out to get Trump' and so on ad nausea, there are going to be consequences. And I wish it wouldn't be this dramatic, but it is revealing that a dramatization of Chernobyl describes what happened her perfectly well.

OMG where do You think the air is coming from? there are air conditioner systems which do what? keep the air static? Dors and windows, there is air flow nearly every where. Also, if You limit this rule (to places where the air does NOTmove at all! if You find one!) please name it accordingly! You make people feel safe falsely otherwise

Does this mean that the UV lights on my HVAC are not effective? I have both HEPA filtration and UV lights on my system?

I try to go easy on you Ian despite vast differences of opinion but a post like this honestly makes me wonder why I bother.

I know you think you're smarter than everyone, especially lysan and I, but the irony here is that your condescension is directed at the only two people on this forum with the presence of mind to actually prepare for a worst case scenario should that be where this is heading. Maybe you should consider dialing back the attitude, and the America bashing, too.

I wonder if the virus fears the heat, when I read this.

WHO calls on Africa to “wake up” and prepare for the “worst”.

World health officials on Wednesday called on Africa to “wake up” to the threat of the new coronavirus, stressing that the continent must prepare for the “worst”.

"The best advice for Africa is to prepare for the worst and to prepare today"', said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO)

Really?

Some are probably still reading the Mueller Report with glee...

In before the close?

For the last 24 hours in Italy, 4207 new cases, 475 deaths, world record for a day.

There is a silver lining though: the exponential increase in new cases seems to be stopping, as hoped for. It seems total lock down is working as expected. The impact that has on the number of deceased will take a bit longer though... :(

New case reporting spike anticipated as more testing comes online.

New $10 self testing is coming online soon.

Al these one-liner quotes are not helpful without the proper context. Data accuracy and testing is continuing to evolve.

.Went out to get cooking gas cylinder refill because the local gas company is shutting down, (even though we have a 6 month supply...)

Jeeze, what a stupid thing to do.

Not going out. Again.
If it comes to it, I can build us a solar stove. It's chaos out there now.

Trite is an understatement

On the plus side - not much is being made of the impact all this might also have on the current flu, but hard to think the measures being taken won't drive down the numbers on both.

If anything, all the resources being put into this fight might actually lead us to more aggressive countermeasures against all contagious disease outbreaks.

Look on the bright side.

DIY stoves are fairly easy.

Obviously don't try this if you are daft as a brush. Beware of alcohol flames that are almost invisible in daylight and make sure its burned out cold and empty before you refill it to avoid setting yourself on fire. Also never put a pan directly on top, rest the pan on something solid. These work well in your BBQ, which has a steady base a grill for the pan is flame proof and contains refill disasters.

The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday called the new coronavirus "an enemy of the humanity",

"This coronavirus presents an unprecedented threat. But it is also an unprecedented opportunity to rally against a common enemy, an enemy of humanity", said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at a virtual press conference.

For the last 24 hours in Italy, 4207 new cases, 475 deaths, world record for a day.

I rally against a common enemy of humanity every time I refrain from telling the IRS I've made money somewhere.

Does this mean that the UV lights on my HVAC are not effective? I have both HEPA filtration and UV lights on my system?

There is conflicting information on the effectiveness of home filtration. The CDC does recommend HEPA filtration, in healthcare settings, when directly exhausting air outside is not possible, but not all HEPA filters are equal and most home ones are not going to be anywhere near as effective as what hospitals or modern airliners have. UV can kill coronavirus on surfaces, but it seems to take several minutes of high intensity UV to reliably do so, and this won't happen if the virus isn't being trapped by the filter.

It may well be a better than nothing for removing coronavirus from the air. However, this should only even come into play if you are trying to isolate someone who is contagious from those who are not infected, under the same roof. Even if this unavoidable, I'd bet almost anything that the rest of the occupants would be less likely to get infected if you simply blocked off the air returns in the isolation area and opened a window.

Really?

I can't read the NYT article because of that silly paywall, but one doesn't need to go any further than the official White House transcripts of the President's statements, or his own Twitter account, to find highly misleading, and occasionally blatantly false, statements.

US preparation and response to has not been particularly good.

At least everyone seems to be taking it seriously now...
