Combat with Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS (side by side video)

Not the best pilot by any means, but I do OK, so thought some who are less experienced might be able to see some strafing tactics, as well as the joystick itself.

No commentary on this one, just a lot of ass kicking. ;) I figured some people might like to see what I am doing with the HOTAS Warthog stick during combat, in the same way I did a video for the Thrustmaster T16000M. And yes, I do have labels on the controls, I only set them last week and initially had trouble remembering some of them!

Everything is unedited, as I figured some might want to see the basic control movements when not fighting, trying to find targets, as well. http://youtu.be/AjWeoAk0A44

Nice video and well positioned camera and PiP - I highly recommend getting some headtracker and pedals though.

Not that it helps in my case, as I'm an atrociously bad pilot regardless, but watching it, I constantly felt you were wearing a neck brace and had no legs.

Nice vid. I'm upgrading from the X-52 pro to the Warthog at some point in the next 4 - 6 mths. Nice to see it in action, thanks!

Yeah for the price of the warthog i'd rather have a cheaper hotas and get track IR and some pedals too. Though nothing to say you cant have it both ways :D

Not sure if I am missing something in the replies... I have a Track IR, and pedals. I don't use pedals for ED. I use the Track IR in the video.

But thanks, took some figuring out where to put the camera that it would actually show anything decent. ;)

On low, and VERY low for the slider as I have the POV hat at the top right mapped for yaw adjustment, the POV hat at bottom left for roll adjustment, when needed. I do find myself rolling AROUND a target sometimes, so I just have to remember to bring my thumb up to that top right POV hat.

Hmm - I thought you were using a hat, because your view remains remarkably static most of the time - do you have a deadzone set for it?

nice :) I also use the TM WH :) But, aren't you using Pedals or did I missed something? I YAW with the pedals.... couldn't do w/o anymore :D

Love the idea of the TM Warthog, but I have nightmares about the possibility of the dreaded stiction. How's the centre micro-accuracy of the stick?

I also notice that you don't seem to use many of the throttle's buttons and hats during combat. I've found that mapping 'yaw' to my CH throttle's mini-stick is a combat-winning solution. It has a completely analogue action and so copes brilliantly with micro-adjustments.

Another technique I use is the 'Yaw on button press' option. That allows me to switch from roll to yaw instantly and gain full value from the CH Fightersticks extremely accurate tracking. Certainly worth trying out on the Warthog too.

I've had my Warthog stick and throttle for about 2 years now, and I've never run into a sticktion problem. Small movements around the center are very smooth and precise. That's just one data point, but if it's a problem at all, it seems to be affecting very few people based on replies I've seen here and on the Rise of Flight forum.

I use mine with Saitek Combat pedals and TrackIR. Pedals are a bit less critical to own in a game like this, compared to an air combat sim like Rise of Flight, but they're still great to have. It also frees up an axis on the HOTAS controls.

NOTE: There is an easy DIY mod for removing the heavy spring tension on the Warthog stick, which I prefer for fast-paced games like ED. It's not so good for air combat where I want to feel some force around the wing stall point, but for ED I prefer it. It's also great for helicopter sims where I'm making constant very small adjustments to keep the dang thing from flipping over. The mod leaves the stick feeling very loose, but with a small remaining tendency to center. It's easily reversible if you don't like it.

Here's the link on how to do it (and you don't have to remove the baseplate first, like it shows in the video):
