Its sort of a waste and shame really...in the X series you could have claimed the wrecked Anaconda and toed it back to a base to repair..in ED, there is no bonus or benefit to finding a wreck like this.
I think its great to see wrecks around, but shame you cant use them for something.

Yeah, but that would mess up their whole 'make the ships everyone wants so insanely expensive that they have to grind for months' plan.

This sounds more like it...salvaging fits perfectly, and gives reason to explore and discover. I wander if all ships that are ejected will actually appear in-game.

Hopefully you will eventually be able to salvage them. When the FPS content comes maybe it will involve boarding them
Lest we forget, that's how you got your Cobra in the original Elite (well, based on the included novella The Dark Wheel). They go find an abandoned Cobra in a junk yard. And then later he proves he's Elite by shooting down a missile instead of using counter measures.
