Why not a dedicated “Fleet Carrier“ for Explorers?

A simple suggestion:

Small FC - (DEDICATED) Exploration (large jump range) low cost
*Cartographics

Medium FC - (DEDICATED) Everything else (mid jump range) medium cost

Large FC - (DEDICATED) Trading & mining (the announced one) current price

Kind regards to all

That may have been the initial plan, seen in the teasers, but it appears to have been scrapped in favor of a single FC

We don't know that.
Frontier often hide little things in their videos for those who look.
This is the shot of the FC factory... That does not look like a Drake Class Fleet Carrier.
Maybe its another CLASS..
If Frontier are selling cosmetics... i would bet that more ships are coming because $$$.
Maybe smaller classes with less upkeep for the whingers.

Why not a vastly different feature with new assets, days before the first beta begins? Geez, I dunno, let me think.

Having role specific carriers is one solution, but honestly I think it would be far simpler and easier to just have a Stellar Cartography module available for the current proposed carriers. One and done, this single thing would quell a lot of the outrage going on right now.

I like the idea of a Stellar Cartographics franchise licence. Maybe your fleet carrier could earn some money being an agent for data collection from deep space explorers.

To me that looks like "ship kit", but it's still in space dock, so it also could be another class.
Actually, several different classes would make sense, otherwise they could've called the "Drake" "Fleet Carrier" class.
Now I have "Executor class" "Star Destroyer" and "Star Dreadnought" vibes... * sigh *

I think that FC has 12 landing pads in the picture, the Drake has 16.
4 small. 6 medium. 2 large?

I'm counting 8 L in the middle, and two each of S and M on the sides, so 16 as stated.

Maybe, I figure the two up front on top are the large. The side are the small, The 6 rear top are medium.
But we also have the engine placement being very different, the Bridge being off centre, its flat and wide with a very different nose.
Body kits add to the frame of a ship, not reconfigure it.

If you compare that ship to the known fleet drake carrier it looks very different in many ways.

It might be a 16 landing pad ship the same as the Drake... but i would still argue that its a different class vessel.

I know FDev said they started off intending to create different types of FC and then "realised" they could give players much more freedom by making them completely configurable but it seems like what they've actually done is reduce our options to a single, generic, FC and then all the customisation is internal, related to the facilities and the UI, rather than visual.

Personally, I like looking at stuff so this is a bit disappointing.

It seems like FDev are always reluctant to do more 3D modelling than the bare minimum required but, given the modular design of FCs, it might've been nice if they'd designed them in such a way that allowed them to create 3 or 4 derivatives without the need for extra 3D modelling work.

Thats what I see, and it is totally the same layout of the normal FC. Just more stuff around the hull, in line with other cosmetics of FD.
The centerline is marked, it just appears the bridge is offset, but thats an optical illusion.

Yeh i agree with the landing pads, the white dots suggest size maybe, 3/2/1 large/medium/small.. But i still think its a different ship. The Bridge is not centre its off to the port side, its directly behind those two white dash marks. The engines are also placed differently, flat and wide rather than 4 square.
