How Would You Do DLC? (With Rules)

There has been a lot of talk around people being unsatisfied with the current model of DLC. Given that it's illogical and unrealistic to expect more in each DLC pack on the current release schedule (every three months or so), let's do a sort of game with this. Here are the rules:

- Every DLC pack you come up with can only have a maximum of four habitat animals.
- You can only do four per year, for three years, so we'll say twelve in total.
- Each DLC has to come with some kind of themed set, with exhibit animals as optional, but the exhibit animals need to be balanced with other aspects of the pack.
- For the purpose of this exercise, we will also assume that birds and big marine mammals are not included. I don't care about anyone's individual stance on these subjects in this thread, it's just that currently we have absolutely no idea how or if Frontier will handle these.

The idea here is to create a sort of realistic gauge of how people would deal with DLC if they were in charge, but within the paremeters set out by Frontier's current model. In essence, you'd be looking at forty-eight habitat animals in total across three years to add to the game, so the challenge is to pick forty animals you want to see and divide them across twelve packs.

Any takers?

Narrowing it down and being more realistic was a fun challenge! I assumed you only meant no flying birds are allowed? To be safe I'll stick with mostly land mammals and ground-dwelling birds.

Australia:
Kangaroo
Koala
Emu or Cassowary
Tree Kangaroo
Australian Walking Stick or Frill Necked Lizard

Europe:
Lynx
River Otter
Puffin
Ibex or Chamois
European Stick Insect

Asia:
Axis Deer
Binturong
Black-faced Spoonbill
Douc Langur or Indian Langur
Japanese long-eared bat

North America:
Moose
Mountain Lion
Beaver
Arctic Fox
Rattlesnake or Snapping Turtle

Africa:
African Rhino
Meerkat
Red River Hog
Serval or Baboon
Chameleon

Central America:
Capybara
Sloth
Prehensile-Tailed Porcupine
Howler Monkey
Pygmy Marmoset or Honduran white bat

Taiga and Alpine:
Amur Leopard
Roosevelt Elk
Takin or Himalayan Tahr
Trumpeter Swan
Alpine Newt

Deserts and Savannah:
Tasmanian Devil
Maned Wolf or Giant Eland
Fennec Fox
Secretary Bird
Horny toad or thorny devil

Rivers and Marshlands:
Platypus
Caiman
Proboscis Monkey
Chinese Water Deer
Mata Mata Turtle or Softshell Turtle

Tropical Forests:
Fossa
Indian Giant Squirrel
Siamang
an Indian ungulate, like the Nilgai or Blackbuck
and... King Cobra!

That makes twelve packs! I'd trade those last two in for an "Antarctica" and "Coastal" pack, though... with penguins, pinnipeds, etc. Would trade in the desert pack for a bird pack, too. Even though I love the animals in those last three packs! ;__; Hopefully they'll just switch to DLC with more animals, once they finish releasing all the building pieces and other content they wanted to make. Then we could have bigger packs for birds, aquatic mammals, etc.

This is a great challenge. Also a bit depressing as you realise how long it will take to get through them... Can I check, are seals and sea lions allowed or do they count as large sea mammals? Wasn’t sure if you just intend to exclude cetaceans.

I also will come up with one soon. It will be a challenge but keep in mind their would be some birds and marine animals like penguins and maybe otters( not a marine animal but same due to mechanics) but I’ll play by the rules and not include them or flying birds but may include habitat birds if ok?

Neat idea, let's do it
Disclaimer : I will put some big birds in this that can fly but like flamingo and peafowl they can be made not to. Flying for upcoming birds isn't their "main asset".

I am not however going to put Beavers and Otters as we don't know the future of diving animations.

So

Here are my picks. It was really difficult I have to say. But it’s good to be strict like this. I haven’t gone into detail re the building packs as I’d just like mostly modern-ish versatile building pieces with less theming but that’s just me. The “lucky dip” pack could perhaps feature crucial pieces we are missing for the construction of realistic enclosures, shelters and off-show areas including mesh panels and mesh roof pieces which can be used to build aviary-style enclosures.

Australia
Red kangaroo
Emu
Koala
Tasmanian devil
Exhibit animal - frilled lizard

Europe
Wild boar - or harbour seal if we can have seals
Wisent
Alpine ibex
Lynx
Exhibit animal - ocellated lizard

Asia
Amur leopard
Malayan tapir
Asian small-clawed otter
Sika deer
Exhibit animal - Annam leaf turtle

North America
Wolverine
Moose
Puma - or California sea lion if they are allowed
Beaver
Exhibit animal - eastern box turtle

Africa
White rhino
Serval
Black and white colobus
Meerkat
Exhibit animal - panther chameleon

“Global lucky dip” - for want of a better title
Geoffroy’s spider monkey
Black rhino
Common wombat
Humboldt penguin
Exhibit animal: radiated tortoise

Wetlands
Capybara
Eurasian otter
Red-crowned crane
Australian pelican
Exhibit animal - caiman lizard

Grasslands
Red-necked wallaby
Maned wolf
Greater rhea
Przewalski’s wild horse
Exhibit animal - king cobra

Mountains
Andean bear
Markhor
Mishmi takin
Yak
Exhibit animal - fire salamander

Forests
Brazilian tapir
Clouded leopard
White-cheeked gibbon
Sun bear
Exhibit animal - emerald tree boa

Deserts
Crested porcupine
Fennec fox
Addax
Collared peccary
Exhibit animal - shingleback

Islands
Japanese serow
Southern cassowary
Proboscis monkey

Two open to discussion:

Brown kiwi - I think this could just about work. If not, add Sumatran tiger

Exhibit animal - tuatara. Although I’m not sure the current format of exhibit would be appropriate. If not, add mountain chicken frog.

I figured I would do this as well. As well as the pack title, release dates and animals (including habitats, status and some real zoo holdings) I figured I would also include a short section on what else is included in the packs:

2020:
Australia Pack
This pack has less building pieces, having mostly copies of rock artwork and bronze statues of Australian marsupials (similar to what exists at San Diego Safari Park); it also has a large number of new foliage types and enrichment items.

Brush tailed rock wallaby - Desert-Temperate, Vulnerable (kept in at least 4 Australian collections)
Emu - Desert-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 551 European collections)
Queensland koala - Temperate, Vulnerable (kept in 12 European collections)
Red kangaroo - Desert-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 91 European collections)

Frilled lizard - Tropical-Grassland, Data Deficient (kept in 99 European collections)

North America Pack
This pack includes new North American foliage, new enrichment and a new campaign, where visitors have to convert an abandoned alligator farm into a thriving zoo, while also treating the injured alligators already living on-site.

American alligator - Aquatic-Tropical-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 89 European collections)
Desert cottontail - Desert-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 5 American collections)
Florida panther - Tropical-Grassland-Temperate, Critically Endangered (kept in at least 4 American collections)
Musk oxen - Tundra, Least Concern (kept in 27 European collections)

2021:
Europe Pack
Because Europe already has representation from the building packs, there will be no actual building pieces although new information boards and other auxiliary theming will be included; this pack will also include a range of new European plants and a couple of enrichment items.

Alpine marmot - Grassland-Tundra, Least Concern (kept in 59 European collections)
European red fox - Temperate-Grassland-Taiga-Tundra, Least Concern (kept in 182 European collections)
Great white pelican - Aquatic-Grassland-Temperate-Tropical, Least Concern (kept in 217 European collections)
Red deer - Temperate-Grassland-Taiga, Least Concern (kept in 306 European collections)

Ocellated lizard - Temperate-Grassland-Desert, Near Threatened (kept in 46 European collections)

Asia Pack
This pack does not include a building theme as there are other themes (Indian, East Asian) that already match this continent; there will be new foliage types, new enrichment objects and new types of fencing (such as zoomesh and harp wire).

Blackbuck - Grassland-Desert, Least Concern (kept in 109 European collections)
Goliath heron - Aquatic-Tropical-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 13 European collections)
Persian leopard - Temperate-Taiga-Grassland-Desert, Endangered (kept in 40 European collections)
Sulawesi bear cuscus - Tropical, Vulnerable (kept in 3 European collections)

Veiled chameleon - Tropical-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 191 European collections)

Mesoamerica Pack
This pack would include new foliage and enrichment as well as a new campaign where a small Central American zoo at risk of folding has to be brought back and become a profitable park; along the way the zoo will receive rescued native species that need to be rehabilitated.

Geoffroy's spider monkey - Tropical, Endangered (kept in 10 European collections)
Morelet's crocodile - Aquatic-Tropical-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 20 European collections)
Ocellated turkey - Tropical-Temperate, Near Threatened (kept in 13 European collections)
White lipped peccary - Tropical-Grassland-Temperate, Vulnerable (kept in 9 European collections)

Africa Pack
This pack has no building pieces; instead it includes plants from three main regions (savannah-woodlands, the Congo Basin and the Karoo/fynbos) that encompass the areas the new animals inhabit and some enrichment items; two exhibit animals will be included in this pack.

Black-footed cat - Desert-Grassland, Vulnerable (kept in at least 8 American collections)
Eastern black rhinoceros - Grassland-Desert, Critically Endangered (kept in 22 European collections)
Grey crowned crane - Aquatic-Grassland-Tropical, Endangered (kept in 163 European collections)
Red capped mangabey - Tropical, Endangered (kept in European 19 collections)

Pancake tortoise - Grassland-Desert, Critically Endangered (kept in 80 European collections)
Turquoise dwarf gecko - Tropical, Critically Endangered (kept in 47 European collections)

2022:
Mediterranean Pack
This pack includes some Mediterranean building pieces such as mosaic tiles and hieroglyphic letters, new foliage and enrichment items and a new campaign, where a conservation centre for Mediterranean species is built in ancient ruins - they are listed, and cannot be destroyed or moved in any way.

Apennine chamois - Grassland-Temperate-Tundra, Vulnerable (kept in 2 European collections)
Egyptian goose - Aquatic-Grassland-Tropical-Desert-Temperate, Least Concern (kept in 167 European collections)

Striped hyena - Desert-Grassland-Temperate-Tropical, Near Threatened (kept in 37 European collections)

Leopard snake - Grassland-Desert-Temperate, Least Concern (kept in 11 European collections)

Nightlife Pack
This pack is reserved for smaller nocturnal animals that can nonetheless be kept in outdoor enclosures - all of these animals will have small enclosure requirements so they may be kept indoors; there is also a building set for nocturnal houses, some new foliage and new enrichment items.

Goodfellow's tree kangaroo - Tropical, Endangered (kept in 11 European collections)
Owston's civet - Tropical-Temperate, Endangered (kept in 5 European collections)
Southern springhare - Grassland-Desert, Least Concern (kept in 5 European collections)
Yellow armadillo - Grassland-Tropical, Least Concern (kept in 62 European collections)

Coconut crab - Tropical, Data Deficient (kept in at least 3 European collections)

Bird Garden Pack
This pack contains four non-flying habitat birds, a building set that allows players to create mesh or wire roofs for enclosures (useful for birds, primates and cats, among other animals) as well as the standard new foliage and enrichment items.

European white stork - Temperate-Grassland-Tropical, Least Concern (kept in 459 European collections)
Giant wood rail - Tropical-Aquatic-Grassland, Least Concern (kept in 49 European collections)
Southern ground hornbill - Grassland, Vulnerable (kept in 92 European collections)
Victoria crowned pigeon - Tropical, Near Threatened (kept in 79 European collections)

Endangered Animals Pack
The last pack has a building set of traditional 'functional' zoo fencing, new enrichment, a selection of critically endangered plant species and a new campaign, to build on a fairly small footprint a successful zoo only housing species with a threat status of Endangered or higher.

Coquerel's sifaka - Tropical-Temperate, Endangered (kept in at least 13 American collections)
Iberian lynx - Temperate-Grassland, Endangered (kept in 4 European collections)
Northern helmeted curassow - Tropical, Endangered (kept in 56 European collections)
Przewalski's horse - Grassland-Desert-Tundra, Endangered (kept in 100 European collections)

Desertas wolf spider - Desert, Critically Endangered (kept in 11 European collections)

Awesome ideas everyone.

Just to clarify, when I said to exclude birds, I more meant flying birds, such as parrots and corvids - ground birds that would unquestionably be habitat animals such as ratites or pheasants would be totally fine to include. As for marine animals, I think the biggest hindrance is that a) we don't know whether they'll ever implement underwater swimming, which of course makes the inclusion of such animals rather redundant, and b) it always opens up a debate I don't think is necessary for this thread (such as when people want to include orca, other dolphins, aquaria, that kind of thing).

Also, in case anyone was wondering, I'm still working on my list. I thought I had it, but then you all raised some very good points and now I'm changing it around. 😅

God i wish you were false with only 3 years of game support.

Roadrunner (I hope you mean only no flying Birds and not all Birds at all because that would be a stupid limitation)
If you mean no Birds at all, I would include the American Black Bear instead

Some kind of Cave Cricket as Effect (maybe Exhibit-Animal too) because I would really like to have them in the Mine in the North American Area of my Zoo

Monarch Butterfly as Effect (because as far as I know it isn't possible to keep adult Butterflys in a Terrarium)

If I can add 2 Exhibit-Animals more, I would add 2 aquatic Animals (just place them in a normal Exhibit but it will automatically get filled with Water)
Astyanax jordani (with underwater Cave Tank-Theme)
Axolotl (with Lake Tank-Theme)

(I do currently not have any Idea for a Building Set so I will add it later)

Borneo Pack
Proboscis monkey
Bornean white-bearded gibbon (if there are any of them in Zoos)
Borneo Banteng
Either Bornean bearded pig or Clouded leopard (I can't decide which one of those Animals would be better in the Game)

Earless monitor lizard (Exhibit Animal)

Durian Tree

Underground DLC
Naked Mole Rat (Formicarium Animal)
Some kind of Leafcutter Ant (Formicarium Animal)

Right, so, the whole point of me excluding marine animals was because there's no sense in assuming that Frontier will go down that road. The only thing we know for sure at this point is that we will continue to get terrestrial animals like those in the Arctic and South America packs. This exercise is mostly to determine what people would be happy with in that context. If they do wind up making some kind of aquarium DLC similar to what you've outlined, then great, but with the information we have at hand I don't think it's worth outlining that kind of content here.

Good effort, though, it's nice to see you've put more thought into it than just throwing down a random list of fish and what not like we often see.

Pretty sure I messed up with placing some animals in some categories :D
Didn't check if all these species are in zoos / could be in zoos.

Marine/birds excluded.
After year 1 I think they should release only building pieces - packs
So I didn't include them anymore. So when there are no building pieces, 1 extra exhibit animal.

Europe:
Badger
Wolverine
Saiga Antelope
Lynx

Exhibit species: European yellow-tailed scorpion

Until they eventually introduce flying and aquatic animals I'd be fine with this roster.

Believe it or not, it was actually hard finding enough animals. I didn't want overy specific ones, but ones that I often see in zoos. I also made sure that there are some "reskins" among them, because, lets face it, it saves Frontier work and they will do it.
I included mammals that live near the see, as , well, they aren't technically marine animals.

I also went away from the continent theme mostly, as I think it won't bring us as much variety as narrowing topics down from time to time.

Exhibit: Quoll
Which kind of Quoll do you mean? I think some of them would be too big for the Exhibits that are currently in the Game (I really hope for bigger ones in the future)

Exhibit: Anaconda (Larger Exhibit needed)
There already is a Anaconda in the Game, but I would also like a bigger Species of Anaconda
  • Moose
  • Elk
  • Fallow Deer
  • Wapiti
I'm not completely sure, but I think Elk and Wapiti are Synonyms
Edit: just checked it. They are the same Animal which means, you could add another Species 😉

There are some Animals I would really like in the Game in your Pack-Ideas.
🤔 I think Manatees could already work in the Game (not perfect but relatively good. We would need a Animation for them to swim to the Surface to breathe) . I think they move a lot along the Ground and the Hippos already do this
