General / Off-Topic God Save The Queen - Rousing speech from Her Majesty

For anyone who missed Her Majesty's broadcast, here is a transcript:

"My husband & I share your concerns & suffering in these unprecedented & difficult times - we can completely relate to those single mother nurses & low-paid zero-hours contract workers who are running out of money because I've also seen my assets decrease in value to a pitiful 1.6 billion pounds; self-isolation, social distancing & staying indoors has hit my household hard too - we only have 775 rooms in my house & the garden isn't quite as big as Hyde Park. Additionally, I'm down to my last eight servants; they are dispensable to us...oops, amusing Freudian-slip, there...I meant indispensable, of course!

Ultimately, this virus does not discriminate on the basis of class, wealth, ethnicity, accent, age or sex (unlike the extant UK establishment) - remember, we are all in this together - but in my favour, I do have instant access to my own personal ventilator, ICU & top-notch doctors under a system that patently prioritises my family above all of you plebs...& all because of the genetic lottery & the fact that my ancestors were more ruthless & violent than yours!

On behalf of the monarchy & country, I thank you all for your continued solidarity & stoicism - & my annual £50m payment from your taxes, of course - my embarrassingly credulous & acquiescingly loyal subjects"

Elizabeth R

Inspirational stuff - anyone else so proud to be British today?

I have always been proud to be British. I am British, therefore I don't have much choice.

However: Just like all other nations, we have a share of a-holes. Many have a tendency to to rubbish things they have no, or little knowledge of.

As to the Queen of England. She did not ask for the job. A job that she has been doing for close to 70 years. A job that she is dedicated to and does remarkably well. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year and for so far, close to 70 years. Who else in the U.K can say that about their work history? Yes she gets the best food, best medical care and probably, the best of everything, money can buy, but so do the top 1% of asset holders, in the U.K. None of which, can say that they are as dedicated to their country, or people, as she has proved to be. She lives in the same house, that her parents did and is 'expected' to do her duty. because she 'is' the Queen. Our Queen, so show some respect.

You want to slag someone off. Try Elton John, who crawls out every time there is a national disaster, to make a profit. Or Mike Ashley. Tim Martin. Gordon Ramsay. Or the Banks, profiteering. Or maybe even the 1,000s or idiots, stripping the shelves, or spreading this virus.

What HRH said, was worth listening too and I doubt, if you took the time to do so.

Here is Elizabeth II's address to the nation in full:
"I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time.

"A time of disruption in the life of our country: a disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many, and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all.

"I want to thank everyone on the NHS front line, as well as care workers and those carrying out essential roles, who selflessly continue their day-to-day duties outside the home in support of us all.

"I am sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times.

"I also want to thank those of you who are staying at home, thereby helping to protect the vulnerable and sparing many families the pain already felt by those who have lost loved ones.

"Together we are tackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it.

"I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge.

"And those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any.

"That the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humoured resolve and of fellow-feeling still characterise this country.

"The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.

"The moments when the United Kingdom has come together to applaud its care and essential workers will be remembered as an expression of our national spirit; and its symbol will be the rainbows drawn by children.

"Across the Commonwealth and around the world, we have seen heart-warming stories of people coming together to help others, be it through delivering food parcels and medicines, checking on neighbours, or converting businesses to help the relief effort.

"And though self-isolating may at times be hard, many people of all faiths, and of none, are discovering that it presents an opportunity to slow down, pause and reflect, in prayer or meditation.

"It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister. We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety.

"Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones.

"But now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do.

"While we have faced challenges before, this one is different.

"This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal.

"We will succeed - and that success will belong to every one of us.

"We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.

"But for now, I send my thanks and warmest good wishes to you all."

Not so, when you are the job.

The Queen speaks from long experience and rarely, and at least 24 million listened.
I don't understand what you're saying.

I was just saying (seriously joking) that it is not possible to work 24/24 - 7/7 - 365/365

Everyone sleeps, eats, rests, watches TV, takes vacations ... even the Queen.

:)

But while she sleeps, eats, rests, watches TV, takes vacations holidays she's still the Queen, always on.

That's why you couldn't get me to do the job, or Harry either.

It would appear that I've misjudged the monarchist sensibilities & predisposition on this forum. Hence, I shall leave this place forthwith with head bowed.

You've won this time, Your Majesty! But Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine & I will return!

Arry, cast off your dogmatic & indoctrinated shackles...& emancipate thyself!

Suffice to say a country is only a genuine democracy when society is wholly based on egalitarianism, not a class hierarchy derived from an anachronistic feudal system. The Queen serves no purpose except as an impotent figurehead; I have nothing against her personally - apart from contributing to the £400m refurb on Buckingham Palace a couple of years ago - but we as a people can only grow to anything like our true height if we discard this obsequious & acquiescent mentality.

EDIT: I forgot to add "BOOM!"

I'm a godless lefty commie b*stard and I was impressed, not so much the likes of Gordon Ramsay, decamping hisself down here to cornwal lhaving sacked all his staff, against many many people's direct advice....and then having the gall to broadcast Ramsay Podcasts from one of his vile mansions. I'm keeping all my staff on. well, the two Saturday lasses! Well done Madge, good speech and galvanised even those of us who are Republicans at head if not heart.

Being a parent, is also a full time job. Most of the planet's population manage to do that, (not me, no kids lol) so it 'is' possible.

I love the way, 'the people' grip about having to help pay to refurbish Buck House, for £400 million and shout about how we don't need to do such things, in this democratic land of our. At the same time, there is not a peep, about the £4 billion and rising bill, to do the same to Westminster.

Not going into politics etc., that same building, the one with the big clock, cost more than £400 million, to run etc., each and every year. So much for the democratic system.

In all fairness, I would point out that it's the Palace of Westminster, so perhaps not the best example :)

And after all, this is a British democracy!

Yes well, it's not a slave life either.

When we see the high dignitaries in all the countries, they cling to their golden place.

That means the soup is good.

I don’t care about equality and liberty, let battle and politics lie, let’s be together for once.
I am beginning to wonder. What comes afterwards?
Changes have been made, just look at 'the need' to travel?
Or:
Until there is a viable vaccine for the old, society is going to have to re-think, how to take care of the old. I would say that Japan, could become the best example of this. Family and the older generation, are very important there. I would say that there is a whole new industry there, because the old, will have to remain quarantined, for the remainder of their lives. Therefore, every aspect of their lives, would have to be provided for.
