Newcomer / Intro Eyeing Up A Cutter

Yeah the cutter has shields, collision is not the issue.
i was trying to think of a way of describing the "inability" for the cutter to pivot around an asteroid to line up fissure shots.
Well, at least she has a decent weapon convergence. Unlike a T9 with her hardpoint "somewhere over there, 60 meters above you, to the right"

True.
With the range of mining lasers being so short you have to practically stick you nose up against the asteroid anyway. So convergence accuracy is "anywhere in front of me"

That IS somewhat frustrating to do, possible but frustrating. As long as you don't collide with asteroid. If asteroid gets rotational momentum it becomes very hard to do.

I just sold my big ships and went back to using a Python / Krait (and even Eagle). For mining, my Krait holds about as many LTDs as my attention span allows, and its jump range makes it trivial to deliver them. I've made my first billion credits mostly using that humble but faithful Krait, though a Python will do just as well I think.

On the other hand, I do love pirating Cutters, so go ahead and get one ;)

What is your spec for your Krait please? I like the thought of longer jumps when laden. Which Krait is it?

I ran a Krait MK2 for mining for quite a long time. nimble and reliable.
Just got tired of delivery runs every 100T or so.

As far as pirating the cutter. sure let me just send out my location beacon.. wait. you did say you are with the mining inspection agency right?

I don't have the Coriolis, but it's a lightweight (engineered for exploration) Phantom miner with 2 mining lasers, an asteroid buster, and an abrasion blaster (no defensive weapons). Small shields to protect against scrapes, a 3A refinery (more than enough for LTDs), plenty of limpets, etc. I have all the goodies for both core and laser mining, as I like to mix it up so not to get bored.

I keep a size 5 Guardian booster in the system next door that I can swap in place of a limpet controller if the best market is on the other side of the Bubble, but this is usually not an issue.

My mining Cutter has 9 collectors; 1 prospector; 512 cargo; 4A refinery, shield and scoop - can deplete an asteroid with 3x mining lasers running continuously (without depleting WEP).

I enjoy the Python for mining - but the Cutta's betta (in terms of capacity and speed). ;)
A Python can fit the same size distributor as the Cutter and therefore runs just as many lasers. Even at 7 collectors, I have no trouble for them to keep up with three lasers in a Python. The Python is more agile and wins in speed between asteroids. Which really is better depends on how long you are prepared to stay out and the current demands at the best-sell stations. For the Cutter to beat the Python you essentially need to stay out for long enough to fill the Cutter (ca 2.5 hours + sell time) and for demands to go up to at least 3000-4000 to not have too high bulk taxes.

Going up imperial ranks means doing a lot of missions for imperial factions. First two or three ranks are a matter of a day of two, but the rest - well, even if you're stacking up a lot of easy missions, it's gonna take time.
It took me a couple of days to go from nothing to duke last fall by running courier missions between Mainani and Ngalinn. (I also went to work and slept those days.)

Mine in the middle hotspot in Borann A2 this evening (EST), in Open of course, and I'll be happy to show you how easily the might Cutter falls :D

Like it's been said, it's up to you if you want a Cutter. What we think shouldn't play much of a role. If you think you'd like it and use it, then get it.

Personally I think a newer player would be better served by spending all that money and engineering on a fleet of smaller ships tailored to specific roles. But that's why I said our opinions shouldn't matter much. What works for me won't for the next commander and so on and so on. New players want to beeline for the end-game ships and while I get it, I think it misses a big part of what makes progression through the game compelling and rewarding.

I've played for a few years and have plenty of money, but only ten ships, two of which are Krait IIs. Again, my thing ain't your thing, but I think taking a different path could be a good thing too.

About Krait miners.... I spent last week mining. Core mining, yeah, but that's the sort of mining I like. I bought a second Krait II and configured it to be a dedicated miner. Someone asked for a build and here's what mine looks like

Twin Reverb

With current LTD pricing, this build will net around 120 million per load. Some folks like to go much bigger. Others have less patience to spend the time necessary to fill several hundred tons of cargo space. The Krait is good for those of us who are ready to turn it all in after 100 tons.

I have no delusions you could punch a hole through my Cutters current build. Outfitted with mining equipment i don't have much in the way of offense.
Now if i could get one of those seismic charges to work on a ship like it does with an asteroid thats different.
But sadly right now its far less impressive.
(fires a seismic charge a the pirate) "Ha take that pirate!" (The charge harmlessly bounces off the ships hull) "well frack. ok once second let me abandon my cargo"

I do this too for my Python, but also stock a class 5A fuel scoop at the same base (Thomson Orbital).

@Hawknerd Unlocking the fsd booster is a very good idea if you have not already done it.

Yeah, I mean if you grind non-stop for a week it's probably doable, but personally I am trying to not undergo ordeals that would have me buying a month-long vacation on Bahamas just to heal the mental scarring.

I'd dance naked in the street if it collector limpets gathered active mines and brought them back to the ship stealing my cargo, causing them to detonate as the limpets approach the pirate. Best defense ever!

Do you hear me, Frontier? MAKE MINES GREAT AGAIN!

OMG why is this not a thing.

You only want it for mining? Given the commodity prices (per ton) you are doing fine with the Python.

Don't underestimate the grind to get a Cutter. And you need about 300-500 milj to build a decent one. But let me take a guess.. You want a fleet carrier?

The cash isn't really an issue since two Pythons full of LTDs will buy you a decent cutter. I sold my old mining Anaconda yesterday and replaced it with a cutter - Fully spec'd for mining it cost me around 500m with LYR discounts - if I were to fill it with LTDs (which isn't specifically why I bought it) it would pay for itself literally in one trip. 512 cargo capacity.

What are you talking about? I am perfecty fine ... except the occational nerd rage, nervous jitters, diarrhea, vomiting, dandruff, green skin, and general male pattern baldness. But other than that, I am perfectly fine ... :p
