So I caved in and got a HP Reverb

So I bit the bullet today since we got some stimulus money and bought the HP Reverb. I had been trying to get the Rift S for months(since January), but that one is always out of stock. So I started pricing and researching and the Reverb Pro looks like a good headset for only $217 more(it was $617 at Newegg). The resolution looks great, and I did some research on the controllers which seems to be the main complaint, and most people that actually own it say the controllers work fine. I will mostly be using it to play Elite, and other sims anyways(racing games). Though my son will want beat saber and the like, and I may get Half Life Alyx at some point.

Unfortunately the shipping says I wont get it until next Friday, so it will be a bit. While I wait I wanted to talk about it a bit. My main concern is if my hardware can run it alright, but I think it should be fine. If anyone has some insight or personal experience please let me know! I can't wait to try ED in VR. I already have a HOTAS to use with it :D.

I have a Ryzen 7 3700x, 16gb DDR4 RAM, and a 2070 Super.

Welcome to the Reverb club :)
Do not worry about controllers, they works perfectly fine. In HL alyx i can throw bottles or other crap from the behind (outside reverb camera) without the issues.

You bought the best headset you able to.

Thanks for the reassurance :D. It was a bit expensive, especially since I have never even tried VR before. Newegg has a 30 day return guarantee though if I don't like it, and so I figured why not. My son says VR is awesome, but I don't have to much interest in the games he wants to play. I figured ED would be awesome though.

I don't have the HP Reverb, but those system specs looks fine. Should have no problem playing Elite with the Reverb on that. Enjoy!

Welcome to the club, buddy. clap
Congrats.

But do u think 2070 gonna be enough to power down hi-res reverb? I have similar setup, except ryzen (i have 9700kf), and as i mentioned in previous topic - im struggling to get rift s to show something more than a blurry unreadable mess, unless ASW kick in, which i suppose HP did not have. And rift s, of course, has noticeably lower resolution to handle

The higher resolution will be harder to push but you will still be fine, just possibly at slightly lower in game settings. For the most part Elite is easy to run but it can get tough in asteroid fields, especially if you go core mining.

higher resolution is definately one of the most important HMD spec of for elite.

I'm actually excited for you MaGicBush :) .....and don't worry your system will run it fine!!

I came back to ED after using first an Oculus Rift (blurry) then Lenovo Explorer (better, very nice) and now HP Reverb (outstanding!)

I have a 4790k, 32GB ram and a 1080 (not TI) and ED looks incredible, even if you are forced to lower some things slightly (I'm not overly precious about the odd stutter and have quite robust 'VR legs')

Enjoy, you'll be amazed!

For anyone worried bout high resolution.
Its working better than on 1440p headsets because you do not need to use supersampling so much to receive in overall better effect.
So finally on Reverb you will have better performane than on low-resolution HMD's.

Trying to find a video capture tool to show what WMR in ED looks like but it looks like all the tools out there only capture the mirror component and ignore WMR

Welcome to the club, best decision I've made. Just so damn clear inside the Reverb, you are in for a treat.

I decided to stick with a 1080TI, most things are on ultra, I did set quality to medium in the mix reality settings, that made everything super smooth, I even set AA to FXAA since the visual quality is so amazing.

Also there is a nice virtual desktop on the ship with an optional dark mode through steam, perfect.

My only annoyance is the timeout, the reverb will close Elite if you step away for more than 15 mins, there is a reg fix to change the timeout, I couldn't get it working though. Also steam is a pile steaming ....... but it works 90% of the time.

Enjoy!

I have exactly the same cpu and ram with a 1080ti like 777 above. Like him most settings are on Ultra, but I've turned DoF, Blur and AA off, set the resolution in SteamVR to be the same as the headset and HMD and SS at 1 in ED itself.
Reprojection kicks in sometimes but I'm happy with WMR doing that, I think it's a good implementation.

Ahh thanks 777Driver.....never noticed this! Where do I find it?

Use one of the sticks, press the windows button on the stick, you'll see a bunch of stuff including the lighthouse (handy if you want to see your room without taking) off the headset.

Bottom far left icon is blank, that takes you to the desktop option, click on the icon, you'll get a wrap around display on the bridge of the ship, similar to the star port services screen, except it's your PC desktop, you also have a keyboard etc.

For bonus points, can you tell me how to make the desktop bigger than the display resolution of my monitor? My monitor is only 1080p so the VR Desktop will not scale beyond this.

Thank you very much 777Driver! I'll have to try this :)

I have a question about about the Reverb. Do you need steam? I don't use steam to play ED. Also how are the blacks? and any screen door effect? Ive been waiting for the Rift S but Im giving up on it.
