Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Yeah, MFS is my most anticipated game this year.

I'm not sure why Elite's Fleet Carriers disappointed me so much, its very likely I won't be bothering with Elite much towards the end of this year anyway due to MFS.

Isn't the consensus that it won't make it until the end of the year?

Elite: I reinstalled it after a year to take part of Drew's lore tour, which awesome by the way, and currently enjoying the game for what it is. I came to terms that I don't have any expectations from Elite anymore and it gave me a peace of mind to enjoy what is still a unique experience. Actually my only expectation from Elite to stay as is including VR support.

You have just discovered the secret recipe to enjoy just about any game (or any activity, really). Play to enjoy what there is, not to anticipate what there could.

It really works with everything.

I'm NOT disappointed for this and other reasons. I'm more disappointed that MFS won't have VR support out-of-the-box. I'm also very much looking forward to Starbase, which is like Space Engineers MMO.

As for Elite, VR is the main reason I play these days, and the best VR experiences can be found in small ships like the Eagle, not the menu-heavy fleet carrier. That said, I am HAPPY that fleet carriers are coming (despite my lack of interest in them), because it's driving players to Borann. Hunting for players to pirate down in the beautiful rings of Borann A2 is very enjoyable in VR :D

In general, that really works. But the thing with Elite, that there is no other game like it around the corner, this is why it is a tough pill to swallow that we are stuck with it as is.

I wouldn't play Elite without VR either, but I'm pretty sure FS will get VR soon enough, if nothing else a simple headtrack version as post-release beta.
Plus, I expect a tough learning curve, and it probably helps at the beginning to be able to alt+tab easily for instructions.

I don't know - I found a lot of flight sims pretty tedious. The problem with civil sims is often that - almost literally - nothing happens. Plus they can take a very long time to learn. I was very big on them back in the day (back when G'N'R were in the charts!) on the Amiga, but I haven't really bothered with them on PC. Much as I haven't bothered with Chinese Democracy..... I remember they ("They" Flight Sims, not "They" Axl and Co) went through this tedious phase of (apparent) hyper realism which meant you were spending 30 minutes before each flight preflighting the aircraft and warming up the engines. What made it even more tedious is that often they required massive collections of key combinations that needed to be memorised in order to turn on the carb heat as opposed to extending the flaps by 20 degrees. I hope that there are sensible ones in this and much of it can be done by looking at controls (it's easier to recall where the is than whether it's ALT-SHIFT-P or ALT-SHIFT-Q to turn on the landing lights!). I like the control methods in E:D and hopefully some of that will get into this SIM and stop it turning into a massive airborne memory test. Airliners don't interest me much, but I'd love to fly a piper cub or other lightweight over my house one day or practice short-field landing in the sports-field around the corner.

one area of concern is how good the game looks. Hopefully this does not mean it'll require silly hardware to run it. I think I might be tempted to pick this one up and see if I can rekindle my love of flight sims. I loved Flight Simulation on the spectrum, Falcon 2.0 on the Amiga, Interceptor on the Amiga and so many others. I think the last one I bought was probably MS Flight Simulator 2000 and I didn't have a flight stick so I hardly played it at the time.

Ridiculous, innit? What I found was helping is the clickable cockpits, like in DCS. Is more easy to remember "Flip dem switches on dis panel then dose on dat panel!" for startups than "ctrl-alt-shift-^" clears altimeter rotarition magneton and stuff like that. 1st rule of blissful sim player is also to not care about lights. Except backlites. I need to see dem needles. Except for der RPM and moter needles. Who needs needles for der moter when we have ear?!

I'm going to play this to smithereens when it releases. The hard part is picking where to fly first, with a freaking entire 3d real planet earth.

The only flying game that could compete with FS2020 for my attention would be this: https://store.steampowered.com/app/771800/Deadstick__Bush_Flight_Simulator/

I love the making a living on a small plane, flying by eye, doing jobs in the backwater... Unfortunately development has been very slow and I'm starting to think it will be yet another early access that never actually releases.

Given that X-Plane 11 already has 3D fully interactive cockpits for years now, I'm pretty certain FS2020 will have them too.

No more learning keybinds! The essentials are always the same for flight sims, anyway. And startup procedures don't vary much - principle is always the same. Battery - fuel system - aux power - engine start (simplified).

How does that work in VR?
Can you operate them by targeting/looking at them, then just pressing a button?

The way DCS was set up with touch controls is immerisve, but not very practical.

Quite surprised my rig meets the recommended (not the ideal) specs without any upgrades. As for bandwith, I could have several people playing this game in my house at the same time. If there's anything good in Portugal is the internet, we have high speed fiber pretty much everywhere.

Quite so. My PC meets the ideal, my Internet not so much. Oh well...
Bandwidth requirements I presume are for the full monty of real time local actual weather, actual aircraft and any and all terrain you have not pre-downloaded I presume (I may be wrong but I recall you could download areas?). In terms of "world" it should not be an issue as long as you have pre-dowmload the areas you plan to fly in your next session etc, so unless I have missed something the high bandwidth is for real time stuff only no?

Yes according to MS, the largest bandwitth requirements are for live streaming the terrain at full detail.

You shouldn't need it (a very large bandwith) for live traffic or live weather.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Looks like I'm doing pretty well as far as system specs go. I could upgrade to 32 gigs, but otherwise I'm well within the recommended to ideal range.

This is great, now I can finally plan my new PC build. The specs are lower than I expected, but the bandwidth is more than my current ISP can provide.

Come on Elon Musk, let me buy Starlink already! TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!!!
