RAM - 16 vs 32 GB

Seeing this post I checked my PC memory. ED in ultra mode 3440x1440, Google Chrome running 3rd party support sites plus this Forum and added a YouTube ED Yamiiks training video. That is 11Mb of PC memory. I've never seen ED approach using 16Mb of PC memory. The problem with ED is that it is all about the graphics card. Not all that easy to upgrade on a laptop.

I'm currently running 64Gb of Corsair DDR4 upgraded from 48Gb...which was upgraded from the initial 16Gb I built the system on. I'm now all SSD (1x 1TB Crucial MX500 M.2 / 2x 2TB Crucial MX500 SATA) as well with a 2TB hybrid and a rather old 60Gb SATA SSD a bit like the one Asp has for backups and downloads etc.

It's been a fairly nice little SSD over the years, and it currently lives in the most rubbish of my rubbish machines. Write speed has dropped drastically, but that's mostly because Windows insists on "upgrading" the AMD chipset drivers to completely inappropriate ones, and on such a weak rig I've given up trying to fix it. It's only there to share an optical drive, SD card and charge the gopro anyway :D

As far as RAM goes - my 4Gb i5 Air really seems to struggle these days with web content. My 2Gb Linux and Windows Atom / Celeron machines are basically doorstops. 16Gb box developed a bad stick and dropped to 12, but it's so weak anyway that doesn't make a difference. 32Gb i5 still reasonably capable, but has retired as a production machine. 128Gb i7 is the daily driver and still copes quite well - but that's only used for games and VM fun. Latest production machine, well, it's specs don't matter, as it'll never see a game until it's retired :D

Currently living in 8bit land where 64k is max addressable on c64 . Graphics memory took up majority.
Before any says Im nut check out Mistress of minion s latest game 'release'

Its a real art and skill to be able to code to to those limits again remember where Elite started.

Not a single game uses even 16Gb atm. You can always think far in the future, but if you use your PC for games, not worth it.

My new Ryzen 3900X SFF system has 64GiB of memory, but gaming on it will have to wait as I took back the video card I was going to use in it back.

Hoping for RDNA2 or Ampere parts in early Q4.

Haven't been paying too much attention to the new MS Flight Simulator, but it should probably be on emy shortlist if I can get it through a distribution platform I don't despise.

OT, but I'm afraid it will be Microsoft Store only, like their version of Minecraft... I'll probably bite the bullet and get it anyway, but I'm not happy about tying my laptop to my real identity. I've been happily using this laptop since September without logging into my MS account. I don't trust Windows 10 telemetry. Heck, I don't trust anybody, LOL :p

Windows Store only is a deal breaker for me...my Windows Server systems can't even use the Windows Store app and there is no way I'm making a Microsoft Account on my Windows 10 ones.

It is a deal breaker to me as well as long as it's not the MS Flight Sim. That is the only game on the horizon that has my full interest, so I'll have to bite the bullett it seems.

On topic of RAM: isn't DDR5 expected to come this year? I am planning to buy a completely new system by Autumn 2021, and sort of hoping that I can really take a generational leap over the current one (which will, hopefully, serve my daughters well once they go to school next year).

I can't get away with less than 32 in my laptop, but I tend to have a lot of memory-intensive stuff open simultaneously. I'll often have 3 different MMORPGs logged in simultaneously, alt-tabbing between them. Sometimes, say, running OBS to capture both monitors while making direct comparisons.

DDR5 is sampling now, which means it will be in some specialized platforms by the end of the year, but you won't be able to put it in a new PC until the second half of 2021, in all probability. Autumn 2021 sounds like a good time to build a new generation of system.

I just have 400 to 700 (not hyperbole) tabs open at any given time...

...My alternative is to move all my games to a second hard drive...
I cannot speak for larger/newer games as my main ones are Elite Dangerous, X4 Foundations, No Man's Sky and X-Plane 11. With a great 8Gb graphics card and 48Gb of RAM I've never used more than 16Gb on any of them. Using Adobe audio/video products especially HD videos required the additional memory.

I use two 480Gb SSDs with one for the OS/programs and the other for games. Then add standard hard drives for data storage. Plenty of space plus two backups to a standard hard drive. Backup the OS regularly and games only as needed when adding new ones etc.

The last system I had 16MB of memory on was my old Pentium 166, my first Win95 system.
