News Community Update (01/05)

These times are hard for everyone. The only thing reasonable people can do about it is to look out for each other's health and safety first and foremost, and accept gracefully that we just can't have everything we want exactly when we wanted it during the middle of a world-altering pandemic.

Thanks to everyone at Frontier for all the work you're doing, I understand how frustrating it must be to have to deal with a whole new mandatory style of work you're not accustomed to. Hopefully the adaptation doesn't take you all too many months.

On the bright side, after you adapt to this disabled people working from home should be logistically much easier. If any employees are after tips on working from home and organising things on time, Ars Technica is doing a great series on it based on their own experience of being a completely work from home workplace.

I also just wanted to say how much I appreciate Frontier offering to try and keep the news schedule relatively unaffected. That's something you didn't have to do but which nevertheless is deeply appreciated by me and no doubt many other players. We can do without the update for a few extra months, and with some juicy deets we'll just have plenty to pore over while we wait.

Thanks everyone,
o7

A bit concerned that you need to advise that following 6 weeks of working from home, you have been forced to publish a slip for a delivery that is 7 months away.
Concerned that you are so tight with your project planning this far out that you were forced to call out the slippage now.

it’ll be what it’ll be.

Hang on, since me and my colleges have been working from home productivity has been through the roof. Without the encumbrance of commuting and needless in-office discussions our company has 'seen the future' and are moving to making working from home the norm. I'd take a long hard look at anyone who works sedentary, but isn't 'producing' during this this COVID-19 pandemic... 🧐
Seriously FDev, give the workers the equipment and support to work from home and you'll see the rewards!
That can't easily be used in case of NDA protected material. Not everyone can work isolated at home without hearing "wow, dad, is this a new ship??!?!?". And the workstations, I don't think you can easily move them at home. Not to mention electricity bills, and other minor inconveniences.

Ahhhhh, make games using computers!?!? That type of work can be done from home with the right support (equipment), right access to servers, but I must admit it would be limited by the internet and company security policies. With just a little enginuity, much can be achieved working from home...
You have not the remotest idea of how video games are made, cooperative computer programs of a certain size.

Your words reflect your own ignorance.

Greetings Will,

thanks for info, however it is not a good news. Delay to the big update release is understandable, but it also means that current "frozen" state of the game, with numerous suspended/removed activities, will lasting much longer. ED is now running with just basic functions, no lore, no CGs and just static galaxy (big scale). I would not mind if you do release in 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2021 .. IF there would be game working like it was year ago.

Disappointing but not surprising due to the crumby situation out there. I just wish some of my project stakeholders could see some flipping sense </work rant>

I do hope Frontier recognises that the community needs something in the interim; whether that is the return of simple CGs (no need to link to IIs), anything on Galnet or (and this is a complete pipedream) a return to the Kickstarter style of titbits being dropped in newsletters, whether concept art, WIP meshes or whatever.

In piece the parade of cries for the delay ... to see how many bags of popcorn and laughter I find today, at the moment they are presenting

Security, and support are issues.

They do have a future... :)
They are a quick'n'dirty way to make money from what is effectively just FMCG, not that there is anything amiss with that as the market is massive and isn't likely to shrink any time soon.

It was only the wording of the criticism by the poster that appeared to indicate that the games being developed were not PC games :)

There are lots of reasons why your statement is so wrong! Your productivity might well have improved, but what about those with kids or other circumstances that make it very difficult to work from home?! They have to juggle a lot of different issues which mean that they cannot work as efficiently at their job. What about those whose internet connection is not as good as they would like, but are now stuck with it?
