News Community Update (01/05)

Greetings Commanders,

Today, we wanted to share an update with you all regarding the on-going development of Elite Dangerous.

Despite transitioning as a company to work from home during these challenging times, we're still committed to providing the best possible support, development and updates for the game and for our community. We've launched the first Fleet Carriers beta and are now busy working on the second installment coming in May. This second beta will be opening its hangars not only to PC Commanders, but also those on console for the first time! Everything is still on track to bring Fleet Carriers to the live servers in June.

However, during this uncertain period, we've also had to re-examine our longer term roadmap and make some adjustments. To ensure that we can bring you an incredible new Elite Dangerous experience without compromising the team who work at Frontier, the Next Era release date will move slightly from December 2020 to early 2021.

We haven't made this shift lightly, but it has been made with both the team and the game's best interest at heart. We know that many of you are eager to hear more about the Next Era of Elite Dangerous and, despite this shift in release date, our schedule to bring you news and details about the future hasn't changed, so keep an eye on all of our channels for more information in the coming months!

Thank you everyone for your patience, understanding and generally being an awesome and passionate community!

Stay safe and keep supporting each other,

Ok, Had to happen I suppose. Thank you for letting us know. I appreciate that as a company, you have to make these decisions given the insanity going on in the world.
May I suggest, by way of compensation, Frontier, through you, actually reveal what this new era is?
You've kept us waiting a year and a half by this point, moral is already low and won't improve with this news. It doesn't have to go into great details, just a simple one line confirming what it is.
We could spend the next nine months up to Q1 2021 speculating about what we know is coming instead of ripping into each other about something we don't know.

Will .... Frontier .... Silence right now is going to do more harm than good.

The good thing about this news is that their news/trailer that they were going to announce in the summer (more or less) has not changed, if you see it like me, it is better to know little in the next 3-5 months than to know nothing in 10 months (I include Q1 of 2021)

Ahhhhh, make games using computers!?!? That type of work can be done from home with the right support (equipment), right access to servers, but I must admit it would be limited by the internet and company security policies. With just a little enginuity, much can be achieved working from home...
As someone that works virtual and has for the last 10-15 years... it's not as easy as you think.

Disappointing but not surprising due to the crumby situation out there. I just wish some of my project stakeholders could see some flipping sense </work rant>

I do hope Frontier recognises that the community needs something in the interim; whether that is the return of simple CGs (no need to link to IIs), anything on Galnet or (and this is a complete pipedream) a return to the Kickstarter style of titbits being dropped in newsletters, whether concept art, WIP meshes or whatever.
I was just about to say something similar - while I’m not surprised or disappointed (well, maybe a little bit) by the release delay, I wouldn’t have liked the content reveals being shifted right also.

+1 for a return of the Dev Sneak Peek!

It is what it is.
Sad but expected. I hope for the first news in July; Maybe dev diaries, teasers, Livestreams, behind the scenes, focused beta tests and more programs. Good luck.
To be honest it has become incredibly difficult to keep the players believing in the game and its vision, for a while now. Groups leaders are doing everything they can to keep the community together, and personally I am now exhausted... I'm giving my all, as always. Tough times..

The delay is completely understandable. However...

This, absolutely this.

Even if there's no new in game additions, that would be so much easier to swallow if we'd actually get at least a bit of insight of what is being worked on. As it is now, the game feels more like abandonware with each passing day. (Don't even bring up fleet carriers, they're a colossal blunder that has me worried about fdev design philosophy in a way I haven't before, even with the announced changes).
So please, Frontier, consider giving us something to look forward to. The clandestine "we'll announce it when it's ready" PR strategy works when the progress on the game is obvious and constant, not when most of us haven't seen anything exciting in years.

Understandable and expected, but how about a small teaser about the Next Era at least? Why so much unnecessary suspense regarding the news about it? We will have more pieces of information in a months to come, I know, but come on... 30-second teaser is too much to ask for now?!

Delayed, called it months and months ago, I don't think it's the quarantine / working from home that has much to do with this, you have a repeating pattern, a track record of this
Frontier... I am not surprised, considering you delayed carriers twice, I'm sure you'll delay this "new era" more than once as well. All that money we generated for you, 78 million pounds from 2014-2018, add in 2019's earnings and you get oh, about 90-100 million pounds, well over 100 million dollars US, but with a great deal of that revenue spent on other IPs. Development slowed to a snail's pace long before this lockdown happened. You are hiring many positions in the studio on top of this. People can put it on the quarantine / lockdown, but I see a LOT more than that, a LOT more.

Thanks for the update. Totally understandable. :)

That's unfortunate. Even global pandemic won't make you spill the beans earlier... We can only hope it's worth the hype you're spinning around it. But if it's "exciting™" like multicrew and friends, then it would be an epic waste of our time. We're waiting for an expansion since 2016.
