News Community Update (01/05)

The community could certainly set up its own news feeds and community initiatives - some of it already has. Fleet Carriers will make it easier for the community to set up and track some CG-like activities in certain areas, as well.

But in terms of getting access to the official stuff, unfortunately the evidence of the last times those things were tried suggests that it actually puts more pressure on Frontier vetting, approving, translating and setting into the official Galnet and CG formats community contributions than it would take for them just to do it themselves.
Frontier is pretty locked down in this respect.

I suppose the issue here is going to be how carefully a CG or II needs to be considered. This is not a player base that embraces change or disruption to what their doing so they're going to have to consider the impact of any CG or Thargoid invasion. I imagine they won't want to deal with the salt explosion right now if Thargoids accidentally attack a station that a player group is using.
Good point. We should remove CG and Thargoids completely from the game forever, lest we upset some player group. 🤦

It’s understandable and I can accept it - as long as you don’t delay telling us about the new era (as you promised in post 1). That is long overdue already.

Although its bitterly disappointing, that pain is attenuated by:

A: FDev being sensible with social distancing, meaning there is a company thats not going to be struck by COVID and protecting is employees. Being irresponsible means worst case the whole of FDev is in hospital- i.e. we have nothing.

Also take into account the possibility of a second pandemic wave, FDev having time to change internal offices. I mean look at this:

FDev are going to need a lot of rethinking regards that shiny new building and open offices. Thats going to be a big upheaval.

B: It gives FDev time to really polish that Powerplay update. I mean so polished I can see my face in its brilliance. This was leaked earlier:

Fantastic!

C: It give me extra time to finish my Asp Lego.

D: We will still see what New Era is to the same schedule- just not be able to play it.
The company I was contracting at was planning on a big move in early April to new facilities. Now, no one is working at either of them. And, they are still paying for rent, utilities, etc.

Non-rational, but in my experience pride goeth before the fall. Buying a big shiny new building is often a bad sign.

True, but to give an example that has literally 5 minutes ago occured in my work, the coordination of all the efforts is made much more difficult because everyone is working in separate physical locations. So yesterday 5 people were busy for some hours investigating and coming up with a solution to a problem. They have communicated the problem, and their solution yesterday afternoon in an email. I've just told them that they are busy solving something that will not happen in the new situation we are working towards, and that the process needs to be adjusted, not a technical solution created.

So, not particularly efficient, and directly down to the current work environment.

that's just adaptation needed, work environment and even type of work has little impact in the age of cellphones. companies which already had good and effective communication have had no problem transitioning to remoting, companies that didn't simply will have to step up.

that remoting is more productive is a different story, it indeed can be since it enforces more focus and attention to detail (you can't just count on people being around full time to mop up) and reduces noise (avoid lots of time wasting stupid meetings). of course that requires seamless and accurate communication and good motivation.

software development has actually been doing remoting for a while now, it's a natural sector for that. but it's applicable to almost any job.

if by "work environment" you mean kids screaming, the cat jumping over the keyboard and grandma singing on the balcony then, yeah, that environment is indeed a factor :ROFLMAO:

Any time they have made a change there has been a barrage of complaints. IIs and CGs have always been done with minimal risk to players.

Is it right?- no.

Is it necessary to avoid any more complaints than they already get?- very likely. These will take time and effort to set up and I don't see them doing it as much as I would like to see them.

Greetings Commanders,

Today, we wanted to share an update with you all regarding the on-going development of Elite Dangerous.

Despite transitioning as a company to work from home during these challenging times, we're still committed to providing the best possible support, development and updates for the game and for our community. We've launched the first Fleet Carriers beta and are now busy working on the second installment coming in May. This second beta will be opening its hangars not only to PC Commanders, but also those on console for the first time! Everything is still on track to bring Fleet Carriers to the live servers in June.

However, during this uncertain period, we've also had to re-examine our longer term roadmap and make some adjustments. To ensure that we can bring you an incredible new Elite Dangerous experience without compromising the team who work at Frontier, the Next Era release date will move slightly from December 2020 to early 2021.

We haven't made this shift lightly, but it has been made with both the team and the game's best interest at heart. We know that many of you are eager to hear more about the Next Era of Elite Dangerous and, despite this shift in release date, our schedule to bring you news and details about the future hasn't changed, so keep an eye on all of our channels for more information in the coming months!

Thank you everyone for your patience, understanding and generally being an awesome and passionate community!

Stay safe and keep supporting each other,

o7
Thanks for the update Will.
It is clearly understandable seen the current situation. Health is first so please take care.
Between the FC and the New Era there's a big gap though. It would be good if we could see the Community Goals or the Interstellar Initiatives coming back in this period.
Thanks

If I can mod NMS to look and feel more like ED (black space, non-cartoon color pallet, etc.) I might be very tempted to replace ED with NMS until New Era drops. This isn't a rage quit or anything like that, it's just a space game fan who is desperate for new content, even if I have to have an "affair" with another game to get it.

I know it's a bit of off-topic thingy for this thread, but... I don't think you need to mod it. It's what NMS is at the core - a casual nice exploration game, and the flying parts are just transitions between levels. It won't be elite, playing dress up won't make it elite, playing pretend won't make it elite etc. Just enjoy it for what it is - setting foot on alien planets in VR and building awesome bases

"We had originally planned for the Elite Dangerous major update to release in December 2020, but, in the context of the current Covid-19 environment, we have now set a Q1 2021 release date."

Nothing to do with signing the new IP. No mention of the original 2017 date which then got moved to 2019 to then get moved to 2020 and now 2021.
