News Community Update (01/05)

I am a software developer, working from home during these events and I can tell you that it's not that easy.

Sure, if you're working on something that requires little to no collaboration, I can see how you might be as productive as being sat at your desk. Tell that to me though, who has two young children that aren't at school at the moment, one of which is severely autistic and needs 24/7 care. Tell that to me, who's wife is a front-line nurse helping to fight this thing - who comes home exhausted every day.

In between all the working from home I'm supposed to be doing, I'm home schooling the kids, keeping them safe and happy - cooking meals for all of us and keeping everything running at home and trying not to stress over the fact that I have a really inconveniently timed broken pipe, that's ruining the plaster in my hall and living room.
Sorry to hear. We've had a bunch of stupid issues like that too. Our air condition unit broke 2 weeks ago. Completely busted. Had to be replaced, and it's very expensive, and these guys have to come out with masks and gloves. (Btw, here in South California, where we live, you have to have an A/C. It gets really hot here, nowadays, and we're heading for another record heat wave this year). Anyway. Then a few days ago, I wanted to work on the garden and sprinkler system, and a valve blew. Complete shower. Full pressure from the main pipe, and only way to shut it off (I thought) was the main line to the house, but later learned there was a hidden separate valve I could close. But then, after fixing the pipe, seemed to be working fine, it blew again... glue probably didn't fix properly.

And regarding having a special needs kid, we have one too. He's paraplegic, had a surgery just before the lockdown, and is now in home care, but with some complications and he can't be in hospital...

Also, I also cook, bake, gardening, take care of my kid, now... plumbing. LOL!

Things just pile up. But we all have to just try our best to keep our sanity intact.

I can 100% assure you, that I am nowhere near as productive at home than I am at work.

But that's just me, and everyone has their own experience.

I want to thank Frontier for providing me with an awesome way to escape all that for a few hours before I go to bed; just wandering around out there on the rim of the galaxy, or parking my ship on an undiscovered moon somewhere while I watch an alien sun rise.

+1000.

And I hope you'll get some of the things fixed and done, and that things will get better.

Thank's Will for the information.

And below two essential points :

Encouragement to the entire courageous Frontier team.

Greetings Commanders,

Today, we wanted to share an update with you all regarding the on-going development of Elite Dangerous.

Despite transitioning as a company to work from home during these challenging times, we're still committed to providing the best possible support, development and updates for the game and for our community. We've launched the first Fleet Carriers beta and are now busy working on the second installment coming in May. This second beta will be opening its hangars not only to PC Commanders, but also those on console for the first time! Everything is still on track to bring Fleet Carriers to the live servers in June.

However, during this uncertain period, we've also had to re-examine our longer term roadmap and make some adjustments. To ensure that we can bring you an incredible new Elite Dangerous experience without compromising the team who work at Frontier, the Next Era release date will move slightly from December 2020 to early 2021.

We haven't made this shift lightly, but it has been made with both the team and the game's best interest at heart. We know that many of you are eager to hear more about the Next Era of Elite Dangerous and, despite this shift in release date, our schedule to bring you news and details about the future hasn't changed, so keep an eye on all of our channels for more information in the coming months!

Thank you everyone for your patience, understanding and generally being an awesome and passionate community!

Stay safe and keep supporting each other,

Thx for the news! Will be waiting :)

A shame, but understandable considering the situation.
Moreover, I for one prefer a delayed good thing than a rushed mess.

Speaking of mess, any news on what this "new era" actually includes would be great.
In particular I am interested to know if it includes predatory practices (e.g. unkeep etc..) well in advance.

Typically FD doesnt look more than one update ahead, so I'd assume we'll start hearing the first bits in July or August. Lavecon is scheduled for early July, and whatever form that will be this year might be a nice moment for a first sneak peek!

No worries here, I would much prefer everyone to come through this pandemic together, there will be time to celebrate together. On the grand scale of things although it’s your livelihoods, to some of us ,it’s just a game, or more importantly to most ,It’s being part of a great community , we have learned to be patient and we are very hopeful that this last 2.1/2 years of development will be very worth the wait.
Keep safe and healthy everyone

Thank you Frontier Developments and thank you Will Flanagan for all the hard work and determination that you bring to Elite Dangerous Galaxy every work day year after year. Looking forward to all updates and any news during these uncertain times wishing all at Frontier Developments a Safe and Prosperous road ahead. Stay Safe and o7

they say that every year

Its frustrating for everyone, from people who play the game to those who make the game, to get delays.
I was expecting a delay but hoping that delay would mean it only came out December of this year rather than what i was hoping for which was October of this year.

As things stand though i suspect it will launch end of January early February. That gives devs time to put final touches to things after the christmas break which hopefully we will be allowed to celebrate.

I also wonder if we may get a public beta sometime just before christmas to wet our appetite and pump up the pre sales.

Delays to Video games happen regularly, we should have been playing cyberpunk now but thats been moved to later in the year.
Numerous other games have put back their launches due to Covid 19, and Star Citizen is still in pre Alpha when it should have launched 2014.

The main thing, is to do whats right for the staff at Frontier to keep them safe. Dead devs dont make games.

On a brighter note, times of trouble have historically shown an upsurge in creativity for the human race as we strive to look for something to distract us from the daily misery we face. I therefore look forward to some great video games in the next few years and hopefully a resurgance in musical creativity.
