News Community Update (01/05)

The title could have been more information, perhaps

Community Update - new era delayed (01/05)
Yeah the could have done something like, I don't know, putting the information in the story.

Its only a problem for people who read the headline and decide they know the whole story, or worse, form their opinion after reading stories by the person who only read the headline.

Wish you could tell us when you'll reveal it, but delay understandable. Thanks.

EDIT: Okay, I see it's "summer"

That's just asinine. You can't say you read every thread - I only open a thread if the thread title shows some relevance to something that interests me. You look at the other thread titles in this sub-forum - this one is the only totally non-descriptive one.

While i get the current situation is causing a number of issues for programming houses, how is it some of them, in particular Ubisoft, can release the new version of Assasin's Creed without any issues whatsoever? Most of their staff are working from home, and yet they have the infrastructure in house to be able to co-ordinate their programming staff to still deliver top quality software. Surely this highlights excellent management on their end.

Yes Covid-19 is a nasty business, but that doesn't stop a lot of people getting on with their jobs. Yes i'm frustrated at yet more delays, but simply blaming it on the current situation is at least in my eyes, a bit of an excuse. There's plenty of ways of interacting with each other, video conferencing, code sharing etc. I'd love to know the real reason for the delays.

If you guys at FD want to know co-ordination, come and join me at the NHS which is where i work, and i'll show you how it's done.

I’m a software developer, and along with virtually all staff in the company, I’ve been working from home for the last couple of months.

There are challenges. Communication, collaboration, and co-existence of work and family at home. We use MS Teams heavily, and an in-house proprietary nightmare of a work scheduling application modelled on the Theory of Constraints. In the first couple of weeks we were informed that productivity had significantly dipped. Although it was written off as the adjustment period, it led to overcompensation from the leadership in the form of constant close monitoring and micro-management. A large part of my job now is just making my numbers look good so that management can present positive reports to our parent company. That has negatively impacted both my motivation and productivity.

I’m sure there are similar scenarios in other companies, as well as cases going to the other extreme in terms of handling by management. The point I’m trying to make is that the companies that manage to maintain the same output at the same quality will likely be the minority of exceptions, or will have likely already had common enough work from home situations to not have needed much adjustment, so there’s a case to be made for leniency in this instance.

It's almost like Ubisoft games were already made across several physical locations split apart by many, many miles...

Normally when Ubisoft makes its games it performs them independently by divisions, explanation: Ubisoft division Romania performs the Silent Hunter and Division Ubisoft France Anno, ...

And Assassin's Creed Valhalla has 15 studios on it.

Now I think it must be safe to say that those 15 studios are not in the same building, surely?

Even before the outbreak.

Okay, you might be right for some of their games. But here's the fact. Ubisoft already told us they have over a dozen companies on Valhalla. Probably a flex on their part but it still reinforces my point.

You can't compare Ubisoft to a single-studio dev' like Frontier.

Going by your own claim of having previously worked at Ubisoft, you of all people should know this.

Good I have only commented a first-hand information of my knowledge ... and that's it. Whether you like it or not, the current situation is the problem of many companies.

Edit: It doesn't reinforce anything ...15 Studios depends on what things .... designs alone ?, sound ?, script and plot? ......... but the final assembly is safe in one place and with a lot of work. I said in one of my first posts in this thread that "many people looking for firewood in the desert"

Dude. I know. I am not the one complaining about the delay. I am delighted Frontier have bitten the bullet and told the community exactly what they did not want to hear. It sucks but it's needed for the sake of the staff at FD and in extension their families. Video games can wait.

Why do you assume Ubisoft has/had no issues with AC Valhalla regarding COVID? The game was only announced three days ago - two months after lockdowns began.

Ubisoft aren't exactly going to say "This is our new upcoming Assassin's Creed, watch our trailer! Coming soon" followed the next day by "you saw our trailer for new AC? Sorry, we have to delay its release by a few months; we didn't know this yesterday."
