Newcomer / Intro Graphic Problems Stutter

Hi there!

You are the nth person with these stuttering problems on the forum, however one of the few from team red.

I'm also on team red and fixed my issue.

I'm running win10 on a ssd, rx 580x, xeon 1230v2 and I switched off one default setting in the drivers.

This settings interferes with the ingame surface mapping which is causing the freezes on my pc. Maybe it fixes your problem as well.

I admit I haven't read through the thread that thoroughly, so feel free to virtually slap me if you already described what I am proposing half a dozen posts earlier.
But: have you looked at the stats of both CPU and GPU (and the rest of your system) with a monitoring/recording tool (like hwinfo)?
Yes, from the symptoms you describe, it could be a memory leak, but it could also be the temperature of something slowly creeping up and throttling something.

I did a bit of RES bounty farming last night, which is the first for a couple of months. I was surprised to see the slight stuttering and low frame rate every time the battles got intense. I never noticed that before. My PC is an i7 with GTX 1080 and 4k monitor. I used to get it on my old PC with GTX750 and 1080p monitor until I upgraded two years ago. I think something must have changed recently to cause the problem.

Thanks for your screenshots. I tried to apply that, but the effect in the game degrading remains. I don't really think it is settings in the software, although they may have some effect. I stick with the fact that the game logic is not functioning well interfacing with the graphic card. It can be many things, but likely it comes down for the card to have to keep up with too many objects in the 3D space.

OT:
I tried other stuff. Disconnecting hardware and even stuck in my old card Radeon HD 6970. It ran bad and it reminded me of the reason to upgrade. But even there I could see the slow degradation of the graphics following the same pattern.

I hope the Devs at Frontier keep this in the back of their minds and have a look at the issue ...

@djwave - You should probably raise a ticket about this issue, and reference this thread. I'm going to have a go on my son's pc (not dissimilar to your rig, although it's got an RTX 2060 in it) and see if the issue persists there.

I probably should raise a ticket. I will have to look into that.
I much appreciate your testing. A 2060 should not have problems with the game like my 5700XT. I am curious to see what a team green card is resulting in. Although there is mention in the thread of a Green card showing similar issues.
I also noticed that the busier the RES is, the faster it starts to deteriorate.

best let Frontier know and hope the devs can figure this out. Let's fix the galaxy! :D

Yeah, I would have thought that too, but after 30-40minutes, the stuttering started and gradually got worse. Started off at a healthy 114fps, and eventually started occasionally dropping down to 30fps. Only in spikes, but enough to make you really notice. You could pretty much guarantee that if you moved to a different RES, it would all be fine at first, and you'd just go through the same degradation of performance. The only other thing I learned was that his setup looks waaaay better than my poor old system. Ah well.

Sorry to spoil you. So when will you upgrade?
Thanks for the help.

Thanks to all commanders!

Good luck. :)

Also one more thing - you could try turning off the Vsync and frame limiter in the game options. It's very inefficient (basically your GPU is going to run on 100% all the time, rendering as many frames as possible despite your monitor not being able to display them all), but it could give the game some breathing room.
You can also press CTRL+F to turn the in-game FPS counter on and monitor what the game is doing more closely.

Oh, and also I wanted to ask - when the game stutters, does the sound stutter as well? Because mine did. It was the first clue that it's not actually a GPU problem but the CPU/engine one.

Thanks! (y)
I have read about those options. Believe me, I have tried a lot of stuff. Even setting graphics on low. I think it is the game itself starting to have trouble to keep up with all the objects it generates during game play. Also setting frames to 144, which my monitor will handle.
Every time the graphics deteriorate in a similar pattern.

What do you run?

You mean my system I've tried it on?
Ryzen 5 3600 with 16GB RAM and RX5700XT where I played on a 1440p monitor and Ryzen 7 3700X with 32GB RAM and RTX2080Ti for VR (mostly, sometimes I play on the monitor as well (the same one as the other rig). The system and games are installed on an PCI 4.0 M.2 drive
I've experienced this stuttering on both machines, so like you said, it's the game, not the PC.

That being said, I think you should continue (within reason, of course) to try and mitigate the problem on your own, because I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a fix on the Fdev side.

Well... i currently just play a while and then exit the game to the main menu. That's a solution that works for now.
Thanks for your info. Much like my specs. I only have a slight higher CPU, but for game play that should not matter.
VR sounds nice. I did read about the stutter in VR. But I think that is not VR related and with a 2080Ti you're running a V12 motor in there!

I was reading the fps just yet. Fresh in the HiRes Radeon software reports 118fps. Played a while and just went back into the game. No shooting in the HiRes. Heavy stuttering. Radeon software reports 24fps.

I don't expect a quick fix from the Devs, because this seems to me a more complex problem handling the graphics, yet I do believe that they should be made aware of the problem, so they can keep it in mind and keep on the lookout for better performance.

Yeah, I think the best we can hope for is that this issue will be fixed in "New Era" update, early next year. I don't think they're going to spend time on it now (although it would still be very much appreciated, of course!), because this problem exists and is known for years and if they didn't fix it by now, there's not much point trying to figure it out now with less than a year left on this build.

The number of ships and the number of ships shooting at the same time seem to be the controlling factors that sets mine off. When you go to a new RES, it takes a while for the action to build up, which is why you don't see it at first, and possibly why many people don't see it at all, especially when they use weapons that run out of ammo quickly. It's been like this for years. FD have taken some steps to improve it, which solve it for a while, but then you get a better PC with higher resolution that sets it off again as if something is being throttled in the game code.

Bit late... I am now exploring in the Fomadine Rift. No RES over there and high fps.
I didn't know this has been a problem for years. Indeed it is the amount of action going on that is a factor. Also for how fast the graphics degrade. I would think it is related to the game engine. I just wonder if they clean up the "garbage" faster and unlink these objects, if it would improve. But well .. All we can do is notify on a problem.
