Newcomer / Intro New, confused and fried.

Hello, I recently picked the game back up after trying it out years back.. I had gotten a HOTAS (X55) to play back then but was overwhelmed with the information and just.. Well scale of it.

In short I want to pick it back up, I miss my space games, I loved Freelancer and played that for years transporting.. But my issue is really I am still confused by a few things, one being that with the default X55 profile.. It seems sparse and like a lot of controls are missing from both the joy and throttle considering how many buttons there are. I tried looking for profiles on the forums and through some other sites. I cant seem to find any recentish on the forums and I am not sure where to look or even begin with when it comes to this.

I even tried doing a mission when I reinstalled and I got stuck at a beacon that needed to be scanned or something but the scan didnt want to work.

Sorry if it is just repeats of questions you all heard millions of times.. I am just lost and hoping for some guidance in this..

Thank you for your time and have a good day!
Stuart.

I also recommend staying in the pilots federation zone/playpen, doing the tutorials and missions for a few weeks, while getting used to the steep learning curve of all ships systems, functions.
Once you leave, your success outside the safety and confines of the pilots area will multiplies exponentially, based on the grounding of these skills.

But remember, once you leave the pilots federation play pen, you can't go back to it.

Best wishes to your greater success Cmdr Stewi 07

There is a site called edrefcard that you can get a printable view of your own bindings and it has a list of other people's bindings you can view and download:

You can always ask for help here or on the Galactic Academy Discord (message at top of this forum).

Good luck. (y) 🕹

Problem is I had a chara from when I first started, I dont even know where I am / I dont have any tutorials, is there a way to re-enable or just redo the start? ( Only got 1k credits and I believe starter ship so )

Thank you for the links, though how do I know if they used all the keybinds available or whatnot? (Not sure how many there truly are that are needed)

I'd say it's a good time to restart.
Yes there is a way. But I'm on the Ps4 format. You're obviously on PC so I can't advise you there.
Hopefully someone will chime in with a response or you can start a private chat with someone who has participated in this thread.
You can always tell exactly where you are by looking at the left panel and the navigation tab. It's there. Then you can also see exactly where you are by clicking the galaxy map tab, same panel, just scroll down to the sub tab.

Have you installed the Horizons expansion?

i think the only way is to start from scratch is a new account which means buying the game again.
maybe write frontier a ticket and ask them if they could reset your account.

but i dont really understand why you want to do that. you can do all the tutorials no matter how long you have played the game.
there is also no real "death" in the game.
the worst thing that can happen is that you have to completely restart with a sidewinder.
you dont really need the starter zone. when i started the game it didnt even exist afaik. just play solo mode until you know enough about the game to feel safe playing in open mode.

Tutorials/training can be accessed from the main menu as well as from the right hand panel in your cockpit when in the game, apart from their main purpose they are very useful for setting up the binds for your controls because they give you repeatable situations.

There is an option on the main menu that lets you delete your save and create a new character, I have never used it and am unsure whether that would start you in the new starter zone but you could try asking support to help.

I came back to the game after a five year absence and just wiped my existing account and started again - it kept my name and set me up with a starter Sidey, a Freagle and a new starter system.

Use EDRefcard (link in a post above) and you can either look for your supported joystick and and start with an empty set up and program it yourself or look to see if there is one that has been done, modify that in the controls and then upload your own version for reference.

For me it was worth space-bar-ing my old profile because the game has changed immensely.

Best of luck CMDR o7

I too think starting over is´nt necessary.
Just start the Tutorials from the Menue.
I have to admit, mapping the Hotas is a hassle, but it´s worth it. I could not imagine
a better way to control my ship ;)
I would advise not to use pre sets, but use your own settings, this helped me at least to remember everything ;)

Fly safe

I take a middle view on the HOTAS. Some of the settings like pitch, yaw, throttle etc are fine. Just go through each setting on the joystick menu one at a time. Change it as you want and then test it. It is slow, but you will then get used to it as muscle memory takes over. After a while all controls will be second nature.

Welcome back!

Thank you all for the help so far, I think I will redo my chara purely as I am going to buy the expansion.

Sorry for more questions, about EDRefCard site.. Why are some in green/red and multiple linked to certain things?
I am really not good at the whole bind my own stuff.. So I want to look for a good keybind to begin with. (If anyone has a recommended for X55 HOTAS would love to know!)

just do the tutorials and bind them as you go. first: axis, thrusters second: sc, weapons third: menu navigation and so on.
thats how i did it.

Colours are the default way of indicating the use of modifier buttons to produce different actions on those buttons. Some controls have different actions depending upon context - so the same button could produce different actions in for example: when flying, driving in SRV, in Galaxy Map, in Camera Suite, etc., etc.

Thank you, I found a profile that showed a few extra, so far so good and I am up and playing with my Hotas. Now just to figure the mass of information out XD

...and after going through the effort of creating your personal bindings, please take the time to back them up. You'll find a "bindings" directory in your install.

Happy travels and welcome back, CMDR.

I have, I have read countless times of binding disappearing randomly, being unset for no reason and of course an update wiping them. =] Thank you!

I'm in the same boat. I played when the game first came out then dropped it a month later. Too many things and not enough time. Plus I usually play solo and the game is much more fun with others so it just didn't seem worth my time. I picked it back up last week on a space game binge and I've stuck around but the size of the game makes it seem... dead. And there doesn't seem to be any real player tracking or communication. I've spent about 30 hours in the past week and seen 3 other people. One in passing. One when I was so bored I was talking to the automated cruise ship messages. And one that tried to gank me at a star. I thought it was another AI pirate interdicting me so I submitted and was muttering to myself, "I'm so ing tired of you guys. Can't you just-" 1 volley knocks out my shields and 20% hp…. oh.

but yeah. 3 people in 30 hours and maybe as many systems. just kinda rudderless at the moment.
