Are there many other women on here/playing Elite: Dangerous?

At the start of lockdown I posted a pic of the ED splash screen and my T.Flight, ready to go... many of the guys from my previous life in IT all reminisced fondly of the original BBC B version that I grew up with.
One of my former tennis writers is almost inspired to get ED as a result of what I have been posting about it.

Friends have no issue with me being a female gamer - an ex-boyf actually saw me playing Christian Pinder's Elite: The New Kind, and then got me into playing Eve ... but thankfully that episode of madness came to an end (both the game and him!)

Back after about a five year gap...so nice to see I am not entirely alone!

Likewise! To all of the above. I'm glad some of the good I was hoping for came out of the thread.

Idk you sure have been in rapid response defense mode so it certainly appears that way. One would suggest that the OP has a keyboard and the ability to acknowledge this or not at their own discretion. Perhaps it would be wise to allow that.

Sure, I have a keyboard, but at a certain point in this thread (the first three or four pages, mainly) there were like ten people poking merry fun at me, the idea of women in games, and "women that are actually men hurhur I identify as an attack helicopter SJWs don't get political now". All that in response to me asking, quite reasonably, if there were any other women here. I don't think that's acceptable behaviour and I appreciated the apologies of some of those contributing, and I appreciated that some people didn't just ignore it and spoke up about what was right. It was a good thing and I appreciated it, filthymick420. I hope you'll see that from my point of view.

I don't think we should be singling people out based on gender or professed gender. Can we all just be cmdrs and have a laugh?? Maybe the cmdrs who identify as female don't want to be handed around in a list to others searching for women as well.. I dunno, it's all a bit silly, let's just have fun together and do space stuff!!

I would love that, but unfortunately not everyone in games is willing to just have fun together and do space stuff. Leaving aside the various extremely unsavoury and/or illegal conduct, it's not uncommon to be asked to show t*ts or gtfo, make someone a sammich, be called a little b*, wh, or a stuck up c***, etc. I could hide my gender and lie by omission, as I did when I was a girl playing Halo, but I don't think that's a particularly fair requirement for avoiding abuse. Instead I think a reasonable course of action is to just ask the community if there are any women around in the hopes of actually meeting some people who've been around the block and tackled these issues before you. I never asked for lists and of course I'm sorry to anyone who was mentioned and didn't want to be. From the people I was actually aiming this post at though I've gotten great responses, which is really encouraging.

Plus, in practice in a heavily male dominated environment, "No one talk about what gender they are because it makes people uncomfortable" becomes "Women don't mention that you're women or we'll make you uncomfortable".

Elite has given me thousands of hours of fun, I coulda spent that few quid on a snack or a pint down the pub.. also I love shiny things! I REGRET NOTHING!!

You'll find no judgement from me on if you choose to buy it of course, I just know that I can't handle it so I draw a line in the sand at a nice clean point, which is zero. For anyone who's had or thinks they could have a problem with gambling it can be a slippery slope, is all.

Oh agreed! And it's good that you've got a handle on things and know yourslef well enough to know when enough is enough.... Sliiiiiiight modification of your description of arx though if I may. It's not gambling, you are getting something of value and it's not a loot box. It can be addictive to look this fabulous though! 😂😍

I only spoke on it as some may take such 'chivalry' as just as offensive. You'll notice i hadnt been involved in the gender joking. Personally i am indifferent to a fellow cmdrs gender. We're all just 1s and 0s in game and out imo

Also I think you'll find that the *******s who talk to you like that also talk to men in equally aggressive, degrading, horrible, sordid, disgusting ways. It's not because you're a woman, it's because they're a horrible man (usually) Your ears would shudder to hear some of the things hurled my way in the past. Please don't tar us all with the same brush!

Yeah I know it's not a lootbox, I still think it works on the same pathway in the brain. Or at least, I've had problems with lootboxes before and I'm 100% certain if I started with ARX those problems would come back, so there's some relationship there I think, at least for me. It's why I think MTX in general are cancer. Sorry to be a party pooper, again I don't have an issue with other people buying them, I have an issue with companies for making them. Same as cigarettes, no judgement on those that buy, plenty of judgement on the companies that sell.

Fair enough. I didn't realise you were just trying to prevent anyone causing me offence. As you aptly noted though, I'm perfectly capable of defending myself if I find anyone's behaviour to be a bit too chivalrous ;) I appreciate you seeing my point of view

I promise nothing about tar, but I will grant clemency in the matter of secondary feathery coatings.

Wow the thinly veiled transphobia in this thread is pretty horrible.

OP yes there are a fair few women playing this game, I guess choose not to reveal themselves though.
Is it considered transphobic if you’re just curious if someone is trans or not? I’ve been told that I shouldn’t care, but then that’s someone telling me how I should feel and comes off hypocritical. I have no ill will in wanting to know, I’m just curious by nature.

I consider it meanspirited and sometimes transphobia to make "I identify as XYZ" jokes, or really most any jokes where the punchline is "Identify as a gender hurhur, you know, like the transes". Along similar lines jokes where the punch line is a "woman" actually being a "man in a dress" is an extremely common transphobic trope. The prototypical example is in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

If you're talking about this thread, I don't think anyone's done or asked something along the lines of being "curious if someone's trans or not", so that's not what's being referred to. If you're just asking in general, it really depends. If you don't feel like you have a comfortable enough relationship with someone to ask what's in their trousers or for details of their medical history, for example because you don't know them and you've just encountered them in a forum, then I generally wouldn't ask. This is a complex topic and it doesn't have super simple answers, though. Sometimes if someone posts on a forum it might actually make sense to ask, but those situations are rare and situational. One example I can think of is if someone posts looking for a transgender group (or maybe an LGBT/queer group), then it could be a reasonable question to ask if they are trans, depending. In that case I'd probably do it in private message.
