Both my ships and commander are generally named after the Lord of the Rings universe, I try to find a suitable name for the ships based on their intended role (some names I spelled differently because of how they were transcribed to my native tongue):
CMDR Orodruin - after Mount Doom's Sindarin name
Asp Explorer (Exploration): Radagast - After Radagast the brown, a wizard that did not partake in the war of the ring
Python (Core miner): Durin's bane - The Balrog of Moria, the dwarves dug too deep and too greedily.
Python (laser miner): Angband - The ancient subterranean fortress of Melkor.
FDL (bounty hunter): Ungoliant - The first giant spider of Arda. Distant mother of Shelob.
Krait mk II (thargoid scout killer): The Witch King - After the Witch-King of Angmar, leader of the Nazgûl, first among ring-wraiths.
Anaconda (long range hauler/engineering mule): Bill the Pony - After the pony travelling with the hobbits until the gates of Moria. Trusty carrier of things.
Python (passenger liner): Bombadill - After Tom Bombadil.
Imperial Eagle (speed racer): Shadowfax - After the lord of horses, running faster than the wind.
Type 7 (search and rescue): Gwaihir the Windlord - After the lord of the great Eagles carrying Frodo away from Mount Doom.
Corvette (not yet role-cast): Orthank - After the tower of Isengard.
Sidewinder (memorabilia): Samwise Gamgee - Old and trusted friend that has always been with me.

I also have some other ships that do not follow this naming convention ... For example, my large laser miners (T9 and Cutter) are called Pay Night and Pay Night 2 for homonymic reasons ...
Finally got around to renaming some of my ships that did not follow the naming convention.
Cutter (laser miner): Gothmog - Lord of Balrogs
Krait Phantom (material farmer/bubble bus): Mithrandir - Gandalf's elven name.
I also built a new DBX:
Diamondback Explorer (bubble bus/Guardian ruins): Strider - Self explanatory.

why don't you use a data scanner and find out! :)

srs : random names just pop up in me head.but lately just for the job purpose.or ships from sci fi tv

Relevance/Humour

Vulture - "Tweetie Pie" - I doubt that the name will fool anybody into a false sense of security, but they might just die laughing as its beam laser hoses away their shields.
Keelback - "Bumblebee" - From when it had a minelayer defence. Then I found (from asking here) that npcs had learned to evade mines, and so fitted engineered beams and M/Cs instead - still packs quite a sting but rarely has to.
Cobra MK3 - "Cousin Jack" - Fitted for surface mining/adjustable for light asteroid mining. Named after the Cornish tin miners.

Not long reset my save so I've only got three ships but the naming convention I've always used has been names of songs by Iron Maiden and Metallica.

My Mamba is called Motorbreath, my dropship is The Journeyman and my AspX is The Montsegur.

Other names used on past saves were Whiplash, The Trooper and The Unforgiven 1, 2 and 3 (a Cutter, Annie and Corvette respectively).

My main PC account - All ships named after Fields of the Nephilim songs or albums.
My alt PC account - All ship names in Latin or Roman Legions, for the fighting ships.
XBox One account - All ships named after Greek Gods.
PS4 account - All ships named after British warships.

Whiplash. That is an interesting name for a ship. Sounds like something out of Flesh Gordon! :)

I will admit I went straight to Latin.

Cobra Mk3: Terminus Est (This is the end)

Asp Explorer: Astra Inclinant (The stars incline us - the other half of this is ''Sed non obligant" or "but they do not bind us")

Mamba: Exitus Acta Probat (The end justifies the means)

Anaconda: Caedite Eos (Kill them all - quoting a Bishop who finished with "God will know his own")

Federal Corvette: Oderint Dum Metuant (Let them hate, so long as they fear - little bit of Caligula)

Type 10: It's rigged as a miner/combat freighter so I'm thinking Acheronta Movebo (I shall move Hell - from the Aeneid)

T-7 = Flying Brick
T-10 = Lead Frizbee
AspX = X-Factor 5
Python = Short Hauler
Krait = Privateer's Bain
DBX = FarScape 3
Challenger = Short Round 7
FGS = Goid Gunner
3 others as yet un-named

I like it. Very classy. Although as the Cobra is a starter ship wouldn’t Initium Est or Principium be more appropriate?

Good point. I might change it to Terminus Sum - I am the end. It's a bounty hunter rig.

I also have an unnamed Sidewinder that I'm thinking might be Maximus in Minimis - Great in little things.

Now, what to name my Fleet Carrier...

How about Magnum Baculus the Big Stick?

Steal an NPC's name: Brocodius Dudebrodian :unsure: :LOL: :ROFLMAO:

How about Magnum Baculus the Big Stick?

That reminds me of the Iain M Banks ships (which are a VERY rich resource and I'm surprised they haven't come up yet), one of which had the name "I Said, I have a Big Stick".

Surprisingly subtle for a ship that could rip the crust off a planet and use the core like a billiard ball.

I went with names from Roman history. Tacitus for my explorer (he was a historian), Marcus Aurelius for my Anaconda, Scipio Africanus for my FdL (a general), Cicero for my Adder. And of course Julius Caesar for my Corvette.

Feels all a bit lofty though, so this thread is great inspiration. Was thinking of a full rename to favourite Muppets. Or maybe Ben & Jerry flavours. Seems song names are a good and well-used resource. I'll give that a look.

It took me weeks to name my last dog. I'm terrible at choosing names so I let some folks who are far cleverer than I help me out.

Mine are all named after local beers (well there may be a scotch and bourbon in there too). If I like a ship, I stop by the local store and pick a few beers with cool names. After sampling the beers I choose one that seems to fit the ship in question.

Few examples:
Cutter - Fifteen 54
DBX - Knotty Pear
Vulture - Cutthroat
Corvette - Fade to black
Courier - Psycho Penguin
Imp Eagle - Lillicoi
Keelback - Kilt-lifter
FDL - Balefire
etc...

Difficult to explain, but each beer really fits with the character of the ship.

My fleet carrier will be named 'The Keg' of course.

Bit of advice, if you try something like this, don't try to explain what you are doing to any bystanders!

No real theme. Some of my ships, their purpose & name:

Clipper: Archangel: PVP piracy
Type 10: Gold Digger: Mining
Fer De Lance: Pew Pew Die: PVP / Combat Zones
Cutter: Rising Star: Trade
Corvette: 2nd Amendment: It's a Corvette
Krait Mk II: Grey Wolf: Multi-role
Krait Phantom: Moonlight: Exploration
Anaconda: Liberator: Multi-role

Two newest ships:

Mamba: Ghost: PVP I need to re-name this ship. Its build is different from how I envisioned it would go when I bought it. Still trying to figure this ship out.
FAS: Dain Brammage: pretty new, kind of stupid. Intended for PVP stealth piracy, build's not finished and I'm not sure whether it's going to be a successful build.

Not ship names this time but I started a new Steam version (humblebundle sale) the other day and I decided to name the Commander after a figure from Greek mythology - well that was a mistake - every single choice was "name already in use" - I mean some of the most obscure names and variant spellings - all in use - so I used another idea altogether since I wasn't going to fly as Eirene2 or Tanaga5. So lots of cultured commanders?
