Newcomer / Intro Another basic Q so apols! PvE - do chaff & heatsinks even work against NPCs?

I plan to get into engineering
I strongly advise you get into the habit of collecting stuff as you go about your business NOW. If you dont, when you want to start you have ZIP and will be forced into the grind. There really is no need to grind if you play smart.

Such as? I don’t do grind anymore to be honest... I play as I want and if I get bored I just go off and do something else instead. I seem to have accumulated a lot of materials just from mining...
also think I probably need to have a go at Planetary landings and wielding an SRV around at some stage...

Yes, a bit of SRV work will be required for the higher level materials. Pity they made Base Scan possible from your ship as there is now no actual reason to ever need an SRV except to gather them. If you have LOTS of low grade elements, you might trade some up, but this isnt really effective unless you will be doing lots more mining.
While in SC, skip though the ships and scan any that pass in front of you
If your ship has room (most of the larger medium ships have room), then have :
Wake Scanner - Scan a wake every time you leave a station
Collector Limpet Controller and some Limpets - Collect the loot after you kill a Pirate
Keep an eye out for USS when traveling in system. When you have time or are in the mood visit and loot a Degraded or Encoded. Always loot any High Grade Emissions you see.

Ok cool - current plan is to do a bit more mining just to get a base level of CR ... then I think a bit of a break and fly back to give my Viper some much needed updating and get out into RESs to get my combat ranking moving, and also like I said figure out how to land on a planet, use an SRV - all I think achievable over the next week or so. I try and do a day's 'desk' work and then in between do mundane house stuff and play and at the weekends look to play as much as possible. I NEVER have this much time to myself in normal work but I fear normal work may be a long time in coming back so I need to feel I am still being productive as well as resorting to my 15-year-old Elite/BBC B playing self!
