Newcomer / Intro New player needing direction

As a new player of about 24 in game hrs, i think learning diamond mining has kinda ruined ED for me, after the learning curve got asp exp. Ship in cppl hrs, (most of that time was scanning systems, cant seem not 2 knowing they cld be worth millions) I absolutely love space games and love ED in all of its vastness, Making own goals seems cool, but once i log i just dont feel much like playing knowing i can get pretty much any ship in a day (billions are easy to make already) I feel like aint much to keep me like "yes ED i need to play you!" Yes they're missions but so lame just go here do this, no real depth to it, Fighting aliens seems cool but im far from being able to solo, (I don't know if I need expansion for alien killing weapons?) So any advice would be awesome, would love some ED friends also as im sure it would def help (xb1 gamertag - Nasty Nick049) and for those that love the dark abyss, Should i buy Horizons? Pro's and con's?? Thank you to all for reading and for any responses! Hoo-rah to Gamers [$ not an issue but so many D^mn good games coming soon]

Horizons gives you engineers and a whole lot of running around...
Core mining ... bit more skill involved than just laser mining
Roads to Riches
Passenger missions
Resource Extraction Sites to build up your combat ranking...
Obtaining that pass to Jameson Memorial
Colonia

Plenty of stuff there especially if you have just got yourself into an Asp.

Yes get horizons, it does add a lot.
I also recommend you also perform a Cmdr reset, start again, and this time don't go mining.
When people come here and ask for get rich quick advice, I say DON'T, to try and stop exactly the thing that has happened to you.

Horizons
Pros: Engineering your ships can’t be done using credits. Access to new ships and experiences like falling off things in an SRV.
Cons: There are locations and tips to avoid that would speed up the acquisition of materials needed.

Yes avoiding missions is a good thing, other opinions vary.

With Horizons access you could try to fill in that giant eye-spy book, the Codex, with reports or conformations for all items and sectors as a long term target.

There are lots of goals you can set yourself in this game the ships are just the tools used to go after them.

This. Very much this.
If your only goal is to have enough credits to buy anything that can be bought, then this game is over in a week. But there are so many other things to try out, so many different ship loadouts and different styles of gameplay. Find the ones that appeal to you personally and let nobody tell you that things have to be done a certain way.

Terrible start to the game by mining - as you realise all that money makes any mission boring.
I didn't have any interest in mining until I saw a video of core mining and my biggest haul of credits came from a gold delivery mission for 8mill before that haha. That was after 4 months of tooling around in my DBX doing mainly black box missions for the big bucks.
Unfortunately I got hooked on the core mining till I hit a billion and now have to deliberately avoid it.
I give the money away for bribes in stations and that gives a few interesting missions and i always let the pirates interdict me so i can torture them for the hassles they gave me in the DBX when doing the black box missions.
Eventually I want to get into PvP and join up in the eradication of those nasty gankers i read of but I'm awhile away from that yet.
So best advice i could give is have a long term goal and take as much time as possible - i absolutely love this game and forum and would like it to last forever .

Also get into VR and a hotas.

Also keep off those cheat guides that tell you where everything is - i haven't even looked at them and won't as it makes it too easy. Keep a note pad handy and check out any system for traders .

Someone is running a 'sidey to FC in 1 day 14 hours' on YouTube. Not seen it, but Google thought I would like to.

To be fair to that content generator he recommended new players didn't do it. I agree with the OP that mega bucks mining ruins the early game.

Most forum members on this strand have have hundreds and more hours in game. 24 hours seems restartable. But that didn't take the knowing away. I'd had about 60 MCr when I started mining and I made that in my first run. I realised the game would never be the same again. But I have discovered lots of other cool things since. Guardian sites and Thargoids create lots of entertainment in Horizons.

I will restart missions again soon in a different profession. Then its more about the work than the payback. I suppose that might lead into Powerplay.

Missions seem pointless now. You make more money from mining and there are various hotspots where you can farm all the materials in no time.

This statement is true if the only point is making money.

For the OP, I don't know, if you're bored or disillusioned in 24 hours, then maybe it's not the game for you. I say this with no malice. It's not a game for everyone. While I recommend the game, and Horizons freely, if I were you I'd hold off on Horizons until you've got more time in and find you like the game. Horizons isn't going to suddenly make it compelling and fun on it's own.

Why else would you want to do missions apart from money and materials, especially after you got your Cutter and Corvette? If you want fun, fighting Thargoids or any other combat is going to be much more desirable than running backwards and forwards doing menial tasks.

First off - to actually qualify for ships and permits.

Secondly - BGS stuff.

However, in general I agree that with the stupid amounts of easy credits from mining, mission-running is otherwise a waste of time.

They seem to delight in spoiling the game - engineers unbalanced combat, powerpants unbalanced trading (for me anyway), passenger sightseeing unbalanced exploration - mining now mucks up much more. Combat is now the only rank that isn't mundane and for people like me that are not that interested in it, that leaves just finding other activities for fun.

Thank for the advice everyone, its not all about th creds, ive got to find that that took me out while i running diamonds lol, dont understand why the pirates dont just mine themselves its easy 🤣

Hey NN,

If you have the resources, why not try out buying a few of the smaller ships, outfit them and fly them a bit?
I found the most fun with the littlest ones. The Hauler has a great jump range for its cost and size, fit it with scanners and fly out to Maia system, do a little exploring. The Adder is a very nice little mission ship, and you HAVE to do some smuggler runs in a Cobra.

Grab a Keelback and set it up as a miner. Build a Viper racing car.

The cost of the stable will sink your credits and bring back some balance.
