Being an explorer since 3200 (I started with Frontier: Elite 2), I can say that one thing that make exploration exciting is the unknown, and the fear of it.
I believe that, in order to add more variety and tension to exploration missions, a "Mysterious Emissions" signal source may be considered, to be found in systems far from the bubble (i.e. >500ly). It will be a rarely spawned signal of course.
A curious explorer that investigates these emissions may find a variety of objects, some useful for data, some useless, some scary, some dangerous.
For example, a brief list of possible source of signals:

- human ship wreckage
- mysterious alien artifact (not Guardian, nor Tharg), maybe when scanned a loud and scary alien transmission fills the silent cabin...
- alien (mysterious) ship wreckage, maybe dangerous if you get too close...
