ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

Depth which can be added fairly easily.
I would love it if I could have full on combat pilots in their ships provide escort to be in cargo runs on missions and community goals
BUT, just a like a real fighter pilot, most of your missions will not see any activity. As most of you have ground billions out of mining you lose a lot of interest in the activities of the game and that isn't surprising.
Elite Dangerous is a game you to need to put effort into to get enjoyment out of, not just sit passively and complain that the Dev's haven't put in the specific thing you just thought of, or didn't think of more often

I am confused. What are you implying? That I do not put effort into playing ED? I have been with the game since beta and have more than 2000 hours poured into this game.
I have never done core mining by the way. I did a few hours laser mining back in the day. So no mining billions for me.

Depth can be added in many ways. I have posted many proposals to achieve this.
I have very outspoken and developed ideas about adding depth for bounty hunting and piracy, scientific gameplay (which is not in the game at all), scavenging gameplay, smuggling gameplay, enhanced supercruise mechanics, npc crew mechanic, in-game captains log etc. etc.

Were not talking about horizons. How do you know they are equivalent from a technical standpoint?
How do you know they are non-equivalent?

It's not because a new tech has been made that there's a fork of the codebase. The new tech simply can replace the old one.

Sure they have, but it's only for a small amount of planets which have been designed especially for those places. It's not the same when in ED we have millions of planets with unique life on them, not just 20 or 30.
Yes of course, but if they are able to make beige color for the planets and also to put futuristic trees, they can also put some green color and classic vegetation.

They can also procedurally generate oceans, lakes, rivers.

David demonstrated with the clouds in a video, you remember ?

Yep, same here. Though I'd make some assumptions on your 2 points I highlighted: I don't find mentions that Horizons is required to use Odyssey, so we could have players with only ED and Odyssey, so they will have legs without planets surfaces, so they'd have some surfaces to walk on, so I guess at the very least ship interiors and maybe stations. Though I guess we won't have huge places with minutes long train commutes ;)

I put those two points as "later", because they reqire a lot of design and implementations beyond what they already have plenty to do for the first three points.
And about "Horizons" dependencies, i'd not be much surprised if Horizons became baseline for the launch of Odissey. I think that would be a great move to relaunch ED to the general audience.

If that's correct (and at this stage, who knows) It would mean that one of the main messages in the initial press release for Odyssey is very misleading.

Why bother to buy Odyssey if I`m going to get the "stunning new tech" on the base game? Furthermore, if you are correct, then last generation hardware will be a major limiting factor in the console space.

Amazing, Grace. But wrong. On this matter, no answer since about two years ago when the Elite:Deadly issue came up and VR suddently completely vanished from marketing. Back then, Paige - who has left the team in the meantime - came up with the 'commitment' statement I quoted.

O7,
🙃
So an announcement for Odyssey was made yesterday - possibly even a very rushed one as someone posted the wrong video.
Nowhere is VR support mentioned in the rushed details (nor even minimum/recommended specifications - but we do know the PC version requires Windows) and there is mass hand-wringing (yes I've participated in the other thread too) because of this omission.
Even recently a Dev post detailed the supported HMD's (look it up) quite specifically...

So no response has actually been given since yesterday about VR support on Odyssey... I am quite amazing, Grace... ;)

because that line is cooler for PR

That doesnt explain that Odyssey is "Powered by stunning new tech" - implying that if you dont purchase odyssey, you wont be "Powered by stunning new tech"

No that is not how FDev ever has done things. For example we see more detail on that planet in the trailer from space. Something like that will most likely be to the visual advantage of non-Odyssey owners too. The only thing is that you won't be able to set down on such a planet if it is an atmospheric world.
And I expect the stunning new tech to be mostly used for new assets down on atmospheric planets. This stuff will of course only be visible to Odyssey owners, because they have access to such planets.

At the time of showing the cloud stuff they said it wasn't their tech.
But just a demo of what they wanted to achieve aswell.
If i member correctly.

Amazing, Grace...

That was brilliant, BTW (y)

I also do remember the article linked - having an acrive interest in ED VR too :)

Because you won't have feet. And furthermore you won't enjoy planets if you don't have Horizons. So you'll use your feet elsewhere, maybe in your ships and stations.

I think everyone is panicking about VR for no reason. Wasnt the game released with VR support? Can any of you tell me about an instance where a game that supported VR since release, released a dlc that required you not to use VR?

Seriously a bunch of doomsayers for the sake of hysteria. Get over it already

The saviour himself on a pogostick, and with all due respect,

who's acting hysterically here? Take a look in the mirror. Yes, a whole lot of people are worried about lack of VR support. And? That is their OPINION, their CONCERN. Accusing them of panicking, hysteria, and doomsaying -- all three of which are, typically, derogatorally used to describe people who are emotionally unstable -- does not pour oil on troubled waters, does not defuse the situation, indeed, serves no other purpose than to go on a rant that is exactly what you are accusing us of doing. I do appreciate the irony, by the way... but I digress.

What has that to do with doomsaying, or hysteria? Many merely stated that they will not buy this product if VR is not supported. End of story. Doomsaying? Poppycock. Hysteria? Poppycock. Panicking? Double poppycock.

This has nothing to do with entitlement, or some other attempt to make VR lovers look like spoiled brats. It's simply about knowing early whether to get hyped or not. I earn my own money, I spend it the way I see fit. If I like a product, I'll buy it. If not, I'll pass. No entitlement is involved AT ALL. I'd just like this question answered, so I can either plan to get the DLC or continue with the Horizons; and, no, I'm not going to break down and cry if they do not support VR. I'm an adult, I don't go boo-hoo over things like that. (I usually try not to get personal, either, not even on the internet. I always imagine my counterpart as a 6'6" dude, built like the Hulk, covered with tattoos and a grim expression on his face, and ask myself: "Would I annoy such a guy in person?" Since I'm not suicidal, the answer must be no. ;) Okay, I'm kidding. I try to be polite 'cause it's the right thing to do -- and that involves NOT making sweeping assumptions, as I really don't like people pointing out to me what a tool I am. That's my wife's job. ;) )

A discussion is much like repair work: A hammer is hardly ever the best option. Just sayin'.
