ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

If the majority of posters here are right, don't expect a star Citizen like tech - it`ll all have to run on last (current) generation console hardware. That would be an interesting limitation given FD most likely already have next-gen console dev kits, right now.

That's a good thing. I'm not expecting "Second Life in Space" anyhow... and I'd love to see it developed before I'm dead and can't actually enjoy it, whereas SC will likely be "in development" for another decade the way they're progressing.

Quite right, however, if they are indeed going down that route, you are not going to get an experience which anything close to the trailer, because it`ll have to run on current-gen console hardware. That would be a curious decision, right at the end of a console cycle
Well as much as I'm hyped by the announcement I'm not seeing anything way beyond current consoles hardware in the teaser. A pumped up surface, a skybox, nothing really out of touch for a console.

They may well be going down that route, and it does have its benefits as you get to bring everyone along for the ride.

But from a technical standpoint, I cant help but think it would be a shame to skip that opportunity to revisit old design decisions which now constrain what frontier can do in the game as well all those purdy next gen graphics. We`ll see.

a balance pass on the op weapons/ shield boosters, to make more builds viable and bring ttk down.
fixing instancing so players can interact reliably.
allow powerplay to be what it was intended as, a way for player to competively interact with meaning and outcomes which effect the universe
anything to show a bit of love. justr saying so far devtime is skewed towards pve. time to share it out more evenly perhaps
Your first point can be made for PvE just as well.
My issue with PP allowing players to affect the universe is balance a few pilots shouldn’t be able to produce effects influencing whole chunks of the bubble it’s just to big.

I see a lot of comments around the fade to black transitions in order to get from your cockpit seat, to the SRV or on foot. Is it really that big a deal to not be able to walk out of your cockpit onto the surface?

NO interiors (ships, stations, buildings etc).
Transition to on-foot on planet surface is via black screen, like with SRV atm.

While you are able to, for instance, explore space stations or even the inside of the ships in Star Citizen, Elite players will only be able to stretch their legs on planets for the time being. Nonetheless a big step forwards.
You are welcome.
Ain't it the website well known for its SC bias? And where do they come with these details from?

It would be really nice if FD took the opportunity in Odyssey to completely revamp the mission delivery system and make it more dynamic. Perhaps even selling additional mission packs as optional DLC.

It's probably not a big deal but .. to help the speculation along .. your SRV is not located in the same place as your cockpit seat and in the game right now you can't walk .. ergo, in the game now we have fade to black. Whether that will change is anybody's guess.

As a VR player walking around the ship to an exit hatch/door would be nice , but I kind of understand why they wouldnt do that since 'flat' players make up most of the userbase.
(in VR we can kinda walk around the ships , at least a few feet away from the chair , but its not really designed for it and gets glitchy the further out we go )

The article you cite doesn't mention the transition from pilots seat in the ship to walking on the planets surface...

Via google translate:
has released details of its upcoming Odyssey expansion , previously known as the "Next Era" update . One of the biggest innovations: legs for your character . With them you can visit the surface of the planets instead of - as was previously the case - only with the Scarab vehicle.

This is special because you are currently always tied to the seat of your vehicle in the SciFi game . Visits to space stations are done via a simple menu. You can't get out. The Odyssey update wants to change this in spring 2021 and makes many players happy.

Elite Dangerous as a shooter
Odyssey will not only allow you to go hiking on the planet. The developer promises "unlimited freedom". So you will not only look at idyllic landscapes, but also find outposts and settlements .

However, the excursions harbor dangers that you face with gun violence. You decide how you want to proceed. From deadly sneak attacks to tough firefights , everything should be possible.

In future, you will therefore not only equip your spaceship, but also your avatar itself. To what extent is still unknown. The team only declares that you will have access to various weapons and other equipment. Coordination with your teammates will also play an important role in one or the other argument.

As good as in Star Citizen?
With the new feature, Elite Dangerous Star Citizen tries to "outpace" the rank. Because being able to leave the cockpit of the spaceship is one of the special features of Chris Roberts' sci-fi simulation. However , the feature in Elite will not be quite as extensive - at least at the beginning.

While you can also explore space stations and even the interior of the spaceships in Star Citizen, for example, elite players can only stretch their legs on the planets themselves . It's a big step anyway.

When is Odyssey coming?
It will take some time before you can start running in Elite Dangerous. Odyssey will not be released in December as originally planned, but only in spring 2021 . There is already a product page on Steam . However, the price is not yet known. The developer wants to announce more information through to publication in the form of developer diaries and trailers.

As has been said elsewhere, we do not know anything about the transition will occur, but it is my hope that we will get out of the pilots seat, and walk to the airlock, and descend a ladder / ramp / elevator to disembark. Part of this is because it is my hope that "space legs" will bring with it a swathe of first person interactions with the ship's interior, and exterior via space walking. Even if such things don't come immediately as part of the initial release of Odessy, as long as there was an intimation from Frontier that such things are going to be part of a subsequent update, I'll be delighted.

I wonder how FD are going to handle the "lore" contradictions around telepresence?
