Greetings Commanders,

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. We’ve been really excited to share this and it’s amazing to see that you all feel the same way!

This is just the beginning and we will be sharing more details and information in the coming months that you can look forward to.

We’re seeing all your streams, videos, posts and questions and, today, we wanted to answer a few for you straight away:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7
Please clarify if we will be able to access the full Ship interior of our ships! There is no point in keeping quiet about that....

If they are separate enough that I can play the game in whichever specific way I want for the day, that would be great. I mean ED would essentially become 2 games for me. An FPS for when I feel like that, and a VR space experience for when I feel like that.
I agree with that, BUT I suspect the real stinging disappointment for me would be if we had atmospheric landings and additional planet types but I couldnt land on them in VR, because those planet types were not in Horizons.

If it still supports head-tracking and an XBox controller in 2D, then there is no technical reason that it couldn't support VR. I'd be more than happy having my VR view and head-look and using a controller.

Yeah, I'd be interested in the reasoning too. There's the obvious potential for greater motion-sickness if running/jumping/dodging/jet-boosting about on foot, which obviously wouldn't affect head-tracking users to the same degree. I wonder if there's any more to it than that?

Performance? Could it be that surface exploration/combat is going to have higher hardware requirements, and so meeting the framerate required for non-pukey VR isn't guaranteed?

Yeah I saw that afterwards. I don't see HOW, however.

Odyssey could be all space legs. The separation would be that any time you need to stand up, if you're in VR it just says "nope" or the option is greyed out. My question is at what points that might happen. Will space legs suddenly become a regular part of flying, where I need to get up halfway often, or will it just be certain missions/a different gameplay mode entirely so that I can have 1 session of all VR and 1 session of FPS gameplay.

Elite for me is done in VR only. Hoping that everything space-flight related can still be enjoyed in VR in the sense that I can still fly down to these new planets while in VR. I can accept not being able to step out on foot while in VR at launch, but would be a shame if I'm blocked from all new content provided even though it'd still be part of the flight experience.

That's what I suspect will happen unfortunately.

this video is "in Engine" like shown at the beginning, the one you posted was CGI, it makes a lot of a difference.
do you know what you sometimes say guys? I already explained it 2 times after that comment .... a trailer, although it is made with the graphic engine of the game, it is still a CGI, it is not a gameplay video.

As long as I can still play in VR and not be completely crippled for doing so (like if you ignored Engineers from Horizons), I'd buy Odyssey either way. The only thing that would kill ED for me is if VR became untennable or if by playing VR I was choosing to limit myself to the point that the game wasn't fun anymore. If they separate it out enough that I can just plan my gameplay sessions around 2D fps mode and VR space flight mode, I'd be all over it.

Now, if I go to fly onto an atmospheric planet and it says "Sorry, you can't do this in VR", that would be some crap lol.

So just play in pancake mode all the time?

Believe it or not the game is quite enjoyable without VR.
For you perhaps. I went 2 months without a vr headset and tried ED. For me it was a shell of the game I am used to.
I regret buying the LTP. At least I could vote with my wallet. That is not sour grapes either. I just don't play some game genres out of VR any more.....
I hope oculus are very open about this on their store page because they won't be able to sell the expansion

This of course begs the question how VR will be handled with Odyssey installed, and in general how the transition between spaceflight and ground ops will be handled. If it means I have to switch to pancake in order to walk around - ok, definitely not nice, but I should be able to live with it. If it means that Odyssey will break the existing VR experience as soon as it's installed, then I guess I'll have to stay with Horizons.
