You are delusional

Which part? His comment about the cost of top-tier graphics chipsets and indeed the cost of VR gear itself is entirely valid.

VR is still a niche aspect of gaming, simply because a hell of a lot of gamers can't afford to drop the cash on a headset and the required graphics cards to make effective use of them. That's a fact, regardless of whether it's an issue that affects you personally or not.

I realise that reading this forum would lead people to believe that VR is something that most gamers now have but in reality it's still an almost inconsequential market segment compared to non-VR gaming.

If you only play Elite Dangerous with your VR Gaming PC and VR headset then you're missing out on A LOT of AAA quality VR gaming content:

Half Life Alyx
Skyrim VR (with the Wabbajack VR Essentials Mod Pack)
Fallout 4 VR
No Man's Sky VR
Echo Arena
Lone Echo
SuperHOT VR
Killing Floor Incursion
Wilson's Heart
Lucky's Tale
Stormland
Asgard's Wrath
Arizona Sunshine
Arktika.1
Wilson's Heart
Moss
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
Chronos
Edge Of Nowhere
The Climb
Dead & Buried
Dead & Buried 2
In Death
From Other Suns
Robinson The Journey
LA Noir: The VR Case Files
Mage's Tale
Vader Immortal
Theseus
Technolust
Borderlands 2 VR
Narcosis
Windlands
Windlands 2
Obduction
The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter VR
The Exorcist Legion VR
DiRT Rally
War Thunder
DCS World
Project CARS 2
Assetto Corsa
Alien Isolation VR Mod
Doom 3 BFG VR Mod

And I've probably missed out a few, those are just off the top of my head without going through my Steam and Oculus Store libraries!
If only I had the time ..

I'm gonna go out on a space limb here and say this: I have a strong feeling that if there is no VR in Odyssey, there wont be space legs on ships... as in, we wont be able to walk around our own vessels. I think it would have been too much work.

You will fly around in ships in VR, but if you want to depart, you have to remove your headset and use your screen and you will appear at the bottom of your landing staircase. Just saying.

I hope I'm wrong. Please let me be wrong. Not concerned about VR, just let me walk around my ships and carrier....

There's been a lot of negativity in here.
I get there's a lot of passion around this subject, but it's very easy to go from rational criticism to needlessly putting other people down.

Although of course there's only so much that can be discussed before speculation kicks in due to Frontier's decision to hold important details of future updates close to their chest.

I would be very interested in knowing what percentage of Elite players are consistent VR users.

My only hope is all these people who claim they will quit if theres no VR will move on and not haunt the forum with all the whiny negativity
Don't be a prat. Game sold on a vr only store ..... Now we learn the game won't be supporting the game bought on that store so it's a dead end for those. It's hardly whining. Just like you wouldn't be whining if monitor support was dropped and game became VR only and you only played on a monitor. Features which some people use exclusively being dropped is a big deal for some and they are right to be upset.

And as for you wanting people upset to just leave. The problem is FD have caved multiple times when people make enough of a stink. A double edged sword for sure. Features I liked in principle were changed for the worse imo, OTOH sometimes complaints made the game better for me..... On this I hope my Whining causes change.

The best bet however imo is still that oculus step in and pay for support like in dirt rally 2

I would like to see a bit more clarification on some of the statements for VR use in Odyssey.

I play in VR and for the past three years my Elite: Dangerous stream has been the most watched on Twitch. Since keeping track in a optional survey in 2018, over 320 people have bought over 400 VR headsets because of asking questions about VR and many play Elite: Dangerous because of seeing it on my stream.

Can any portion of Odyssey be played in VR, or is it just the on-foot parts that do not have it?

What is the standard gameplay loop for this? Do we select to switch to on foot, get a notification to take the headset off and then when we decide to get back in the ship, vice-versa and put the headset back on as seamless as we can?

Right now if I switch to flat screen, and then back to VR, it resets my screen res to a 1280x768 VR mirror window every time, will this be changed because it has been a bug fix request since the beginning in 2014, and has yet to be changes, will it be changing back and forth but do it seamlessly between VR and non-VR on foot gameplay and so I dont have to reset my stream window back to full screen each time for my viewers?

Is there a reason for possibly not having it enabled, but with a warning for those that might not be able to deal with VR sickness, but tie the aiming reticule to head-look like the planetary probe launcher used to do in beta 1 of the 3.3 update before that was also removed?

I just want to add to this.

I would understand that VR is dificult to implement for FPS gameplay, it can get a bit too much. But it would be a horrible down grade to completely drop VR support from the game or even just odyssey. Isn't it possible to create a sort of theatre mode in VR so we can use our headset as a flat screen for FPS gameplay, but then when we transition into our ships/srv's we get VR view?

Speaking of the latter, any word if PS4 players will get the Cobra MK4 in Odyssey?

Ahem. Anyways.

I'm pretty confident there won't be anything to announce right now.

Begging no. And never once did i throw a whiny tantrum saying ill quit if i dont get my way.
I'd sell my car to fund the kickstarter for VR for console.
My only hope is all these people who claim they will quit if theres no VR will move on and not haunt the forum with all the whiny negativity

Not for everyone it isnt. Just because some people have it doesnt mean everyone does. I suspect its just the loud minority of players

Hey Tim, thanks for the clarification on VR but I am still desperately trying to justify purchasing the new expansion and would like some clarification. You said that VR still works in Horizons and Base game. Okay, does this mean the content from those games works in VR no matter what, or that I need to launch THAT VERSION of the game to play in VR? In other words, can I:

Fire up the launcher. Launch Elite Dangerous Odyssey and be in my ship IN VR. Can I fly around and scoot around like normal in VR. Can I fly onto an atmosphere planet in VR and enjoy the vistas, and can I get in my SRV as usual in VR and not worry about it... and then just not engage in legs to avoid being booted to my minitor? Will it do what BEAT SABER does when going into the level editor and pop up saying "You must remove your headset to continue" and allow me to go into legs if I really want to without needing to boot the game back up outside of VR or go into the graphics settings?

OR

In order to play in VR, do I need to explicitly launch Elite Dangerous Horizons and lock myself out of all the new features because I am simply unable to launch the Odessey version of the game and use my VR headset, thus restricting me to being unable to enjoy ANY of the new content until some currently unspecified update?

If it's the former, i still intend to purchase the expansion and enjoy what i can with it. If it's the latter, I'll wait.

I said proof of begging. This is just me wishing i had it. Do you understand what begging means?

Begging (also panhandling) is the practice of imploring others to grant a favor, often a gift of money, with little or no expectation of reciprocation

I rather think it will be a binary switch in the launcher, like this:
  • boot Horizons: VR with well, the current game features plus FCS
  • boot Odyssey: Pancake, but all the other exciting, amazing features just round the corner as announced 2 years ago
Hopefully, they'll find a means of keeping the configs separate, but I don't expect it.

I never missed walking around my ship in VR, I could always use the SRV or the external cam if I wanted to have a look. Plus, given the cable is long enough, you could always walk around in the cockpit in VR anyway.

Thinking about it, I never even nauseated zipping around as a bodiless soul, and inside the hangar, the fps even went up actually.

O7,
🙃
